@the Achaean You true, if the soldier is wounded he will probably not move because of pain (for big wounds) and will probably try to stab a time after when the first and second rank are already foward. I read it too about soldiers who volontary fall just to stab the enemy or to get up before them and attack.

@the Achaean Of course, random people can't hold a formation without proper training. Yes but the romans were more flexible and that helps against the phalanx and their right flank. Even with that the romans were afraid of phalanx, I remember reading about the legionnary shiting themselves against this force coming straight to them. The pilum can be good anyway against the aspis of the hoplites.
