I have been told from the time I started looking at cars I know I had my first at 12 but obviously not on the road and I was working on it, my family told me if i need work done when I go to put they car on the road ask around and find a highly recommended local Guy, you may need a specialist but your local Guy will know one if you need it. Most things I will try to do but I know I have a limit.

@@thecrow7 Me as well... a couple of times. The problem was that i live in a small country with only one Porsche dealer, and i didn't know any people in the know.. A bit of a tip to anyone buying a used Porsche. Get yourself in a "local" Porsche club or group, get to know people that drive them, and they'll point you to a good mechanic. Never go to the dealer out of warranty. Actually Benz service was my best experience at a dealer ever. Who would have thought...

@@janezpungartnik3149 the Audi/Porsche dealer that I go to for various things is actually really good. prefer it to any of the independent shops I've gone to. the guy I deal with has the same year Audi S4 as me, and is very reasonable. They got me extended warranty for something I didn't have all the requirements for, and have even given me discounts on labor. So there are some good ones, but it's definitely not common.

I don’t trust dealer repairs anymore. Took my work van to a Chevy dealer once to get some stuff done. After I drove out of the service parking lot the van wouldn’t shift into 3rd gear. Turned around (drove like 500 feet), went into the office and they told me I have to schedule an appointment and pay $150 up front JUST for diagnostics. Long story short went to private mechanic apparently they disconnected a transmission sensor and acted like they didn’t know anything.

Most of us know the game... A regular Joe walks into a Service Dealer and wants an inspection on an older "new purchase". They see that you never been to their dealership and they want to make a lifelong customer. They give you a "Good Report" and you gladly agree to get your car up-to-date according to dealer specs. They clean it and hand you a PAID invoice with the Luxury dealerships Logo on it.You take your car home and you start noticing the same sounds, creeks etc.You take it back and they tell you that so and so needs to be replaced. You ask them why they didn't catch it the first time and they just give you that sad look .They will help you out on the price because you already spend thousands and they also give you a very nice rental car. They start fixing it again and thats when you get a call that they found a critical issue that must be addressed urgently. They can't help you on the price because the parts are OEM and there is no wiggle room here. You don't mine too much because you will get to keep their expensive rental for "free" for awhile and the dealership, out of the goodness of their heart, will help out with the labor since the car is already on the rack. You take the car home and notice other things, noises etc. This is the game ladies and gents. They play it every single day.

Also consider replacing the infamous IMS (intermediate shaft) bearing if this has not been done. M96 motors are prone to this bearing failing. This car is high mileage, so this should be done if it hasn't been already. Use compressed air to blow out the radiators. If you are going to track the car, consider a deep sump or Accusump to protect the motor. Also, if you are a serious track guy, consider a Motorsports AOS (air-oil separator). I personally use Castrol 5W-40 Edge in my street Porsches with very good luck. Stay away from that "other" oil if possible. Then go have fun and tear it up!

Anyone still wanna complain that the Wizard is overcharging? :D Judging from the look of the place, these guys must be an authorized dealership, right? I wonder what Porsche or Porsche USA would have to say about their work philosophy. Not even being able or willing to hand a customer a professional, typo-free estimate with all sums done should be reason enough for the company to bring out their version of a dunce cap and to force these guys to get their act together.

The problem with Porsche dealer is, that Porsche demands highly skilled mechanics and the dealer are also in a training program, but afterwards the higly skilled mechanics hire elsewere for a better paid job. As Porsche dealer in the US i would charge the mechanics for the traing with a fee and with each year in work they could reduce the trainig bill by 20%. If they leave after the trainig for a other company who would beneift from the trainig, the remaining bill is due. - Like a sports club with top player...

MeesterDash First off...good for you! I tend to fall into that category of fix it yourself, too. Having grown up around car dealerships, and Porsche dealerships in particular, I am well familiar with the issues you and Hoovie describe. It was a big part of the reason why my Dad stopped being a Porsche mechanic in the 70s. So this problem is not new. Second, to give a bit of deference to the mechanics themselves, I think the problem is the dealership pricing scheme for repairs. The flat rate system screws the mechanic who can't let the vehicle go back to the customer with a problem not truly fixed, so he ends up giving away time for free on more complicated jobs. Meanwhile the dealership forces him to grossly overcharge for more routine work. On the whole I think dealerships and the new car dealership system is a dinosaur that will soon be extinct.

Lol - top rant and that dealer won't be letting you in the door again 😂 But good on you 👍 It's actually shocking that they didn't find the engine mounts and suspension faults, that's unforgivable. The airbag diagnosis charge seems reasonable now, given the module isn't communicating (so they might have actually plugged in to check codes and got the same result as the Car Wizard). I'm really surprised they didn't pick up that it's impossible to see out of the rear window because it's gone opaque with sun damage tbh - that's such an obvious thing staring them in the face that they should have noted down in a pre-purchase inspection.

If I had the work done somewhere else, (most likely) I wouldn't have a leg to stand on legally. Those airbags have reportedly been exploding & sending pieces of shrapnel into the vehicle occupants when they go off. I don't trust the new ones any more than I do the ones they are replacing just due to the widespread failures. Other examples are the unintended acceleration in Toyota Camrys, & "failure to go into park" with Jeep Cherokees. It's not that I don't trust the competence of local shops, but when it comes to safety issues. These Corporations will look for ANY WAY to get out of a Litigious Situation. Don't give them that opportunity.

