The land tour of my off grid property continues, taking in the top two terraces which also happen to be the most cluttered chaotic! I have big plans for both of these spaces and I'll be working slowly towards achieving my goals.
I think I've got a beautiful property and I'm excited to share my vision with you!
Thanks for watching, please consider subscribing if you haven't already. 🙂

I feel that you have so much going on that it is quite overwhelming just watching your video. I do like the idea of working on your front living area with a deck so you can enjoy your home when you make your cuppa in the morning. An outdoor kitchen is a great idea along that wall. Moving the Polly tunnel is also a good idea that maybe you can do while your family is there. An easy way to do that would be to buy a new one and put it down in one of the terraces first and then relocate the contents of your existing one and then relocate that beside it so you have double the amount of storage/usage space. No more fruit trees until you are able to manage them more. I wish I had the money to help you do just one of these things. Maybe contact the company who sent you your first Polly tunnel to see if they are willing to sponsor you again. Just my thoughts.

I don’t know if you can get weatherproof shade cloth in Portugal but it is terrific. We bought it by the meter but it also comes in a 30m roll and it so far has withstood hail, cyclones wind and very heavy rain. Coolaroo 1.83m natural weatherproof shade cloth by the meter Pillar 3.6mx10m 90% UV waterproof shade cloth in a roll. We have it covering our caravan and our outdoor area. We got the natural colour so we could get the light through it. We have had it up for 21 years and it’s still going strong. Love your ideas. Everything takes time so enjoy what you are doing without killing yourself doing to much at a time. I love the natural look you seem to enjoy so don’t listed to the people who seem to want to tell you what to do and how to do it. I think they forget that you are doing most things alone and like us you have very hot weather that just saps the energy out of you on very hot days. In very hot weather if you push yourself too hard you can get very sick. Slowly slowly is the way to go because you then enjoy what you are doing. From Queensland Australia

Hi Kirsty, ive always loved your land and looking forward to all the things you have planned for it. The pergola over the future pool decking defo needs to be covered in grapes 🤪🤪 If it was my land there's a few things i would prioritise (got a funny feeling the year of the tool shed is going to be 2025 🤣) I would be trying to find a way to widen the access road, you have so many plans for your land and being able to get all your future materials delivered direct to each terraces would help you so much, and a bonus would be that it clears up the top terrace, for other stuff lol it would also save you so much time from moving things from the top terrace down to where its actually needed. The next thing i would prioritise would be making the steps bigger at the plunge pool. I'm ex construction health and safety and those steps fill me with fear of someone tumbling down them every time i see them. 🙈🙈 I defo think an outside kitchen would be great but would it be better down on the entertaining terrace?, rather than attached to the side of the house cause you're probably going to be cooking down on that terrace anyway especially when you have guests and its closer to the fruit and veg when it comes around to the times for processing it all. Can you get thinner IBC Tanks in Portugal? i know the area behind your house isn't big but if you could fill it with water tanks it would be a great place to store your water along the back wall, not only does it keep them out of sight, cause lets be honest IBCs aren't pretty lol but would help keep them out of direct sunlight and help prevent algae build up. I've seen a few rainwater catchment systems where they've used multiple blue barrels stacked to create water storage solutions and i think those barrels would fit in the space. Anyway sorry for the long post, my head is buzzing with all the ideas of things i would do if it was my land, so i can imagine you must be the same and loads of people will be giving you loads of advice lol Most important thing of all is that your parents and your friend arrives soon so enjoy the time with them xx
@PortugalfromScratch
@PortugalfromScratch 5 ай бұрын
Definitely grapes! I already have some growing and they're a decent height. I wish I could widen things but the land next door isn't mine and there are huge stones on my side plus the house limits things, too. Perhaps I can more my stones... let's see! I can also now get deliveries down onto Sinead's land, too. The entertaining terrace by the pool will definitely have cooking stuff too! In the future I won't have IBC tanks holing water, I'll hopefully magically find money for a 2,000 litre tank that's round and more vertical.... should help with space. Thanks for your ideas!!
@woomobile
@woomobile 5 ай бұрын
@@PortugalfromScratch You never know Kirsty looking into widening the road might uncover some useful big stones for the toolshed 🤣🤣 I have had another idea about water storage solution which might solve more than 1 problem but don't know how to described what i mean so will email you a picture (which might not help describe what i mean lol) It might be a genius idea or totally stupid lol

I think it helps to live in a place awhile to see how to develop it. You get to see how you use the spaces, what you would change to make it work better, and what your needs really are. I think your ideas for the different areas make sense and will eventually give you your perfect home.

You can get backpackers who have their own tent and all you need to do is feed them who can come and help you. I know you like to do things alone but sometimes you need help. You only need to have them for a couple of days and they could put up their tent on your lower terrace so they are not in your way. I watch a young man who is building his property up in the Italian Alps and this is what he does. Now the same people keep coming back each year if he needs work done. All he does is set them work to do and they sit around his outdoor fire pit to eat very simple meals he prepares. He gives them a beer or a wine as well. 😂 They live on his property in their tents away from where he lives. Good luck your ideas are great. From Australia

I actually did a lot of volunteering like this and learned some great skills along the way. Managing volunteers can be a whole but thing and I'm just not set up enough either with time or financially for it. Maybe one day, though, because it would be cool to have help but also to offer people an opportunity to learn. I really appreciated that!

