Are Derwent’s Inktense watercolor pencils going to change the way I create? Today I’m exploring them to find the answer to that question! I’ve been using Staedtler’s Karat Aquarell black watercolor pencil for many years and I’m always thrilled by the intense black it gives up when you touch it with a brush. Today I’ve been enjoying that same experience in technicolor! Join me as I explore and experiment my way through a set of 12 Inktense pencils (and a couple of Graphitint pencils) and use them in my loose and free style to sketch and “paint” a whimsical scene from my farm in France. Watch carefully and you’ll see how easy it is to control the color, and the best part is that there’s no time pressure! The pencil will wait patiently for you to be ready to add water! I’m already excited to try this method for my nature journal, sketching with the Inktense pencils outside and then coming back to the studio to add the water. And these plus a water brush would make a simple but effective travel set.

Oh my goodness! Thank you for sharing some of your sketchbooks with us. Lovely and inspiring. My daughter was born in 1986 - the year of the first sketchbook you leafed through! Since i found you and adopted you as my teacher I have filled several sketchbooks ... and now I want to bind some of my loose paintings in a homemade sort of sketchbook. I'm proud to call you my teacher!

I don’t know if I should share this or not….but after my divorce, I felt so liberated or something that I bought all kinds of art supplies and seem to keep doing that!! I have always wanted to draw and paint and have never persevered beyond a few pages in a sketch book. Watching your videos, Diane, makes me wish I had persevered. There is so much pleasure in seeing you transform a white page into a view I long to explore. I will break out my paints and pencils once more and try again. And I will continue to watch you because it gives me such peace. Thank you.

Your happy medium is paint, mine is definitely pencils. I have a set of 24 Lyra aquarelle pencils which I mainly use to sketch, then fill in with paint. I am in awe of anyone who just picks up a brush and paints whatever they want. Without a drawing, I can’t do anything! I’m doing far more mixed media these days, so this is right up my alley.

I was captivated the moment you touched the pencil marks with the water! I have owned watercolor pencils for years and never really used them like this. I am totally amazed. I can’t wait to try them. …. And that is not the only takeaway from this video…. The sheep positions and personalities as well as the chickens, I don’t know why I have never drawn or painted them. Probably because I don’t see any where I live. But in my defense, I saw a turtle the other day, sketched it, and painted it in my daily art journal! Diane, you have inspired me in so many ways. Sometimes I watch the same videos over and over…. And still can’t wait for the next one. Thank you for making my art and my life so much richer. (I’m from Pennsylvania, USA)

Update: I’ve done two paintings so far with the pencils. There definitely is the surprise factor and delight in the outcome. Both look pretty good. The pencils that I already have are Prismacolor, the names are different than yours and probably the selection but they worked quite fine. I got them years ago along with a dozen or so individual pencils when I was learning skin tones. I haven’t touched them since. I’m excited to explore more of what I can do with them. I already have your sister channel and think there are so many ideas. Thank you for all the wonderful ideas and support. My art has grown so much.

Thanks Diane. How beautifully you worked with those Ink Intense pencils. Your picture is charming and I loved watching it come to life. I was delighted when I saw the Ink Intense pencils and went rifling through my desk drawers to find my forgotten ones. A couple of years ago I was 'stuck in bed' and used them with a waterbrush. They were lovely for painting flowers and vegetables...using gardening magazines as I couldn't go out. I am looking forward to trying them again in a different way. Great! 😊

Thanks Katie, and I also want to thank you sincerely for being a real inspiration for me. You’ve opened my eyes to lots of possibilities which I’ve been avoiding exploring for way too long. Our channels are crucial at this time to help people survive all the drama around us. I was fascinated by your adventures in Japan also and your familiarity with so many Japanese products - this is also completely new to me (living in deepest darkest France I don’t get to hear about anything…) and I was wondering how you came to have such a close relationship with Japan. Would love to hear more about that in one of your future videos or maybe you’ve already covered that? Wishing you a great day! (PS I watched your vid with the cockerel - he was great!!!)

@@DianeAntoneStudio Thank you, Diane! That is so wonderful to hear, I’m excited to see where you go next! Such an interesting question, and I have to say in terms of the products, the answer lies here in KZbin! I mostly discovered these brands thanks to watching a lot of artists I watch and getting recommendations from my community too. In terms of Japan itself, it’s a country I’ve just fell in love with! It’s such a different way of life there and much more my speed. There is just so much respect (for each other and for nature) that I sadly feel missing over here. Perhaps I will share more in a video; thank you for asking as it’s not a topic I’ve thought to explore!

