When I discovered the word, Aphantasia, just this year (!) I felt like everything in my life up to this point, suddenly made sense. My father, an extremely visual mechanical engineer, always became frustrated with my inability to visualize things, from the inner workings of simple machines, to math problems. I always joke that I'd be the worst crime witness, because I don't remember how people look. It was stunning to find out that I simply have a form of neurodivergence, just like someone with dyslexia. I can now give myself a bit of grace, instead of feeling 'less-than.' It is heartening to hear a successful artist as yourself discussing the topic. Thanks, Diane!

This is such a pretty pattern. I can see it on a living room pillow or quilt! I also received my Craftimo X brushes, and I love them. I needed some washbrushes and larger brushes for loose painting, which I have been trying to embrace lately. I used to sketch out my paintings before painting, and it got tiresome. I love how you start free and open-minded and end up with something amazing! - Kelli

I have a fairly limited imagination. I can sometimes visualise things but like you I generally have no idea where a drawing or painting is going. This is probably why I struggle with composition. I do love other people’s imaginative abilities, especially stories. Any stories…books, movies, TV series. Also adult colouring books, where all I have to do is add colour.

What you said about imagining and how to get started really resonated with me Diane. Made me feel so much better especially because I absolutely have to have something in front of me as a reference whether or not I use it or have one of your tutorials on inspiring me. I always wished I had one of those brains where I could really envision something and then recreate it from there. Ah well, I still LOVE putting pen and watercolor on paper as it is my THERAPY ❣️🧑🎨

I really enjoyed this video and your various musings throughout. I was also a nerdy kid who formed a club with badges, etc. Also, I LOVE the fact that you quoted Mma Ramotswe from the No.1 Ladies' Detective Agency, one of my favorite book series! That was so random that I wasn't sure I heard you correctly and had to play it again to be sure. Thank you for "keeping me company" while I cleaned up my desk and did some sketching.

I have read most of Alexander McCall Smith’s books and am going round a second time at the moment! Lovely aren’t they!!!

I used to have a fairly good imagination when I was young, but as I've gotten older, seems my imagination has gone by the wayside. I don't know that I ever imagined in detail though. I know I don't have a photographic memory for sure. Which would be real helpful in painting and art in general. I love this painting; the colors are so calming and my favorite.

Voila mon amie bises a bientot .

I also recently discovered that I have Aphantasia so I know how you feel. I also paint watercolour, (not to your standard) and I have to use references as I can’t imagine pictures in my mind, I imagine in words not pictures. When I first realised other people actually see pictures in their head it blew my mind, I didn’t realise I was different. I’m used to it now and I don’t see it has an handicap anymore, we are all different and no one knows what it’s like inside other people’s heads. I have 4 children and only one of them has aphantasia. Take care Diane and never change you’re perfect as you are. ❤️

I suppose one advantage of having Aphantasia is that you never have to be concerned that your picture hasn’t turned out how you imagined it! 😂 I have clear images in my mind and have learned to live with disappointment! 😂😂😂

I have several frontal lobe difficulties. The imagination thing is just one of them. The rest of the people share some of them as well. I have noticed that everybody does better when the children are exposed to educational opportunities early. In special ed we would have kids usung their imagination as the read. They struggled so hard to read the words that they have no room for thinking. I have discovered that I continue to build on a new foundation I develop for myself.

Thank you Diane! Have you ever used the Inktense crayons? I’m excited to see you use the pencils, which I have, but would be interested in seeing what you think of the crayons because I’ve seen them used and they really do seem somewhat like gouache. I can’t decide if I need them!!😉I think that’s really good advice about having something in front of you! I must be in the middle of the range of imagining but I was taught to have a reference to paint from. Isn’t it interesting about how our childhood affects us? I did love dolls some because I thought that I would be a fashion designer but then got a degree in math and worked in unmanned space flight for NASA but now in old age I’m pursuing my artistic side again! (With your help!) Super fun, I think!! I like this painting! You could copy it and make wrapping paper or a design pattern for fabric! Oh my, I’m having a modern style shower door put in soon. Did your shower door have the metal around it? My new one will be without the metal. Scary really! I’m glad you weren’t hurt!!💕

I learned to oil paint, acrylic, now watercolor, but I'm lost, I can't come up with my own paintings, or anything, that is unless I'm in the hypomanic stage of bipolar. 😵💫😑 Thank you for your videos, the chat and painting. It's wonderful. ❤ I have a very visual mind, for instance. Unless I've seen a word. I can't spell it. Lol imagination, I can't do much, but if someone is describing details of an operation, or bodily injury that is far too graphic. But, "imagine you're at the beach" nope. Can't. Lol 🤷🏻♀️

From the internet: Aphantasia is a characteristic that prevents the brain from forming or using mental images in imagination or thought. It's often described as a visual condition, but it can also affect other senses, such as sound, smell, taste, touch, and movement. I have this but did not know it had a name (and that other people also have it) until now. I always say that if I had to describe my husband to a sketch artist, I would be hard pressed to even come close to what he really looks like.

I am so sad as it wasn’t cheap, I ordered it with some other art supplies, a box arrived, with frames I had ordered in but it had been ripped down the side. It appeared that another packaged had been attached to the side and ripped off. Wouldn’t you know the most expensive thing I ordered had been removed, very hard to take as no one will take responsibility for it. I am very nervous to order it again, just wanted to tell someone who would understand as a 75 yr old 🇨🇦 Thanks for your wonderful tutorials ❤ Jean

When I am reading, I can visualise rooms, areas and where the action is taking place. But I cannot, for the life of me, ‘see’ the characters faces. Even with my own characters in stories I have written, I cannot see their faces at all. They are just ‘shadowy’ people to me. When I am trying to draw and I try to draw what I see, I see it, clear as day, but it WILL NOT transfer from eyes, to brain, to hand. As for angles and perspective, forget it. I know what it is, but again, I cannot transfer the knowing to paper. 😮 I am ‘neurodivergent’ so I guess that could be why. Very interesting and informative video. I enjoyed it, and the chat. Thank you. 👍😃
