Great video! I got me the same MattBox at the begin of the year. Makes it look more professional. I was shooting my friend off-roading with it. Love how light is it to move around. Love taking the Gh5 everywhere! So compact and light to carry around. My Next purchase is gonna be another lens for sure.

That is a nice setup. I recently put together a Rig for my GH4 using used parts I bought from Offer up. I seen the Matte Box and Follow focus on Film Riot and have it on my wish list. I first have to get a cage as the original one I had wouldn't allow me to use my Speedbooster.
@CalebHoover3 жыл бұрын
nice! the matte box and follow focus are not super necessary but can be helpful in some situations
@EugeneMaynard3 жыл бұрын
The matt box also allows you to tilt your filter to avoid reflections at certain angles by slotting one side it the slot 1 guide and the other side in slot 2 (or vice versa). I have refined a similar Smallrig setup over a couple of years to such a level where everything is truly modular and so well balanced I can use one finger to lift it without it falling in any direction no matter what accessories I have connected to it. Smallrig is our way to still have fun getting away with playing with something like LEGO! Your rig is a good starting point! 😂👍🏾🙏🏾
@CalebHoover3 жыл бұрын
😂 totally is like LEGO! love it! I'm excited to keep building off this.

For Panasonic lenses that Lightweight box is too big, better would be Mini box. When add camera to tripod I move monitor at the back of the handle then I can add mic at the front of the handle. Still have not try SmallRig V-mount battery adapters .. but it's someting that interest.
@CalebHoover3 жыл бұрын
i totally agree for smaller lenses the mini might be the right way to go. i usually only rig out the sigma 18-35 which is fine with the normal matte box and one thing i forgot to mention in the video is the 18-35 internal zoom which is one of the reasons i keep that on a rig. thanks for watching!

I really like your videos. I have built a Smallrig cage for my GH5 in the last couple of weeks and I need to tell you to go check out the SmallRig Rotating NATO Handle 3260. I have the mini follow focus just like you and the rotating handle is great because you can put it in any position you like. So when using the follow focus I point it forward and get a great handle to hold under at the same time I can adjust the follow focus. A really good option...
@CalebHoover3 жыл бұрын
sounds like a great option on rotating that! one thing i might add to this would be a side handle.
@PsyckadeliOfficial3 жыл бұрын
@@CalebHoover Yes I think you will like it. I added a strap on the left side. I first had it on the right hand side but you move your hand so much around the camera with the right hand so the straps was great on the extra handle on the left hand instead...

LOVE this rig!!! Can you still use a VND with that matte box or just ND plates?
@CalebHoover3 жыл бұрын
you'd be able to thread it into a one stop ND on the front of the lens but would not be able to use a VND. Wouldn't be able to adjust between stops. i think the ideal option would be 4x4 ND plates.
@kpopRC2 жыл бұрын
damn that hdmi cable hanging out the side of the camera makes me nervous.
@daveharrison924810 ай бұрын
Hi Caleb. Have you come across a solution that allows you to have the benefit of the mattbox while keeping magnetic clip on VND or ND filters. All my lens are set-up/converted to 82mm and all have magnetic rings allowing me to clip on VND and ND filters but I'd like the benefits of a mattebox in terms of protecting from light. Spo far all options I have looked at preclude the use of the magnetic rings

I have the same baseplate with rods to connect to my cage. Only issue is it takes a while to remove the plate if I just want to use the camera without the rod system. Have you ever tried putting another QR plate on top of the baseplate? Also might make it easier for breaking it down for transport too. Do you transport it with the baseplate on as well?

Should I go back to something like a GH5ii from my S5? I do miss the ease of use and perfect stabilization but I do distinctly remember the non-linear focus being a problem. (GH5ii only allows some high end lenses apparently to be linear while S5 allows all L mount lenses) I really do miss that stabilization so if that non-linear problem and the low light can be worked around, I might go back to MFT
