While driving an older truck might save you money on a car payment, it may cost you more when it comes to repairs and parts. If a broken part leaves you stranded, or worse, damages other parts on its way out, that's when you have to start shelling out the big bucks.
The 5.4-liter 3-valve Ford is a great example of this. They were introduced in 2004 and replaced the 2-valve. Some of the main differences are in the cylinder head. There are 3 lobes for each cylinder on the camshaft. Two for the intake valves and one for the exhaust. There's also the addition of variable valve timing. While that's great for torque, it actually gave the engine an Achilles heal.
Symptoms of failing phasers are loss of fuel mileage, a ticking noise, and loss of power. A lot of people miss or ignore that though and keep driving which results in complete failure and lack of lubrication to the top of the engine.
But rather than scrapping or trading in your old pickup, PowerTrain Products has a better solution for you. They offer re-manufactured and updated 543 valves for just under $3,300. They also offer re-manufactured engines, transmissions, transfer cases and differentials for a wide range of vehicles. They have a great warranty and you can even step up to the no-fault warranty that will cover you for 5 years and unlimited miles regardless of the cause of failure.

Best thing anyone can do for their 5.4 3v is run 5w-30 oil instead of 5w-20 like recommended. It truly was designed for 5w-30 and there are forums with real experiences to back up that claim. The cam phasers will go much longer and oil pressure will improve.
@scottlambeth5478
@scottlambeth5478 4 жыл бұрын
The thing is Ford specs 5w20 for their engines for fuel mileage reasons. It's no secret the motors live longer with 5w30 but to meet the mileage standards set by the EPA they have to cheat slightly and use that watery 5w20 BS oil. That's why from day one of owning my 02 5.4 i've used 5w30 instead of the 5w20 the owners manual called for, plus back when I bought my truck new in 2002 the 5w20 oil wasn't as widely available as it is now.

Dude, I work at an independent shop, a really bad one, where my boss and coworkers will pour ANYTHING in your engine, they will mix 5w20 and 5w30 oils together instead of walking to go grab another quart, or just dump in whatever is laying close by with no regard to what it actually calls for. ...it kills me. ..smh And we don't diagnose either, and by we I really mean THEY. ...just swap part after part until it either gets fixed or give up and send it to "the dealer" lmao My boss, the owner of the garage, watches youtube videos and uses Google to "diagnose" things. ...I'm not kidding one bit. ..he's too cheap to buy a subscription to all data or shop key, or Mitchell on demand, or identifix etc etc ....we have no information, no diagrams, there's only two of us mechanics in the garage, and we use the shops tools, which SUCK for the most part, old wore out sockets and screwdrivers, we don't even have a working multi meter in the shop, just a test light, and an old ass snap on solus scanner. We don't have a fuel pressure test guage worth a damn, just an ancient leaky one with only one fitting for gm.....I would bring my tools but the guy I work with is a slob and I don't want him touching my shit, it'll get lost or broke if he does, I have to go around behind him organizing and cleaning just so I know where to find tools and don't have to work in a huge mess constantly. ..I bet if I missed a couple days in a row the place would look like a grease tornadoe came through the shop. ...I've only been there two months ...when I first started it was bad. ...would take me five or ten minutes just to find a particular socket or extension that I needed Because everything was just thrown around everywhere with no rhyme or reason, I have ocd, honestly, I have to have a clean organized work space or I lose my shit. ... The owner of the shop is cheap, pays as little as he possibly can, and wonders why he can't keep employees, he keeps the paper towels and toilet paper under lock and key because he's afraid customers are going to steal it. ...seriously. .... And will let one of the two racks sit empty all day while there's $500-$1000 labor jobs sitting in the pkng lot to be done in fear of missing out on a $20 oil change that may or may not show up. ... And get aggravated when I find other things wrong with vehicles other than what they are in for. ...he thinks I'm trying to rack up the bill on the customer, when in reality I'm just doing a good job and letting them know their brakes are almost metal to metal and it can be dangerous, you'd think it would be a win /win. ..we make money and customer stays safe, but no. ....I dint understand his logic, he turns down work left and right that actually needs done. That's money rolling right out the door with the vehicle in my mind. Sorry for this rant whoever reads this, I just gotta get all this off my chest or in gonna explode, and since I really need this job right now to get myself out of the bad jam I'm in I can't say anything to anyone out loud. Boss doesn't pay overtime either, it's the same rate matter if you work over or not, and get this, if I work a Saturday he only gives us $50 cash each. ..and he thinks we're supposed to be happy about that! !!! Plus I show up early every single day and give him 4 to 5 free hours of labor every week...never have gotten a thank you or anything, my probationary period raise was three weeks late showing up on my paycheck. ...and it was only half of what I need in order to be able to pay my bills and eat without juggling bills. After I get these last couple ase certifications and have my master tech patch, I'm moving to Florida and I'm gonna apply to a Honda dealership and make some REAL money, working on the easiest repairable cars out there, brand new, no rust. ...life will be so much easier. ....can't wait! !!!