I had a PPI done at a Porsche dealership here in Germany a few years ago. I think the hourly rate was actually cheaper, but still very much on the high end. I am in no way a mechanic so I wanted to have a professional take a look at it. Also the asking price was quite an incestment for me, so I asked to go in the garage to have a look mysself. I knew I would not spot anything that wasn't glaringly obvious, but I also knew I would be angry at myself if I spent that much money and there was something obvious I could have seen. When I came in, the mechanic was just about to lower the car from the stand again as he was just finished. I told him I would like to have a look myself, we went from front to back, he said something like the suspension parts look good and I just took his word for it, other then rattling at some things and probably look stupid I would not have known what to do anyway. He said the car was basicly fine for its age. When we came to the back I noticed quite a bit of oil on one side of the engine. I asked "Where is the oil coming from?" to which he replied "What oil?" One side of the exhaust system was comletely covered in it, I thought the guy was joking. He was not, "Oh I missed that"... I mean finding out where it was actually coming from was probably more work than I paid for, but not noticing it at all, the guy did not even look. There were some other small issues with the car, but mostly I did not trust the dealerships oppinion after that so I did not buy the car. Yes, I wanted to buy a used car from a private guy, and just went to the dealership for an inspection. Since I did not live there it was also clear I would not have any future work done there. But paying over 100€ for about 1 hour work that should not matter, for that price do a good job or do not offer the service in the first place.

I went there to buy my daughter an IS250. After the test drive the salesman mentioned no haggle pricing. I told him I would buy the car, with cash, for one dollar less than what they were asking. He snidely told me he wouldn't take a penny less than asking. I walked out and will never go back.

I've never expected different from any dealership. Top dollar for top level incompetence. I'm not a professional mechanic, but a professional musician and trusting a big dealership is like thinking you're going to go into a Guitar Center and buy something that's not broken. Just the way it is. Always a smaller, more financially sound, competent, knowledgeable and CARING solution out there than the big jerk offs. Thankful I have some great indy's around me, but shops that don't know what OEM stands for, or how to do a google search and read a forum have happily got me into what diy's I can handle. I'm very grateful for that, otherwise may not have grown the balls to do it. Indeed, they failed but Hoovie you WON!!

Thank you for going back to your roots. Here lately my favorite KZbin channels have moved from stuff I can relate to (buying and fixing junk) to bragging (look at my latest super car.) I stopped watching a few because I hated that part of a Birthday party when the bratty kids unwrapped their really cool toys, then let you look and not touch. Keep up the good work and check the seatbelt for that light, the little part you plug the belt. The short stubby one on the side where the French fries go. $100 fix, get a used one on Ebay.

My dealer is awesome so I can't complain. Do I let them over sell me on things here and there, yes. It has paid me back 5x in warranty work instead of the usual Cant't Replicate. A little goodwill goes a long way.

@@hackonefouryou You have that right. Sadly a lot of people treat them poorly. I have always treated them with respect and kindness and had all my service done there. When my transmission went a thousand miles past warranty the service manager called Germany and convinced them to cover it. Saved me $19k. Great people. Recommend them to anyone in the market for a Porsche.

Agreed. I worked at a dealership like this so I've seen this kind of job from the inside. The pressure to turn out jobs in a day means you don't have the slack time to take a technician off other work you ARE getting paid to fix to just diagnose a list for a guy who is going to drive away to his normal garage, give them the diagnostic sheet from us and say "here's what's wrong, fix it for me". That said, Tyler paid for diagnostic, and the technician report should have reflected the time spent on the car. Yes the profit per work hour is terrible, and I understand it'll drag the sold hours for the day down, but when it's someone this well known you would have thought they'd cover thier backs a bit better, despite knowing it's going to hurt thier day/week figures.

If you don’t want to do the inspection and the inspection doesn’t pay: don’t do it. Say no to the customer. Say it’s too busy. By doing a half ass job you’re helping no one.

I used to work for a small used car dealership. When someone really liked a car but was on the fence about its condition, I'd always recommend they get a mechanic's shop they trusted to perform a Buyer's Inspection. It's no different than hiring a Home Inspector to help you identify issues before buying a house. You hire them to find the problems on your behalf.

Bond and Beyond it makes sense when you think back to each others’ backgrounds...Hoovie worked in an auto dealership and has a bone to pick with crappy ones that don’t at least TRY to look like they’re doing their job re: service. Harry was an automotive journalist for a high-end publication (evo) and knows the marketing and drive-testing world inside and out; ergo the differences in styles (I figured you probably knew all that but put it in for those that might not know). Cheers!

I have had good experience with my local BMW dealership. The inspections are very thorough and the estimates are always precise but at the end of the day you are paying a lot for the nice waiting room and the espresso machine. I am amazed that a Porsche dealership does not have the same kind of service analysis and cost/parts breakdown that seems standard with BMW. Because my BMW is old and not worth so much, I have switched to the independent mechanic who does my Corvette. His shop is old and grungy and there is no courtesy shuttle but I take public transit there and back and my bills for the work done are now about half of what they would be from the dealer, primarily due to the much lower hourly rate. Support your local Car Wizard!

A note for the Wizard: When giving quotes on maintenance to Hoovie, you should quote at your standard rates and note that Hoovie gets a break. Don't have to reveal that break, but would be more apples to apples. Also, any new business that has found you from this channel or your own won't think that Hoovie rate is your standard. Hoovie, I understand why you get a different rate and that is just good business, so not making a big deal over it, just a suggestion to keep comparison "real" for the average Joe. I'm sure that the Car Wizard kills their rates with his normal rates too! Great video, and I hope you and your family are well.
