I made my comment to correct the record and disabuse him of the notion that Franklin was a Christian. The one thing I've learned over the years is that yes you can use aftermarket parts in locations that are easy to deal with. An example would be a lock actuator or something of that nature. When it comes to a time-consuming job such as parts behind the timing cover, it's best to use Factory parts. It just saves you a lot of grief.

Love your videos. I've owned 2 expys. A 98 and my current 04. I specifically bought an 04 because it was the last year that the expedition used the old (RELIABLE) 2V 5.4. My 98 had 255k on it when i sold it almost 4 years ago. I saw the guy driving it a month or 2 ago. It has over 350k. Original engine, nothing other than an alternator and regular maintenance items, i.e brakes, COPs,Plugs etc. Wheel bearings are still all good! Now my 04 only has 155k. It has rust on the rocker panels already. The power moonroof broke the plastic clip part. Other than that it's perfect. Oh, and the wheel bearings in the rear needed replacement when i bought it...........I suggest, if you're looking for a expy, go 98-02 if possible. DO NOT BUY 05 unless you want to do what this video entails! It is inevitable in the early 3v engines. Why didn't ford go like GM and just make a nice, simple pushrod engine and stick with it? That's another story

@johnr84766 жыл бұрын
Are you saying the Ford parts are just a little better than the aftermarket?
@FloorItDuh6 жыл бұрын
Here's the funny thing about aftermarket parts. You get what you pay for. If you cheap out you are going to end up just paying more. There are plenty of manufacturers that engineer their products, test them thoroughly, and stand behind them. For instance FordTech here recommends installing a melling high volume oil pump instead of replacing it with a Ford OEM one. Why? Because it's well built and addresses the issue of low oil pressure. Obviously because of scale of economics, government regulations, etc, OEM's are somewhat limited on what they can do due to either longevity reasons, maintenance reasons, final cost reasons, and a whole host of others I'm not going to touch on here. If I'm building 1000 HP 5.4 you are on crack if you think OEM parts are going to suite my needs. It's all about what you are doing which is why you can't just throw stuff in and expect it to work. You have to know what you are doing and if you don't either learn and accept the risk that you take any time you do modifications or leave it to someone who know's what they are doing.

That's precisely how I feel about parts stores too. And half the time it seems you can't get the correct kind of fluids from the parts stores - instead they offer some sort of "one size fits all" solution. ATF is a good example of this. About the only time I'll run an aftermarket part is if I'm in a bind and need to get a vehicle going right away AND the part isn't too hard to replace in the event the aftermarket part fails. I won't use aftermarket parts on customer rigs - it has bitten me in the butt more than I ever care to admit.

@@Trinergy-Livewire Yeah... my 4.6L has been down for 8 days now while I was diagnosing a vct issue. I replaced the solenoids and put the covers back on, but the ford phasers are still getting stuck on advanced timing at idle. I think one of the two has been on the vehicle since it was made in 2007 (its a 2008 Mustang GT) so it is just old. I bought aftermarket phasers but after watching these videos, I'm not even going to bother putting them in the car. Gonna buy new ford ones in a few days once I have some money lmao, they aren't cheap. To be fair, the 4.6L is a beautifully driving engine, I have it tuned for 93 octane gas. But when theres a problem, you can be down for days repairing it. I had to do two clutch jobs since I owned the car (2014), one from the puny ford stock clutch disc burning out (which I replaced with a beefier exedy clutch), and again for the slave cylinder/throw out bearing coming apart. When I took it out of the transmission, it literally fell apart in my hands lol.

It depends, quality aftermarket performance parts don't have the same penny pinching cost mentality as a lot of OEM parts, in fact, I would go so far as to say a lot of ford parts that were in my 2008 Mustang GT like the plastic clutch line, plastic clutch pedal linkage, super restrictive intake tube, and a lot of flimsy suspension components were junk. I pretty much replaced everything with aftermarket. However, when it comes to critical and specialty engine components, like the phasers for example, no one is going to be able to replicate those parts better than Ford.

