Great visuals on this Mike. Amazing, as recently as 20 years ago there were trucks in and out of this mill after they left Arkwright. It will all be scraped clean again for its next use. I think I’ll go fishing again across the street.

Not sure if it will every be reused now since it has deteriorated so much over the years. Was supposed to be developed but it appears that the deal may have fallen through.

This is extraordinary, for ALL the wrong reasons. Thank you for sharing it, even/especially at this late date. Didn’t someone just pay a lot to prevent a “tax sale?” And doesn’t have to mean a plan to claw this nightmare back from the brink is still in the works? Are the forces of inertia in Scituate really that powerful? In the absence of affordable housing in our town what is actually the driving force that has prevented any meaningful progress in this critical area. So many questions with no rational answers, so little time…

Excellent video! Would you also be able to get any views of the peninsula to show if it and the boundaries have been protected with hay bales as required? Thank you for doing this remarkable video!

Since no demolition or construction has started, there may not be any hay bales in place yet not to mention that the town and DEM would be monitoring work underway. Also, I cannot easily see what is below the current tree cover to view it. Once the leaves fall, it may be possible to get a better view of the peninsula.

Sad that Hope Mill has been allowed to deteriorate like this. It didn't have to end this way.

Yes, very sad indeed. The architecture and materials used back then is unequaled to what is built today. I do hope that it can be developed as planned to restore the original stone building to original condition so this piece of our history will not be lost. Another sad mill in Westerly I think may have been demolished by now but at least I was able to capture it before it was lost forever: kzbin.info/www/bejne/ipy2fn6gYpmoack

Thank you for your wonderful video. I suspect that the mill buildings are too far gone for the current developer to proceed with his original plan. The developer's original plan called for 175 apartments. At this point, the frame of the original mill buildings have largely collapsed. What's left of the existing buildings' wood frame has rotted. The collapsed interiors of the buildings are filled with lead paint and asbestos. All that can be safely salvaged are the facades of the main buildings. To clean out the contaminated debris from the exosting building install new building frames, align the new frames with the existing window openings, create a proper foundation to support the new frame and to tie the new frame into the remaining facade would be enormously expensive. @@Michael-RI

Thanks for this update. Very disappointed that there may be no chance for reviving and repurposing at least the stonework part of the mill. No doubt about all the contaminates being a very costly undertaking for anyone interested in that property. Please keep us all posted should any new information about the mill that may arise.😥@@pldevries

On August 10, 2023, the Scituate Building Official ordered the mill buildings (those with with partially or totally collapsed roofs) demolished immediately citing the state building code. He also revoked an existing building permit which the mill owners had not acted on in over a year. He declared the mill buildings to be unsafe. He cited likely movement of exterior walls and the partial or total collapse of the buildings. On Aug 31st., engineers from a Providence engineering firm were seen inspecting the mill buildings presumably called in on behalf of the building owners. Over the past decade, there has been no effort made to repair or maintain the Hope Mill buildings. It's been a decade of demolition by neglect.@@Michael-RI
