In this video I answer common questions many nomads have such as how can I afford health care , how do I see my doctor living on the road, how can I get my prescriptions how can afford health insurance. Today we talk about many different types of health care and health savings accounts. We also talk about medicaid and state administered health programs.

But can you choose your own primary doctor for consistent care? Get in to see your primary Dr within days for appointment? Choose your surgeon if need one? Can you choose hospital of choice for treatment? What’s the wait for an elective surgery? See a specialist within short time frame? Get a second opinion for diagnosis with pathology and have it covered? These are variables that often make US private insurance worth having.
@kimmybee12
@kimmybee12 4 жыл бұрын
@@auroranite Yes to all your questions. I've had quite a few surgeries and never waited more than a week to have them done. I went to the emergency room twice and had surgeries done the next day. One was for a gallbladder removal and the other was for an appendix removal. I can call my doctor's office and get an appointment the same day. I know it's not like this every where in Canada. I'm just fortunate that's how my Doctor's office works. If I want to see my doctor I make an appointment and go in. I'm not charged anything. If I need to have blood work done or need an x-ray or an ultrasound I'm not charged anything. Each province has their own rules 🙂

If you can't get to Mexico or Canada, try Walmart's $4 and $10 prescriptions. Google it for the list, it's quite extensive. Most pharmacies will honor the Walmart prices if asked. Other pharmacies have similar programs.

Proximity to a primary care physician is indeed important, but more important is making sure that the hospital you will be accessing, in more serious medical situations, is a decent one. Not all hospitals provide the best care. Pahrump's local hospital, for instance, deserves your online scrutiny.

In the state of Washington, I used the income based Washington Healthplanfinder and found a high deductible plan for my wife and I for less than four dollars a month. To qualify, we had to have a yearly two person AGI of $66,000 or less. Two free PCP visits a year for each of us, then pay towards the deductible.

The big problem with HSA is that many people can't afford to save $3,500 a year. Also, before anyone chooses NC, please check out the taxes. Flat rate state income tax. Property taxes for both towns and counties. Annual car inspections which are good and bad. I agree you need to keep unsafe cars off the road but it's another tax really. The inspections are tied into car registration. You would be returning every year to take care of that. Car doesn't pass? no license plate renewal until you can fix it. They are constantly trying to find more ways to tax us. I'm looking to change my residency as soon as I can after I'm on the road very soon.

Not only the 3500, but HSA are not free. The one I used to have was about 120 a month through my employer. Regular insurance was about $160. Not a lot of saving to justify that huge deductible.

It's still better than paying $700/mo for a single health care insurance plan. $3500 a year equals out to roughly $9.75 a day or $292/ mo. That amount is incredibly affordable in comparison. Most people waste more than that on a latte and bagel every morning. It may not be for everyone but many more people can afford this as opposed to the alternative.

I am 65 and have not visited a doctor for the last twenty years, and I am healthier now than I was when I was 17 years old and had my thyroid removed. I have without a doctor's help watched the body restore full thyroid function, and I am totally off any glandulars. The most amazing discovery I made is that the body has its own self-healing/restorative ability, and I rely solely on the body to cleanse and restore/heal itself. Now, if I broke a bone, yes, I'd use a credit card or emergency fund to get it set and then let the body do the knitting together.

The health savings account never went anywhere because most were "use it or lose it" setups. In other words, you could put in pre-tax dollars, but if you didn't use it all you would lose all that money at the end of the fiscal year and would have to start over again at zero in your account!

From IRS Publication 969: Balance in an HSA An HSA is generally exempt from tax. You are permitted to take a distribution from your HSA at any time; however, only those amounts used exclusively to pay for qualified medical expenses are tax free. Amounts that remain at the end of the year are generally carried over to the next year (see Excess contributions, earlier). Earnings on amounts in an HSA aren’t included in your income while held in the HSA.

There are different type of accounts. FSA (flexible spending accounts) are use it or lose it but you don’t need a high deductible health plan. HSAs (health saving accounts) are not use it or lose it but require a high deductible health plan. Both, if provided by your employer, have tax advantages. HSA can be done even if not offered through your employer.

Many communities have public-funded Community Clinics that accept both uninsured and insured patients. They don't turn people away because they can't pay. Most provide good basic health care. I used to work for the community clinic in Helena, Montana. That clinic also had a referral network of specialists who accepted reduced fees according to our clinic's sliding fee scale. Look for clinics like this online for wherever you're going.

Don't forget about FQHCs (Federally Qualified Health Centers). You can look them up in your area. Your tax dollars have paid for these your whole life without knowing it ☺️ They cannot turn you down for any reason, you also don't need ID (a number of undocumented individuals go to the one in our town with no ID), do have a sliding scale. And if you're unable to pay they are legally obligated to not turn your account over to a collection agency.

National insurance rate is 12% of income. Paid at source, as part of deductions from pay. This now provides cover for all. Your family, the guy next door, the people out of state are not going to die from a preventable disease, meds’ would be made available, although an extra charge of £9 ($10) is made per item, be it aspirin or the most expensive drug you can think of. It ain’t perfect, but I do know that I’m safe, as are my family. And as a pensioner, I no longer contribute.

Crossing state lines with prescriptions can be limiting. My last experience I was told the prescriptions can be transferred once.

And... once you are 65 you qualify for Medicare. You need to sign up during the 7 month period .... 3 months before your birthday, the month of your birthday, and 3 months after. No cost. Part b, costs and comes out of your social security if you enroll. Part d is prescriptions. Remember to at least sign up for Part A.

@Talker pauls part c is like an hmo. Most people don't get it because it limits you to the approved doctors. Most get part b, which is more like regular insurance. B and C and D cost money. I'm just learning by reading articles.

@Talker pauls Medicare Part C is also called Medicare Advantage. Basically it is private insurance that replaces your Medicare. You still have to pay the Part B premium ($135.50 in 2019) and may also have to pay an additional premium. Medicare Advantage plans are regional just like all other private insurance in that you have a network of doctors you can use and have very limited coverage outside your region.

Also, it you're Veteran (making $32,000 or less) you get 100% free medical coverage. Prescriptions can be phoned in, by letting them know to enroll you in the Traveling Vet Program. They will mail a prescription anyplace you ask them.

With the HSA you still have to pay for the underlying health care policy while your funding the deductible money in the HSA. FOR EXAMPLE. I funded my deductible account with tax return money but I'm still paying a monthly cost on the underlying health insurance policy.

I wish more people would refer to it as the Affordable Care Act ACA - yes it happened during the Obama administration but a lot of people fought long and hard to get expanded access to healthcare offered to all people. Hopefully one day we won't have to worry about healthcare and medical bills. Healthcare should be a human right!

In NY the income cap for Medicaid is over $16,000. That's quite a bit of money for someone who doesn't have to pay rent or other bills. Medicaid pays 100% of everything, and they even paid ME $50 to have a mammogram.

Great info. Thank you so much! I sleep with a CPAP, are the power sources in a van or RV enough to power it? This question is of critical importance to me.

Lisa Murphy Sure. It is just like powering any appliance. Just look at the back of the machine to see how many amps or watts it uses and then add that to the total amps or watts you need from your solar panels.