The phasers and tensioners aren't the problem, it's the oil pump! The factory pump loses pressure at moderate rpms, reducing lubrication at the top end. The passenger side is the last to be lubricated, that's why the passenger phaser is usually the first to go. Both the phasers and tensioners run off oil pressure. I'm glad to see someone offering a reman with the most up to date parts.
@hochhaul
@hochhaul 5 жыл бұрын
Exactly. Ford even had to lower their spec for the hot idle oil pressure after the 3V went into production because so many oil pumps fell below the original hot idle oil pressure. Plus, the 3V had fairly narrow oil passages in the heads that tended to restrict flow and cause the heads to be sensitive to any slight loss in oil pressure (hence the cam journal and phaser wear). The engine simply has too many other potential issues that result in not enough oil being fed to the phasers (and the heads generally speaking).
@Professionalpatternrecognizer
@Professionalpatternrecognizer 5 жыл бұрын
That new high volume Melling oil pump is a godsend. Never seen the VCT system on my 5.4 3v so stable. The OEM pumps use an aluminum backing plate which deflects under load which is why they lose pressure and volume as the RPM rises. The new Melling pump has a cast iron backing plate to remedy that issue.
@hochhaul
@hochhaul 5 жыл бұрын
@@Professionalpatternrecognizer They can also develop oil pressure issues due to cam journal wear. If the oil isn't changed often enough, sludge deposits can form in the oil channels, causing restrictions in oil flow feeding the cam phasers. It's the downside of more complex OHC engines. The complicated components that require oil flow to function correctly are competing with all the cams and lash adjusters. If the pump can't meet all the oil demand at the top of the block, or if somebody pushes oil changes too often, you either get wear which reduces oil pressure and creates oil flow losses.... or the engine develops deposits that restrict flow and starve the top end of oil, which creates accelerated wear and excessively high oil pressure drop in the heads, which leads to wear and cam phaser issues.

Listen. Please take this to heart. If Ford does anything right, it's trucks and 8 cylinder engines. Mod motors are no exception. The vague bologna that is perpetuated with the 3 valves is played out. "They spit plugs, the old plug design was terrible, the phasers explode, phasers are a terrible thing," on and on. I will relate my story with my 3V. Bought an 05 Expedition with 182K on it. Needed it for all the kids. Wanted a truck. The expedition fit the bill. I bought an Eddie Bauer, so it's a LOAD of weight. like 5600 curb weight or something like that. It's a 4 wheel drive. Limited slip rear dif. Actually a pretty nice set up. Good shape. paid 4500 cash and owned it the day I bought it. The torque converter lockup was slipping when I bought it so I swapped it out with a new torque converter and a much better built transmission (had monster out of Florida rebuild it, they do performance racing transmissions, and it cost just a little over the typical cost of a stock rebuild). Back to the engine part of this story. The engine had that diesel rattle at idle, the original phasers were shot. I was unaware about the oil pump issues these things experience, so I just replaced the camshaft phasers with an upgraded set of Dorman phasers. I will say that I have never had an issue with these phasers and I get no codes, they work just fine. Anyway, drove the truck for approx another 40K just doing that. I always added one container of lucas to it when doing an oil change. Stuff does a great job of sticky lubrication and helping to protect parts. Never had an issue over 40K miles doing this either. Recently I had read some things about the oil pressure issues and these trucks, so I figured I'd better get the melling unit installed. Pulled everything apart and swapped it out. also found a mildly blown head gasket on the drivers side, so I pulled the drivers head. Figured since it was off anyway, took it to my head guy and had him redo the entire thing. When I got it back from him, he said "yeah, it was due for a complete rebuild, but honestly for 220+K, not bad at all." That means something. The heads are solid units. While I had the head off, I figured I'd take some measurements. The piston tops were covered with a lot of carbon buildup. a wire brush in a drill fixed all of that. barely scratched the pistons at all. The pistons are good quality. I measured diameter of the thrust surfaces of the cylinders against the lateral surfaces of the cylinder. Mind you, my engine has 220+K miles at this point. There was just under 0.003" difference between the thrust and lateral faces. That's with this mileage in a 5600+lb expedition. and I have no idea how well or not well the prior owner treated this thing. I have zero piston rattle, no weird mechanical noises. decided to check all of the valvetrain components while I have the head off from the drivers side. all the lifters were within 0.010 of one another. cam in great shape and lobes were almost perfect in respect to one another and wear. My truck makes great torque and gets after it. I love the cam phaser system, makes for a great performing engine. I will continue, even with the melling pump, to put one half container of the lucas and then synthetic oil in it. The engine needs 2 quarts put in it every 4000 miles or so (obviously has some small leaks, it's got over 220K on it). I put on some street fire coil-on-plugs and it definitely made a difference. E3 spark plugs. I fully expect this engine to live and perform in this truck to at least the 350K mark before a rebuild is necessary (maybe more). I'd take it anywhere and have no concerns about confidence in it. Lets just end this bullsh*t about the 3 valves. This conversation is SO played out. Do they have some common minor issues, sure. If you are buying one at this point, the plug issue has already been addressed. You likely need to swap out the oil pump, which takes a day or two. If you have a little mechanical ability, not hard to tackle at all. They are brutally reliable. And if you truly care for them, don't drive them crazy, keep good oil in them, and do basic maintenance, like any engine, they will live a long life. These engines aren't a bad mark on the 5.4 history or evolution, they are just as good as all the others.

