Hi Eddie, thank you for your vlog on the history of North Shields and the Fish Quay. I am a local author and playwright brought up in what was known as the Ridges Estate in 1956 and all of my books and plays are centred around North Shields, Tynemouth, Cullercoats, and Whitley Bay. I was surprised that Tom Hadaway wasn't mentioned. Tom could be seen on the fish quay most mornings when I was serving my time as a 15 year old fish filleter back in 1971 as he had a fish shop in North Shields. Tom was also a prolific writer and playwright who wrote many plays about the fish quay. "In Fading Light, The Pigeon Man, God Bless thee Jackie Maddison and The Filleting Machine which prompted me to write a tribute play The Redundant Blade. Tom inspired me to write when he looked at my work one day and said "Keep writing Kidda you've got talent." Since then I have gone on to write 54 books and 26 plays. My first novel "Like Mother Like Son." was published by Lynn Davidson from South Shields. Tom also had a hand in the television series "When the Boat Comes In', with Sid Chaplin. Tom died in 1985 and There is a plaque to his memory on the corner of Howdon Road which was set up by the North Shields Heritage Project. I am very proud of my little town and its history and continue to write and put my stories on the North Shields Nostalgia website.

Really enjoyed this Video Eddie . My Dad was born and raised in North Shields . He actually fished out of that very Fish Quay . He moved to Canada in the early 60's after meeting my Mother . After my Mother passed away he moved back to North Shields where he lived out his remaining days . I have been over several times and always loved my time there . To this day I have many cousins who I stay in touch with there . This Video had several shots of locations that were very familiar to me . There is something about the Geordie culture and personality of the people there that is very unique and heart warming . Thank You for this trip down Memory Lane .

Eddie you just made my day, hell not sure it will be topped this year. As a north shields lad spent many a happy day in the town. Remember playing football and cricket on Dockrey square before the statue went up. The square used to be where the toffs lived and was surrounded by mansions when I was a bairn. Live in Canada now but I'll always be a shields lad. Went yem in may in the early 70's to catch the Shields Festival that was run back then, unfortunately the fest was the later bank holiday so missed it, it was a celebration of the fishing industry but got too big regularly pulling in 100's of thousands of people over the weekend and was cancelled, hope the young lad has that kind of success. Hope you get back and do Tynemouth and Whitley Bay, I miss the Spanish City where I had my first big job, chick magnet in my white jacket. Another great vid, you are a treasure.

Great video and being from North Shields (Dockray Square/Tyne Street) it was good see the area portrayed a positive way. I'm obviously very bias as I was born in North Shields, Schooled in North Shields and most of my family still live in North Shields. However proudest thing I think I can say about North Shields and this video is my daughter who works for North Shields Homeless and the 🌟 on this video. I'm one very proud Dad. Thank you for your efforts, I've subscribed and will be sharing with as many people as possible and getting them to do the same. PS how about a video on Whitley Bay and changes to the Town. From seaside rock and roll bank holiday Mondays down South Parade and the Spanish city to the Nottinghill of the North East. With large number of trendy cafés, restaurants and cocktails bars. There is even a trendy egg sandwich shop.👍

Your videos get better and better and judging by the comments many others agree, well done. A couple of interesting things about North Shields / Tynemouth that you may not know:- Wylam Brewery recently released a "Betty the Bat" beer, named after a famous North Shields landlady. Check it out, great story. Jimmy Hendrix visited the fish and chip shop in Tynemouth front street, the plaque is in the window (well it was last time I looked about a year ago). Keep up the good work 🙂

When I was at school in Cullercoats we were given a homework assignment to record all of the businesses in Bedford Street, North Shields. I believe there were more than 26 businesses operating there. It truly was a busy place, especially on Saturday mornings. Supermarkets weren't around so all shopping was done in the individual shops. When I visited some 50 years later it has become a ghost of its previous self. I hardly recognise the place. That said, there is hope for revival. A town near where I live in Australia has gone through the same cycle and is building back up. People seem to have tired of long drives to big shopping centres and are starting to shop locally. The prices are virtually the same and you don't have to drive 20-30 minutes to get into a multi-storey car park hell.

