To clarify: The reason I use the Mayflash vs whatever stick is used on the Hori mini for the stock-parts preference right out of the box is because I have the Mayflash f500 Elite which specifically comes with Sanwa parts. Normally, Mayflash sticks won't come with those parts integrated.

I got the PS5 version just to experiment with the arcade stick style. I loved this thing. My buddy let me use his arcade stick eventually and i actually perferred the buttons being smaller and closer. This was just a test at first but now it is my main option for all my fighting games.

Just got this one the other day from Best Buy. The feel is nice but it sounds wildly different from the one in this video and others. Whether it's the spring or the switches, the stick has a really loud metallic ping (different and much cheaper sounding than the typical click sound ) with every movement. can't tell if that's normal?

@drogba6487 mine does have the click sounds but I don't think they are super loud. they sound like the bigger hori stick.

Great timing on this video for me, I just got my first stick a couple weeks ago. It's the total opposite of this one here though, it's a HORI RAP VX and it is a beast. I'm primarily a pad player but recently I've been running into issues with controller durability so I wanted to start to learn this input method for the long term. Pad vs Stick is a very interesting topic to me but that's a discussion for another day. I will say now that I've finally tried it out myself and started learning about them it's really interesting seeing what everyone uses and how customizable they are. Mine came with a stock Sanwa JLF lever but after doing some research I got an oversized actuator and a heavier spring (both of which were dirt cheap I might add) to tighten it up and it really brought the stick alive for me. I plan on eventually trying an Seimitsu LS-56 at some point too.

Hey Chinopolis! I was actually talking with Aktane yesterday and he filled me in on the situation. Stoked to hear you're delving the arcade stick ethers now. Yeah, I know what you mean - it's one of those things where you don't really start appreciating the full spectrum until you have one of your own and begin grasping all the different aspects and how others work with them. The more invested I get with sticks, the more interested I am in exploring and sharing more. I'd like to swap the actuator and spring in my Mayflash but at the same time I feel it'd be a prime opportunity to snag either the Seimitsu LS32 or the LS56. Knowing me, I might do both and have both in different sticks but I'm in no rush right now. Also, I haven't actually heard of the RAP VX. I have the RAP V (the red and black Nintendo Switch one) so perhaps they're similar to some degree. Thanks for watching!

For me it’s a perfect go-to option and the only stick that is always out of the box and remains on my desk. While it used to be $78 normally, I believe “they” permanently adjusted the price since it’s still sitting at that price yet no discount amount is shown anymore (Amazon.ca anyway). I’m not familiar with the Pro-N but I do enjoy the RAP-V and that was actually my first stick, though I couldn’t tell you the last time I used it.

oh i remember this little guy ha, this was my very first arcade stick (well the older type) many years ago. It's a cutie. Fantastic stuff! I trust it will do the trick for you and be sure to let me know how things go with your first stick! A few others have expressed interest in the balltop. Keep in mind that, depending on how the stick feels to you, you may want to keep the default balltop on there for a period first and then switch to the larger size if you feel it's relevant. I love the default balltop, but put the blue one on for experimentation and haven't taken it off yet. In any event, you can peruse FA's balltop category here: focusattack.com/controls/joysticks/joystick-accessories/balltop-handles/ or check out their battop options. You might even be intrigued with their bullet top selection.

I've finished a pretty sick build. I'm using a ASIndo VM6 case, from Indonesia, that is black and gold with my username laser engraved onto the handle and lever circle area. I added black and gold Crown 202 buttons for the main 8 buttons and gold Crown 202 buttons on the side. I got a Brooks Universal Board for the PCB. I'm using a customized Korean lever that is the Sanjuks V7 that has a gold body. I even added parts from ASIndo to the lever such as the green 40A grommet, bobbin/core with the spring, a gold 9mm shaft, a 16mm gold actuator, and a ASIndo bullet top. For the Sanjuks V7, I added a full collar square+circle/squircle guide and it is now my shmup set up. It's pretty pricy but I've been buying parts between months. My first arcade stick was actually the Qanba Q1W which I got for $60 years ago and I added a Seimitsu LS-32 lever with Seimitsu PN-G buttons as my first arcade stick mod. This VM6 build is probably one of my favorite builds if not favorite. But the Qanba Q1W was a good budget stick for PC games which I played most shmups and fighting games in.