LOL. Sold my last modular ' 97 F150 with 350,000 miles on it. Great other than using 1qt of oil/1000 miles. My '04 FX4 5.4 3V needed an engine replacement at 120,000 miles due to head damage caused by oil pressure issues. It's a clean well maintained truck. I work with 4-5 guys who traded their 3V trucks in. None of them had failures, but the noise made them feel like failure coming soon. I understand that some run a long time while making noise, but my checking account had a $6000 hit due to this over complicated under performing engine. And ALWAYS put in an oil pump if you're pulling these engines down that far. Also, the earlier cast iron timing chain tensioners are a good addition.

The actual highest failure point in the 5.4l 3V is the timing chain tensioners. The orginal plastic ones have a 'printed on' gasket that blows out and causes low oil pressure and slack in the timing chains. These 2 problems then domino onto other components. With slack in the chains, now the chains slap around and the phasers also hammer as they rotate on the cam lobes which causes them to smak back and forth, this coupled with low oil pressure damages the phasers, the camshaft and journels and the timing chain guides. The stock oil pumps are another point of weakness with a melling M340HV being the upgrade all these engines need. O yes and lets not forget about the roller followers which like to seize, and the spark plugs that like to break off in the heads. Great job ford, you are just like microsoft, creating garbage for the masses.

I do quite a bit of 5.4 work and about half of what this cat said was true. I have many of them out there with over 300K on them and have seen some with over 500K . At the moment I have one torn down in the garage outside that has 90K on it and its junk from top to bottom. So whats the secret ? There is no secret , change the oil in the damn things and when it starts making noises fix it. That shouldnt take a rocket scientist to understand. I hear this constantly about how these motors were no good blah blah blah. The engines are awesome , people are just morons. So they dodge the bullet of having to spend the money on small repairs. Then they have a paper weight in the driveway that needs 5K sunk into it to make it run again. BRILLIANT !! If you do quality phasers and timing components (Better than stock) and upgrade that oil pump about when those stock phasers start making noise you are good for a very long time.

I did a complete timing/rockers/melling hi-vol/pressure replacement at 150k. It rips especially above 4k rpm but seems to lack power and uneven torque curve low-mid. I was thinking about doing a solid phaser lockout kit w/tune cause I read that the phasers are oil pressure sensitive and the new oil pump while providing lots of lube might be affecting the power curve. Is this really true? I haven’t heard any real cases of the phaser itself failing. It’s usually a cascade failure caused by the seals on the tensioner going, which accelerates the wear on the chain guides and ultimately clogs the oil pickup with bits of plastic, burning up the top end. The consensus is to do a timing job early and replace everything with the updated parts and high volume oil pump.

Really there' a better solution to the cam phaser failure in the 3 valve mod motors. Install a phaser lockout kit. This does come with a downside and it slightly reduces the powerband, but in the long run it's barley noticeable, it prolongs the life of the engine, and it removes the most common failure point of these engines.