Hello Diane, I must admit that your title has intrigued me... and here I am watching your video. Sorry for my absence. I have been working with acrylics lately because I can paint "practical" things with them for sale. My house is overflowing with my art, so now I focus on creating art that can be used by others. And, since there are many amazing artists who paint wall paintings, I choose to focus on practical things such as boxes and furniture. i can only do so much at one time. Ha, ha. I do enjoy watercolors and had fun with them. and, thanks to you, have quite a stash of supplies of paints and papers. Thank you for this an incredible gift you have given us in this video, sharing your memories with us. This is next bit is personal. Feel free to ignore it. One of your artworks had a different name on it and it sounded like you said that you were married. Different married name than your current? I completely understand the thrill of using watercolor pencils. Loads of fun. However, I am glad that NOT everyone is as thrilled as you and I. We wouldn't want an entire world to be watercolor artists. We need people who are thrilled about the stuff that we are not. Otherwise, nothing would be done. Ha, ha. I absolutely love that you approach each video as though you were teaching a brand new would be artist and try to make it easy for everyone. Many other artists do not understand the necessity of going through these basic steps each time. They don't think that each video might be an introduction into their form of art and that the viewer needs to see the basics. You do go over the basics and I just want to commend you for it, for your everlasting patience. Thank you for your nurturning attitude towards drawing and for pointing out the tricks to each thing. Thank you for this video.

I’m glad to hear you too watch the videos of other artists. Some how the mystery of artists is that we (let’s call me a “pre-artist”) feel that real artists just seem to have this vast spontaneous set of images in their mind that they can put on paper. You too need inspiration. I need lots and yours are lovely

I have absolutely no imagination and no images exist in my mind. I’m one of those people with a high level of “aphantasia” or the inability to picture things in detail in my head. It's a very lovely place where you live and I enjoyed very much seeing it and listening to the birds singing. I thought this would be perfect for having a pony (or better two 😁). My oldest paintings are from the time when I was about 11 years old from school art class and all the stuff I did since then was collected. I had an interruption of approx. 25 years when I did not paint but started again after my retirement in 2019 when I discovered lots of interesting artists on KZbin and you are one of my favourites. I have inktense blocks rather than pencils. They too languish... I'm still obsessed with sketching and watercolours. My first sketchbook, before I realised paper type is important, is terrible for wet work, so now I sketch and paint on good paper and stick it into the first sketchbook. It's my #100day project, and I'm determined to fill the bally thing! This painting is much more lovely than I expected for pencils. I'm a heartless monster I guess!! Hahaha. I love your sheep! I keep thinking I must paint sheep. We're surrounded by them here. Your pen work at the end is so effective. I think I put in too many details. Loose works better. Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts Margaret, they always count for me. I’m sure you’re not a heartless monster, that’s reserved for my husband (who has little to no aesthetic sense poor man!) For me the idea of the blocks makes me think of LARGE paintings where you can make the most of their size. The pencils are much more my scale personally, as I do like to draw reasonably accurately. There’s something for everyone out there at the moment isn’t there!

Thank you for this video on watercolor pencils. I also have a set and I don’t know how to use them to the fullest. This video was very helpful. Yes, I’ve gotten into a habit doing what I’ve always done and I’m working on breaking that mold. Love your work and it’s a joy listening to you and your perspective on various topics! 🎨👏👏👏❤️👍

This is such a charming scene. I really like watching you draw - the pencil sketch to start things off. I've gotten a little more confident in my pencil sketching from watching how you do it. I have the Staedtler Karat Aquarell set of 12 watercolour pencils - pretty similar to your set of Derwent - and this video has given me some new ideas on ways to use them; thanks! I especially like how you got some great colour blends by putting down two or more pencil colours and then adding the water to bring them to life.

This picture captures so much of the personality of the livestock. Perky, pecky excitable chickens and sanguine sheep!! The colors are intense for sure, and the blending makes the colors believable. I'd love to walk out there and feed them all!

As you were talking about the control the pencils provide I was thinking about some cactus I just recently painted. I did not do a background but wished I had and now I feel inspired to create a background color with some watercolor pencils I have. They are not this brand but hopefully I can get some good pigment out of them. Thank you for sharing and always inspiring♡

Thank you for another fun landscape and with sheep 💕 I have been trying some of your tutorials and loving all of the ‘easy’ ones on my new journey! You had made a few comments about the 1967 Forsythe Saga, and having a love for period style movies I gave it a try. Absolutely loved it and after 23-24 episodes I simply did not want it to end. But like all things it did end. 🤣 Thank you for all of your tutorials, sketches and easy way about you. Have a great weekend!

I just watched someone else’s video on using these pencils. I learned that these you are using are actually ink and not the same as other water color pencils. Now I want to buy a set of these as well because I love the look. I have found that if I’m not careful using my Faber Castell watercolor pencils, I lose my shading. The layers just blend into one solid color. I see these ink color pencils are a bit different to work with. Love them!
