An OTO-7! That takes me back. I remember rummaging around in our basement storage room--old camping stuff, camera boxes, slide projectors, that kind of stuff. The OTO-7 didn't work; it had some big cracks in the plastic housing like it had been dropped or hit with a hammer or something. I started playing with it, alongside my action figures, because it had such an anthropomorphic design, like a movie robot. A couple days later my dad saw me playing with it and took it away, saying it wasn't for kids. I looked for it a few times, in the storage room, but never saw it again. I pretty much forgot all about that thing until now. Crazy!

It’s crazy to me, how many high-end, and otherwise high-quality tools have failure-modes that are seemingly intentional… designed to fail, and integrated into the because 99.9% of people aren’t craffy or determined enough to fix it on their own, leading to more sales, more failures, and so-on. LIVE TO DIY. DIY TO LIVE.
@JamesChurchill Жыл бұрын
It's intentional, but not quite for the reason you think. You can't make things indestructible, and if you make every part equally strong then when a failure inevitably occurs, it can be in a part that is difficult, expensive, or impossible to replace. So good engineers design for that failure, making specific parts weaker so that they'll sacrifice themselves first before a more expensive failure can occur. The knob on these magic arms is trivial to replace (or repair), but if the joint itself had been damaged the whole arm would have been junk.
@JeffJeffers0n Жыл бұрын
@@JamesChurchillthat makes no sense, your average person will not be doing a 'trivial' fix involving melting plastic and filing down metal nuts. Even if so, the repair will likely ware down again very soon. The entire design of that thing looks garbage based on the fact it uses plastic for any of its parts. It should be composed entirely of metalic pieces only, especially at the high price it's sold.
@trikepilot101 Жыл бұрын
@@JamesChurchill If that were the intent, it would be easy to remove the brass nut. It should be held by a set screw or two, not molded into the plastic.
@TealDobber Жыл бұрын
@@JeffJeffers0nnah, that does make some sense. None is an exaggeration. They may have decided to make the nut strip, instead of the handle crack or the shaft twist. Maybe it was I'll informed. On the other hand, making parts fail to improve sales is legit a thing. But, not always. Reminds me of when features are will work kn a model, but they spend extra to disable it, so you pay more for the one that doesn't have it disabled. I used to support some computers that shipped with colour displays that were disabled in the BIOS. Just a quick switch and you had a colour display. Saved hundreds of dollars.
@mattiasfagerlund Жыл бұрын
A new replacement knob seems to be $16 - not cheap but only 10% of an entire new arm. It wasn't the plastic that failed, so I don't really understand how replacing the plastic with metal would help...

Get a mini split! ❤❤❤❤ I’ve been using them since seeing them in japan in 2004. Anywhere you’d use a window A/C… a mini split is so much better. So quiet, more powerful, and depending on which version, various air cleaning features, auto directional controls…. Not to mention they’re also heaters and dehumidifiers all in one. And they’re much more energy efficient than window A/Cs. Just make sure you mount the outside unit on a nice slab of cement to reduce vibration noise. ❤ Highly recommended!

I put a 9k btu mini split, the smallest I could find, in a 220 sqft work area and it was way oversized. It had no problems getting the room cool but the humidity was terrible. 70 degrees at 70% still feels pretty gross. So I jad to run a large dehumidifier as well, which was pretty loud. This recent heat wave took out the minisplit so it was replaced with a 6k btu window shaker and the room is far more comfortable without needing to run a dehumidifier. If you do get a mini split and live some place hot like Florida, pull the insulation out from around the compressor. I am positive that is what killed mine with this ridiculous heat.