The problem is the factory oil pump is weak. Replace that with a high volume pump and that corrects 90% of the problems.
@muskokamike127
@muskokamike127 5 жыл бұрын
@@kingdaniel3519 Yes, they do need to be replaced but the thing is: you have to tear most of the engine down to get to it. Then you're into the "might as well do the timing chain, phasers , guides etc" while you've gone that far and then you're into the price of another engine. A new high volume oil pump solves some of the problems, not 90%. The number 1 issue that an oil pump won't solve is the singular oil passage that goes through the left bank, then through the crank, then the right bank ending up at the right phaser. Which is why that side fails first in 99% of the cases. It's the last to receive oil and by then, it's picked up all kinds of contaminants. The kicker with the 5.4L is the whole system is designed around oil pressure and Ford put in a shitty oil pump for the first 3 years and 2.5 million engines.

Sorry for not seeing this earlier! Absolutely you can. Even a set of ported PI heads wakes up the 5.4. And the 3V wakes up nicely at 8psi of boost. Watch those stock rods closely when getting above 500 wheel horsepower. A good set of rods will let you get 750-800 without issue. It’s a great platform with a few mods.

I try not to go past 4,400 miles Between Oil Changes with a Maximum of 4,800 miles between oil changes. He also gives a link showing you what to buy. Back to $3,300 without labor and it may happen again, I wonder what it would cost to convert it to a 6.2 and use a Raptor wiring harness. Then you'd have something! My 5.4 has 102k on it. Right after I got it I found out they are crap so I have babied mine along since 2006. If I ever do buy a new truck it may be a 92 - 96 F 250 regular cab with an injected 460 and 4:10.1 gears that I restore. I bet I could do it for $20k if I found a decent one. @@commanderstud2417 Daniel Hinkle but the single oil passage is THE number on flaw that causes all the issues with the 5.4 and I can guarantee you: no rebuilder is addressing that. Yes, they use updated and improved parts, but that's like putting lipstick on a pig: at the end of the day, it's still a pig. Are they still using plastic guides? yes. FAIL. What should happen is they cast them out of aluminum (the molding process isn't that more costly or time consuming) and the issue of broken guides is taken care of permanently. Melling guides are (arguably) the best, and they cost $22.00 each x 4 = $88.00. To have my engine last 300,000 miles trouble free, I'd pay $100 each easy. Does anyone make them? nope. VCT solenoids, $100 each and they regularly fail due to piss poor design. I'd pay double that $200 to have my engine last 300,000 miles trouble free. The list goes on. If you're going to charge me $1000 for shitty parts, and it costs me $3000 to put them in (at the dealer) then I'm willing to pay 100% more to have something that I won't ever have to do again. Someone was arguing with me the other day about how "new" engines last so much longer than the old cast iron block engines. I called bullshit even when the cited some study. You see, I don't consider an engine "lasting longer" if you have to put $5000 into it every 100,000 miles (Or where I live, 100,000 kms).

The 5.4L 2v Triton engines would spit out spark plugs, the 5.4L 3V Triton engines would keep them in no matter what, and chew up that stupid VCT system. One of the main issues iwth the VCT system as I understand it, and I could be wrong, is insufficient oil flow / pressure. The updating Melling pumps fix this problem, mostly.... I have an '04 waiting to be repowered, and honestly, if I could get it through smog, I would build a 351c with modern EFI instead of this 5.4 junk. I have no plans on blowing 50K on a new truck. That's just a waste of money. I'll have to keep plugging away at this older rig, and should it need to go to the scrap pile, I will just find another old rig to keep going with...

The npi 5.4 has no plug spitting problem and can be used with the pi cam and truck intake manifold to make identical power with likely more torque. Early navigators used the Npi 5.4 2v. You could also just pull a late 05+ 4.6 2v cylinder head which have fixed the thread problem as well.

My 10 navigator I will put HV oil pump , new chain , updated design tensioners , guides, updated vct valves etc etc. Key is oil changes and if you don't have money , use marvel mystery oil to help boost oil flow volume, use good filter, check oil , once it's dirty dark or close to 5k ,change it. I'll admit the engineers where taking crazy pills but they design the motor around oil flow,psi, volume etc, they didn't care about general public of not having enough money or slacking on oil changes..poor pm car care etc human habits. Run it till it's dead mentality. Also don't use marvel mystery oil in the fuel for newer cars I'd say 06+ 02 sensors will die!!! Lol