@@TynesideLife Yep. He was from Wallsend. If you search for "Tyne Pride wallsend ship picture" you can see photos of various ships being built at the bottom of Sting's street where he grew up. This was the inspiration for "Island of Souls" where the ships would "blot out the light of the sun". Unfortunately the street does not exist anymore but fortunately when they demolished it they found the foundations of the Roman fort at the end of the wall. Perhaps there's a video on Tyneside's musical prodigies - Sting, Dire Straits, The Animals, Sam Fender et. al. ?

I'd move up there in a shot if I could as Newcastle is a fantastic city, and 9 miles away you've got Fish Quay, Tynemouth, Cullercoats and Whitley Bay. You lucky buggers!! My ideal weekend is a day drinking down the Ouseburn, then next day start in the station bar at Tynemouth and work our way round the headland tipping our hat to Admiral C on the way, ending up for the finest pies on earth in the Low Lights Tavern. Great video Eddie… I’ve been to North Shields quay area a few times (The Ships Cat does lovely food!) but still plenty I’d like to explore. Your channel is coming on leaps & bounds… well done and keep up the good work 👍🏻 Three of my favourite places in Newcastle are St James Park, Tyneside Cinema and the Lit & Phil. The latter is well worth a visit if you haven’t been… it’s a real gem in Newcastle. It’s like stepping back in time inside- a real peaceful haven from the hustle & bustle. I often go there to read a book in the comfy armchairs. Lots of history as well… Joseph Swan demonstrated the first lightbulb there.

Definitely. The sense of awe and wonder when exploring the Lit & Phil is like nowhere else in the City. Great video. Only just discovered this channel. Just to add for anyone checking it out not from ‘Shields is that the Fish Quay (behind the Fish Market and right along in both directions) has been quite significantly gentrified. There are a number of independent bars and barista served coffee shops including the fabulous ‘Wheel House Coffee’ on Tanners Bank. There are a large number of restaurants that specialise in everything from Fish n Chips (obviously), Grilled Meats, Burgers, Bistro style food and an excellent Mexican restaurant (Lobo Rojo) in the ground floor of the brilliantly refurbished Irvin Bldg (30 seconds from the Low Lights Tavern). As you head towards Smiths Dock (inland) The Salt Market Social (which is mentioned at one point) is a street food market place similar to the Hawkers Mkt under the Tyne Bridge and is great for families or a night out. It is also very close to the ferry crossing. The Smoke Houses (big industrial apartment blocks that hang over river) at Smiths Dock are home to the ‘31 The Quay’ restaurant serving high end and indulgent dishes. Tanners Bank at one end of the Fish Quay is home to the wonderful ‘3 Tanners Bank’ bar and leads right up to Northumberland Park, a landscaped park with visitors centre, duck ponds, play grounds, bike track, 13th century ruins, fairy/ elf trails and served by the Pow Burn tributary that runs into the Tyne. Adjacent to the Fish Quay is a small beach within the mouth of the Tyne that is very popular with families and dog walkers. There is a cycle and walkway from the beach that runs in front of the brutalist Knotts Flats and up to Lord Collingwood’s monument that overlooks the mouth of the river, the black middens (a reef famous for ship wrecking) and beyond. The old Life Guard lookout (in the video) can be visited as it is right behind the monument. From there you have arguably the best view of Tynemouth Priory and you are now 400/500 yards from the Priory, Castle and Tynemouth Front Street. There’s a lot to North Shields (including a relatively successful non-league football team) and it’s a lot bigger than most people think. It’s also home to Tynemouth Cricket Club, Tynemouth Golf Club and Percy Park Rugby Club. A bit of a long comment but I hope some/ any of that is useful to people.

Born and raised until I was six in Percy Main, before we moved to Newcastle, I have very vague memories of North Shields in the mid-1960s (left in 1968) so great to see videos like this. I have memories of a 'huge' (probably wasn't) concrete ship we'd play on at possibly Cullercoats? Anyway, I played on The Lonnen in Percy Main probably from about the age of four or five. Happy times!
