Miss the hoppings so much. Travelling fairs on this side of the pond are nothing like back home. My parents took me to the hoppings every year when I was a bairn and I kept going with my mates every year until I moved to the frozen wilderness of Canada! Amazing to see Gilbert Chadwick still going strong! I still remember him and his fun house with fond memories!

I'm 64 and remember my Nana taking me to The Hoppings a few times in mid 60s. She'd always pay to go in a tent and see George, The Gentle Giant. A really tall Scottish guy who'd just stand there in a kilt and shake your hand as you left. My being a kid at the time his hands were massive. You could also buy a postcard photo of him. You took me down Memory Lane Eddie. ❤ Forgot to mention when you could win a goldfish and taking it home in a polythene bag filled with water. They never lasted longer than a couple of weeks. 😂😂

Before people make comments about prices, People don’t realise the showmen don’t want to charge £3/4+ per ride, they have no choice, the rents from Newcastle council have gone up, the cost of fuel is sky high all the rides and stalls run on diesel, maintenance, replacement parts are getting more expensive, staff costs. Everything costs money, it’s a business they’re running, they can’t run it at a loss. I travelled for years on the fair, and every year it got more expensive to run. Just remember before anyone makes any uneducated comments about the showmen and their rides their way of life prices etc, we’ve all gotta make a living, we’ve all gotta eat, we’re just out here trying to entertain the public while making a living.

Loved it as a kid from the early 70's,onwards. I imagined then it hadn't changed since the 50's, it still had its freak shows, boxing strippers etc. The Wall of Death was always a favourite, one year it had two, the rota, rib tickler and of course the dive bombers were magic. Last year I walked through the Hoppings for the first time since the mid 80's it seemed to have lost its soul. It was at one point the worlds biggest travelling fair, then over taken by a bigger one in Japan. It was always the main event in the north for the show folk.😊

They have done a smashing job with it. It’s much more pleasant to walk around than it used to be though it’s a shame some of the old shows have gone as the fella mentioned. And yes it’s pricey but really, the prices have only risen in line with everything else.

Went last year got a metro so i could leave the car at home and have a couple of pints while the kids had fun. All of the beer places wouldn't even let me get a pint without spending £7 on something to eat and then issued you with a token that you had to take to the bar and pay another £7 on a pint. Then if you wanted a second pint you would have to buy more food just for another token to say you have had food so can have another pint as they take the tokens off you. Loved the hoppins since i was little but wont be going again this year.

Hi Eddy, another fine video. Could this be a week of no rain for the hopping's? We'll see. I was just wondering if you know how it has become to be known as the hopping's, sure I was told when I was a nipper but can't remember. Any change out of that tenner? Cheers for video mate.

Nice video Eddie, The Gypsy community always gets a bad reputation for leaving rubbish when they move off from places, well what they supposed to do put the crap in the often fantastic caravans, when they quote it costs thousands of pounds to clear a site really???? Is it not a few guys who already work for the council doing a different task for the day for the same pay??? We are told crap to try and dislike people! Cheers Mark!
