My husband and I worked the harvest in 2018. I didn’t think the work was hard, but what was hard was the long hours, the cold weather, and being on your feet for 12 hour shifts. The year we were up there, the weather was horrible, so the harvest would stop and we would be sitting in the campground for days on end. The work days were often not busy and would drag on making for extreme boredom. We were in a remote location with very little to do on shut down days. What should have been a two week harvest ended up lasting for 6 weeks. That being said, we met some of the nicest people who we are still in touch with. The locals were also very nice and welcoming. It was a unique experience for sure.

I recommend wearing two pairs of socks if you have *any* concern of breaking in a boot. Stocking up on those chemical hand warmers is a good idea because when it gets cold, they sell out.

Work wasn't hard but long hours and COLD. Not easy to shop, laundry, etc depending on your location. Money is ok but if you are not close by, it is in the middle of know where! You will have a LOT of travel expenses. The year I did it we had good weather and worked 16 days straight. Last year they had a LOT of down time and really bad weather. You commit to 30 days even though there are only 14 days of work.

Just how cold was it? (sincere question) and was that the night or day temp? Which state?
@CamboLivin4 жыл бұрын
@@steadmanuhlich6734 , I was stationed at Humboldt, MN and camped in Hallock, MN. I was on night shift, 8:00pm to 8:00am. This is an easier shift for shopping, laundry etc as things are open during your off hours. Day shift had fewer options for shopping, etc. My year was mild weatherwise. The lows at night were in the mid 20's. If it gets too cold they shut you down because the beets freeze when they come out of the ground. I met some great people there. Everybody over 40 years old were phenomenal. Half of the millenials were a total pain in the butt with no work ethic. The other half would make their parents proud!

Mike Higbee good info. Does the night shift get a differential in pay?

Thanks for the informative interview Bob. 60 years old with a bad foot, never be able to last 12 hours- not for me. Maybe when I was 40. Like you said not for everybody.

I've known people that did this harvest work. Tough work some of it but it pays fairly well.

Good information, everybody should listen to video several times and read all comments to make sure you know exactly what you'll be doing. Sounds like good temp job. Work hard for short time.

I did the beet harvest 2018 & 2019. There isn't enough information given to workampers about how much of the chemical "Round Up" that is used on the beets and in the mud and dirt you are covering yourself in.

It is weird there. So sterile. No worms in the soil. No bugs or flies in the fields. Only near the river did I see bugs.

If you really want the cash driving truck for a farmer is much better same hours only in a heated cab most pay around 20 to 25 per hour but you do not get overtime and you do not need a commercial driver's license

Hi Bob, another great "Next" video as usual. I'd like to refer back to the video you did a few days ago, on the nice little RV camp retreat South Of Tucson. Great affordable place, but it's a long ways from here. How about sleuthing out RV camps like that on this side/California side of the state border. I'd love to have a retreat/future retirement spot to fall back on, close enough to come back here once in awhile. Thanks in advance. Stay safe and healthy. cheers Boots Langley San Diego/La Mesa, ca

Thanks Bob..what about driver jobs there?
@CamboLivin4 жыл бұрын
There are a TON of driver jobs, but not through Express. All the drivers are hired by the farms. The pay is MUCH better than with Express too.

How long is the lunch break, and how many 10 minute breaks do you get in an 12 hr shift?
@itsallaboutjesus89354 жыл бұрын
Exactly! I'm interested, but I didn't think it was legal to not allow 15 &/or 30 min breaks even in an 8hr shift. Maybe because of the "workamp/temp labor" job structure.
@CamboLivin4 жыл бұрын
The foreman I had gave us a LOT of breaks except during the first three days when it was SUPER busy. It seems like we had a 30 minute break at lunch and a 10 to 15 minute break every 1 1/2 hours. You rotate on your breaks so the pile never shuts down. That can be a problem if you work with people that don't respect break times and take extra time. You can't leave for break until someone is back to replace your position. If you are at a piler with minimal traffic, maybe that is not the case. I worked at Humboldt and we were almost always busy except the last few days.