Like say, at the beginning or the end of the day? I don't mean making it look prestine, just stacking buckets and bricks you have used, folding stuff, rolling up your water hose, or strim a dedicated area?

Having a space for friends and family is excellent too. Re figs, I sometimes halve then and then put butter and Marsala liqueur into a pan and par cook for a few mins (heating both sides) then serve as a desert with mascarpone (also yum with carved mango cheeks, skin on). Re shed, maybe tackle a few stones at a time using up a mix of cement each time. Easier on the back but gets it built over time. Fire pit with cooking grate at one of the seating spaces and barb-b at the other or both in each! It’s always nice to hv a heat source at hang out spaces.

Really appreciate the land tours, i seem to have lost a sense of what is where 😂 Kirsty, can you use your map making skills to draw your land as it is now and your ideas for it? Long drop ... check where your water sources are down hill, i didn't realise you had so many water sources. I can just imagine a long table lunch under your lemon/olive on that terrace, cocktails on the deck, splash pool fun ❤ Slowly bringing tree heights down to make them manageable is a good plan. Fig, fennel and walnut sourdough bread 🍞 is the best use for figs, or fresh on a cheese platter IMO Outdoor kitchen area, maybe sink and pizza oven, quick and easy to make pizza and bread close to the house, near wood store on the sunny wall? It's exciting to be working on entertaining areas 🎉

You have so many ideas, I know it's not your way but if you concentrated on one at a time & completed it you probably wouldn't have stuff all over the place in heaps which you then need to tidy up at some stage. I'd love to make the pieces of garden either side of the door directly in front of the house weed free & planted up for you & keep the gravel there raked flat so you'd have a chaos free zone to return to every day. The more jobs you begin then abandon until another day the more you have to finish & the associated materials are left lying around to sort out at a later date making yet another job to do. I know how you like to work so I know this will fall on deaf ears 😂! Hope your parents have lots of energy to help you get it straight before they go home again.... 😮

Hi Kirsty! Your dream sounds absolutely amazing. I know, from watching your designs inside, that it will all be beautifully designed. Could drawing a landscape plan help? it seems like you have things on your land that could go into a large storage shed for protection and to give you access to the land they currently sit on for strimming- bags of plaster, soil, pots, barrels, wood for building etc. I realize a lot of these materials are just now waiting for summer and your parents to come. Perhaps you could estimate by "inventorying" the square footage necessary to store those things inside with space to walk through and access that material. I assume the stone barn you're building is just for your woodworking tools and wood working? Also, having a place to dump the sand, gravel, fire wood, etc. in one service area, out of view, (maybe just a structure with great big doors and a roof,no walls, between your home/view, so that there is a consolidation of similar types of material handy, but unseen. Perhaps it can be located near your tiny house, on the other side the storage barn you're building. Perhaps where the hut with the seedlings is currently located, but in line with your new storage barn? You could build a cob and/or brick pizza oven and barbeque on a wall between the lower patio and long-drop toilet and water storage that could block the view from the patio to that utility area? anyway, just a few suggestions. I hope it helps. best, Angela

Your land is nice, I like the elevated location and the terraces. I would also move the polytunnel out of sight to the parking terrace as it is ugly, though practical. For the top terrace you might create small islands with flowers or vegetables surrounded by stones with patches of woodchip in between. You might also think about moving your solar equipment out of the house to the side of the house as it seems to be quite noisy and you could use that space as pantry or storage.

A functional courtyard is a huge goal of mine! But man... everything takes so long! 😁 I'll put a nice big window in there eventually and also have a hangout area out front. Double doors would have been cool, though!

Putting a covered porch on the front of the house would double your living space and provide shade and a nice eating sitting area

I’ll have a shaded area there for sure! I can’t wait to be sitting out front. 🙂

Hi! No sorry, I don't pay much attention to what's around. Only things right next to me and I've already got friends keen to find something close. I found my place on the Pure Portugal website... good luck!

Have you considered moving the trees that are so close to the pool and water tank . I did watch it done on another channel

No... they're very well established and I think I can find a way to manage the stuff that falls. Plus the shade will definitely be needed. 🙂

Love the tours. One request. Pan a little slower please, because when fast, can’t focus on anything and upsets my equilibrium (a delicate thing to be sure)😊

Not sure if you covered it previously, but did the property come with a habitation licence or did you have to jump through hoops to get one?

What is going on under your neighbors olive trees that there are no weeds and it looks like a beach under them? Is that some sort of mulch?
@PortugalfromScratch
@PortugalfromScratch 5 ай бұрын
They attack it with a tractor and plow and also spray... I don't think it's a great way to do things but it's the Portuguese way. Everyone around me does the same... I prefer to cut the grass with a strimmer and mulch it back into the soil.

Dreams of a summer night. All for the future. You have not finished any project that you started till now. You know that the bla-bla and ideas don't help to prove any work to your abandoned land, to your hoard, or at least to build your indoor bathroom, the last year. I am wondering how you can live in such a mess.

I want to follow your videos to see how things are done but I find it difficult because you start a project, stop in the middle and go ahead to another one. Then some time later you come back, start again and stop. It is frustrating. I hope you will organize things. The walls are of different colours, it’s it is such a mess all around the place.