I don't know Brian, I have bought both the OEM and the CNC's from Freedom Racing and have not had them come back. I have done quite a bit of these. I have good relations with many customers ( some of them like to come by and chat all the time) they would have let me know if any issues. Maybe I have just been blessed with quality ones. I also use the Ford Racing High Flow oil pump with pickup tube, it's priced reasonably as well. I am not bias I am just sharing my experience with Freedom Racing and what I've bought. Thanks

I can sure appreciate your honesty and definitely your passion. Nothing could be more frustrating than having to pay for some aftermarket junk (not to mention the labor) to have it installed, only to have to pay to have the job done correctly using quality OE parts! I had to learn my lesson the hard way when replacing a flywheel on my 5.0 Windsor. Had a Luk flywheel installed only to find out my engine was running "out of balance" Vibrated really bad! Next up was a cheap Chinese POS that was packaged as a Sachs. Even more issues!! Finally went to a salvage yard to get a OE one. (No longer available from Ford) Had it machined and installed...!!Runs perfect!! after transmission was pulled 3TIMES!
@everytoolashammer94276 жыл бұрын
It's not just these engines components. I've bought countless after market (dorman) phasers that didn't work or were not even machined with enough clearance to even bolt on or rotate. Where there is a penny to be made there is a scam.

So your feelings on aftermarket phasers are quite clear, and seem to be justified. But i've been wondering something. As a tech that does so many timing jobs what's your opinion on a phaser lockout kit like the one Livernois Motorsports sells? I know it requires a custom tune on the PCM but the whole idea of fully locking out the phasers is just removing the possibility of failure down the road. By all accounts is a lockout kit is used then it shouldn't matter what brand of phasers are installed simply because they won't be able to move after the kit installation.
@FordTechMakuloco6 жыл бұрын
I never use lock outs, I will have a video on why soon. Also even with them locked out there could be internal failures inside the phaser and even the three pins on the front shearing.

Brother, I totally agree with you 100%. I have changed so many bs phasers, not to mention all the other aftermarket suspension parts. I did one of those with advance parts that had the same problem about the same time this video came out lol. parts came from advance auto parts and we ended up putting the originals back in and installing a lockout kit. seemed to work and the customer didn't want to pay for oem parts. it is good to know that there are parts that work and keep the original functionality of the vehicle intact.

I have been getting stuff from NAPA for years now, never have problems. I won't buy anything critical from AutoZone, OReilleys, etc. Last year had a lapse in judgment, bought a trans mount for the wife's van from OReilleys because they had it in stock. Lasted a year and the rubber tore. Learned to stuff heater hose in there and fixed it. But lesson learned the hard way...again.

Great video. I'm sick to have read of so many dealerships replacing engines due to timing components. I've got a 2005 Expedition now at 284,000 miles. I've only had to replace the VCTs...3 x now and did the phaser sensors (not the actual phasers) just because they were easy. I most always have used full synthetic and my internals still look new! Only view is from VCT hole but looks like new. Don't scrimp on oil and replace those VCT's the moment the code pops up! The reason is that you must MUST maintain oil flow on upper engine and those VCT's have fine screens and do go bad. I buy from Silver State Ford in NV. Wholesale OEM to the public. Great service and quick enough shipping.

I was the Dyno tech at Cloyes Gear and I don’t trust many timing components , we make OE parts for FORD &GM just to Name a few, our hi perf sets were amazing from the HEX A JUST, QUICK ADJUST & Gear drive sets, the chain is something you must be careful when choosing, IWIS, CLOYES RENOLDS & Borg Warner is all I trust, Gates belts period, see every link will stretch and the longer the chain them more links the more cam timing problems, people have no idea how much power they lose over chain stretch and it is a little bit at a time so a timing set replacement will blow the customers mind if they don’t understand. Cloyes has sold out a couple times in the last 15 years or so and AAM and Cloyes we’re together but this year they split and AAM is where I now work and Cloyes is starting over with a small crew, we do more OEM @ AAM now but Cloyes will be the big boy soon I believe and they still do their hi perf old school and I trust their quality
