I think the problem is that the first owner can afford to maintain them properly and probably the second owner. After that, because they are cheaper to buy, they go to people who can afford to buy them but not maintain them. I have owned a 1964 Silver Cloud III since 1982. I am the second owner and it is in really good condition. I'm letting it go next year, for a new Bentley Flying Spur, and wonder how long the Cloud will stay in careful hands.

I leased a 2001 Intrepid R/T right out of highschool and still have it today, bought it when the lease was up and has 217k miles today... Giving it to my youngest son this summer when he gets his license. Still runs strong and reliable and has the original engine but did have to get the transmission rebuilt once (was cheap though). Over the years I did the timing belt/water pump once, a couple idler pulleys, an A/C compressor, O2 sensor, exhaust gasket and a couple power window motors... That's it. People talk shit about Chrysler's but most of them (aside from cars with the 2.7L engines) get a bad reputation over the dumbest things that are usually easy or cheap to fix.

Lincolns are well made cars and I shall stick with what works.
@richardautenzio81172 жыл бұрын
You make some very good points about the good features of older luxury cars and the most signifiant point is the comfort and build quality. Because I agree with you on these points, I have always believed that a sports car is a sports car and not a luxury car, and a luxury car is a luxurious car and not a sports car. Many modern cars attempt to be both and only achieve a car that is actually inferior in both respects.

Great video :) Good to see us young people appreciating these old classics from Crewe! But its NOT the same mineral oil braking system. The 79 Rolls-Royce had RR363 (basically brake oil and castor oil) and the Bentley has the Citroen LHM mineral oil, as every car from 1981 with the Silver Spirit and its derivates. The fluids must never be mixed! What is the same are the switches and bezels for the door opener, power lock and power windows.

It doesn't matter what make year or model a car is. If it is cheap it is cheap for a reason. Without full service history and a file full of bills you are walking on thin ice and what you finish up with is a money pit. Always buy the best you can afford of a particular model then you cannot go far wrong. Buying private limits legal safe guards. As for that RR it ill break for parts and give a good return. Just for anyone confused as to why the two cars share certain features like the unleaded fuel only warning behind the fuel cap door and the radio antenna, when they are separate companies, here is the reason. Back when these cars where made, Rolls-Royce owned the Bentley brand, having acquired it in 1931. It was only in the late 90s that when the luxury cards deviision of the Rolls-Royce company was put on sale that RR went to BMW while Bentley went to VW (there is also a now separate Rolls-Royce airplane engine company). There is an interesting fact about the way the sale went down, that led both BMW and VW to be caught in a bind where neither could make the luxury cars they bough the brands to make. You see, back in the late 70’s the original RR/Bentley company went bankrupt, the British government stepped in to bail out the company as they were the manufacturer of military airplane parts. They UK government then sold the factories producing RR’s and Bentleys cars to a private investor, licensing the Rolls-Royce & Bentley names, logos, etc. In 1998 the Rolls-Royce brand was licensed to BMW, but not the factory making RR and Bentley cars, which was sold to VW (who did not have the licensing rights to the Bentley name or logo). This created a weird situation where BMW could make a car and name it a Rolls-Royce or Bentley but not the cars currently forming the line-up for the two brands while VW could make the cars but couldn’t legally call them Roll-Royce or Bentley cars or use the then current model names. Shortly afterwards, MMW and VW made a deal in which BMW would gain full rights to make RR cars while VW would gain rights to use it’s newly acquired Bentley factory to make Bentleys (it didn’t really care about making RR’s) with rights to the Bentley brand name, car model names, logos, etc. They are now formally separate companies once again, as they were pre-1931. Another interesting fact, Rolls-Royce was traditionally said to be the type of luxury cars your chauffeur would drive you around in while Bentley’s are the car you drive yourself around In. This is why the Bentley cars got better engines with more power while the Rolls-Royce’s were built more around the notion of better comfort at slower speeds.

After owning a Rolls Royce Silver Shadow 1974 for 3 years I have to say that the braking system and the suspension system are the real achilles heel of these cars. Incredibly advanced for their age but also complicated and difficult to get right. It was an incredibly unique and rewarding experience owning the car but the repair bills were fairly eye watering for the cost of the car and it was just too big to park anywhere and take anywhere. No regrets though...so many memories and good times, money can't buy that :)
@patricksmith4424 Жыл бұрын
From the shadow line Rolls Royce had under license the citroen hydromatic suspension system. This was seriously advanced for the time and it made the Citroen DS, SM and later models after them the most comfy cars on the road. I am sure Citroen partially designed their cars around the system, so rolls probably just added it to an already rolls designed car, so this could have been where problems arose, although I can't say definitely as I ride a bike! Green balls anyone!

My estranged dad in the UK used to buy these new in the '70s. One every two years. The trade-in value - even to a RR dealer - was abysmal, but it was still better than owing one out of warranty. They were junk, even then.

It doesn't cost much to reaper any car. Just leave it where convenient or roll it down a big hill or off a cliff.

*@Jose Trujillo* One man's trash is another's treasure; one man's dream is another's nightmare... Polo matches?! This is why I cringe at the fortune in real estate & philantrophy those selfish insects waste just on club membership, drinks & lunch alone every year for themselves & their friends... 😋 😋 Conversely speaking, what Tyler would have to spend transforming that Rolls from "bomber" to beauty is loose change. He's spent more on dining out & landscaping his lawn, but too swept away in his '91 Bentley to think about any of this. By the year 2040 when his Bentley is just as worn out, he'll figure: "Why waste the money restoring the car. I'll just buy another one!" ...That's right, Tyler: Save the money, *_waste the car_*

I think this car has been to more cockfights than polo matches. And the fighting cocks may have roosted in the car between matches.

Until the transmission goes out which was quite common for them. Inlaws had a 94 ES 3.5 and the transmission and air compressor went out before it even hit 40k miles

@@richardbutton1179 I saw one towed in only about a year old, it lost all it's coolant or oil, somethin. It burned up the oil and locked up. With the exception of Ford Tempos, the Fords were the best cars coming in the garage, oil change, maybe a tie rod, that was it. GM's were leaking everything, missing wheels studs, one threw a rod on a cold start. Chryslers k-cars were, mystery electrical gremlins, loose rear wheel bearings, fuel pumps. With the cab forward cars (LH,) they upped their game to shitting engines and transmissions, still had the other issues too.

I own three. I have seen numerous neglected Royces. Now that many are becoming old, if not properly maintained (and MANY are not) given that the parts are VERY expensive a 'restoration' can cost more than the market value

If you have time and ability and physical fitness, one can work through all these issues. Mostly people are too busy earning a living to self service and maintain such a car.

That squealing / howling noise mad by the air conditioning sounds like a fan bearing that is wearing out and the axle is vibrating loosely in the bearing, sometimes does it more when there is moisture in the bearing. Solution is to get a drop of relatively thick oil in each bearing.
