The problem is that they depreciate to the point where more people can afford to buy them but not maintain them properly. The first owner can, usually the second. Then service is skimped and it goes downhill. I am the second owner of a 1965 Rolls Royce Silver Cloud III, and have been since 1982. It's properly maintained and driven most days.

1990 Turbo R owner here. Glad to see our cars getting some attention from Hoovie! I suspect that the Wizard and Hoovie are being a bit dramatic here with the final scene. I suspect they both know this, but the windows probably just need the little $5 plastic coupling and some grease, maybe 1 hour labour each max, which the Wizard alluded to when looking at it. Also the distribution valves are supposed to leak a bit, so seeing green fluid when you take off the 'rat trap' is expected. They would need to be replaced if they are leaking excessively. The brake pumps might just need O-rings but it's not bad to replace them with rebuilt ones. I'd just fix the brake pump leaks and then see how the distribution valves are doing. But ya, that steering rack DEFINITELY needs to go. Overall. they are beautiful cars, I just love mine.

I owned a 1994 Bentley Turbo RL whose previous owner was Larry Flynt. I bought it in 2004with 45,000 miles. It had been serviced since new by the estimable Vantage Motor Works in Miami. It was magnificent to look at and drove very well. Initially, I loved it, however it didn’t love me! It plagued me with issues. It constantly overheated, for example. I put in a OEM radiator and even that did not solve the cooling problems. Once, parked in front of The Breaker’s waiting for valet it refused to come out of Park and had to be towed. Ignominious! The rear suspension was next to need repair. Brake rotors in front warped. Check engine light was constantly going on for seemingly no reason. Finally, the differential grenaded one day whilst turning around in a parking lot! Many of these constant incessant problems were fixed under a warranty by Vantage, but I was still out of pocket around $10k after 2 years of ownership! Amusingly enough I could never get a speeding ticket in that car even though I normally drove it 85 mph. I was stopped 8 times in 3 years and every time was able to talk my way out of a ticket. I’ve owned many exotic cars in my long life and none of them affected police in such a favorable way! After the differential broke I decided to sell it. I entered it in a Miami Kruse auction. The venue was the American Airlines Convention Center and as amazing good luck would have it there was an annual XXX video convention next door. When those pornographers learned that Larry Flynt’s car was being sold next door, they stampeded over to bid on it! I sold it for more than I’d paid for it.

Better to pay an experienced mechanic to inspect it. Can be as trivial as a fuse. You can fix it cheap and can always sell it when bored driving it. I mean if you get after fixing for 3000$, it won't attract much loss when selling. Though it'll always be an unreliable BMW.

On your Window motors, on every single 30K series SZ car I have owned/fixed (except one) I have found that faulty windows are not failed motors, but the little rubber-like coupler that connects the motor to the gears. they often swell and fail. Those cost only about $2.50 each. Also, there is a coupler like that on the shift actuator as well, so if your shift ever fails, it is most likely that. Enjoy that beast!

Hoovie, WELCOME TO MY WORLD! ('98 Silver Spur) Actually, every one of those cited repairs are COMMON amongst the SZ-series cars, except the distribution valves. Amongst the Rolls-Royce/Bentley crowd there is an expression: "If it doesn't leak, IT'S EMPTY!" That pan he removed to inspect the brake/suspension distribution circuits is actually a drip-pan that collects the excess/over-pressurized HSMO fluid. As a part of routine maintenance, that pan is removed and cleaned. That said, many mechanics add an absorbent towel/diaper into the pan to secure overflow fluid from leaking out of that collection pan and replace the towel/diaper when servicing the car. Though his prices may seems shockingly high, they are actually a bargain when you incorporate rebuilt parts over new (which would cost triple). His labor rate seems surprisingly reasonable for each repair...let's hope he holds to his flat-rate labor quote. As for taking a loss...well, yes and no. The documented service history on the car is key to its value. Any knowledgeable Rolls-Royce/Bentley buyer will want to see a well-provenanced (documented) service history for the car. Keep your accumulated receipts in that binder with the existing receipts....that in and of itself increases the market value of the car substantially to a knowledgeable buyer. There is an old adage amongst the 'manor-born': "There's nothing more expensive than a cheap Rolls-Royce (or Bentley)." I am sure you've figured that out by now?

This car is a headache BUT they are fabulous cars to drive, very little matches the BTR for drive and comfort and the road presence alone is amazing, the admiring looks these cars get when filling up with petrol and even just parked is a pleasure of owning one. Unfortunately as we see here there are downsides, but once behind the wheel all is forgiven, well, until the next expensive problem! Thanks for this guys, and keep up the great work!

I have no idea how Johnny manages to do an engine strip and yet maintain such cleanliness and order. His garage looks like the car was delivered shrink-wrapped as is, kudos to him. Saying that, my mechanic, Gus, who I have been using for over 20 years is much more like 'The Wizard' and I have to say that I will never change. I love how properly trained and experienced mechanics can feel and smell how a car is without having to use a laptop. To me the human hands-on approach is true engineering.

The guys over on "Car Throttle" in the UK picked up a Bentley of similar vintage for £5000 (not far off the Wizard's repair bill) and Wheeler Dealers bought a 1983 Mulsanne Turbo for £3250 which was cosmetically challenged (peeling lacquer and tired leather upholstery) but had no rust, no leaks and was mechanically 100%. Both cars had a current MoT (UK annual roadworthiness test similar to state inspections) so they could be driven on the public roads. The only thing that's seriously wrong with Tyler's Bentley is that the steering wheel is on the wrong side!

You still got the better deal I think. It sounds like some other expensive issues were already sorted out by the previous owner and once the current problems are fixed, I bet it's far more reliable than that Mercedes ever will be and even leaking oil it's far classier. I actually wouldn't mind getting a Bentley from this time period though I might go for a non-turbo version just to avoid the potential repairs those can involve. My understanding is a decent one can be had for around $15,000. The big question is now that you have this and that BMW 760, will you be selling off the purple Rolls Royce? The Bentley is every bit as nice inside, more fun to drive, and probably will be more reliable. The 760 will take care of your need for a BMW money pit (which the Rolls basically is as well).