Nice review. My first time coming across your channel. Instant subscriber. I am a fighting game fan, but I also have a great love for shmups! Anything arcade gaming style, really. I found a Hori Switch mini on eBay and just won it. It’s a red Street Fighter II stick, with beautiful Ken and Ryu art on it. The stick was offered by a lot of sellers for $100-$200 USD. I won mine at $51. I have a bunch of sticks. MadCatz, at one point, offered really nice sticks. I have two for the 360, 2 for PS3, and I have a custom made arcade stick from Junk Food Arcades. It plays on all systems. I didn’t really NEED this Hori Mini, but I collect games, systems, and peripherals. I saw this and have considered it for about a year. When I saw the Street Fighter II Hori Mini, I wanted it. I’ll send my opinion about it, after it arrives. I have seen a lot of reviews that praise it, like you have. @@Shmuptopiaokay, so I have received my Hori Fight Stick Mini. I have spent about an hour with it and played some Ultra Street Fighter II. King of Fighters XIII is next, and then I’m going to try out some shmups (DoDonPachi Resurection, Ikaruga, Death Smiles I, Radiant Silvergun, Gunbird 2, MushihimeSama…), along with some NeoGeo classics, like Metal Slug 3. So far, I completely agree with your assessment. I love this stick! My stick is maroon and has a Street Fighter II graphic, featuring Ken and Ryu. It’s absolutely beautiful. The quality of the build is outstanding. The buttons have a very satisfying click response and the stick, itself, has a great throw. I cannot believe how great this thing feels in fighting game combat. For the price, it’s a must have. I had concern with the size. It just looked a little too small to be truly useful. I’m happy to report that I was wrong to have that concern. It plays like a dream and it feels fantastic in my hands. As a fighting game enthusiast, first and foremost, this stick is perfectly playable and responsive. I am happy to add this to my collection of sticks. My other sticks are great, and I love them all. The arcade parts in them consist of Happ buttons and stick, Sanwa Denshi, and Semitsu buttons and sticks. They are fantastic. But this Hori Mini is every bit as good and fun to use as my others. I highly recommend this stick for anyone and everyone with even the slightest interest in arcade style games. Switch, PS5, PC… whatever you’re playing on, you cannot go wrong with the Hori Mini Fight Stick!

@@Shmuptopia*update* I just don’t get the criticism for this little stick from other reviewers. This thing is a ton of fun to play with. I am a fighting game fan, as I’ve explained, and I love using this for SamSho, KoF, Fatal Fury, and Ultra Street Fighter II. No, it isn’t as professional as a stick with official Sanwa or Semitsu parts, but it feels fantastic to play with and is super compact. I am considering getting an octagonal restrictor gate (by Hori), maybe a taller bar for the stick itself, and maybe going with a “bat-style” top; just to make mine unique and perfect for me. The buttons feel great. Everything is very responsive. As an old-school gamer, this is fantastic for old fighters, shmups, and Neo Geo arcade games (Metal Slug plays like a dream). My lone complaint is that, being so small and light, I cannot play with this on/in my lap. It just doesn’t work for me. However, as long as I have a flat and solid surface, this stick is great. I just love how it feels and plays. Your review is one I agree with 100%. There just is nothing really to gripe about. I’m so happy I took a chance on my Hori Fight Stick Mini. Excellent. The best stick and parts are the ones that work for you. With that said i would recommend something with exchangeable parts like the Mayflash F101 just in case something breaks or you want to try out some other parts. It's about the same price as the Hori Mini so it won't break the bank and it's quite small if space is an issue. For me personally a short engage throw and a bit of heavier resistance works best for shmups. I have a large collection of sticks with different setups but I almost always use some kind of modded Sanwa JLF with a larger actuator and a 2lb spring as my main. The heavier spring is to limit accidental inputs and the short throw is for fast reaction when tap dodging, dodging or moving in general. I also use a octagonal gate but that's mostly because I like the feel better than the Square. Anyhow it's great to see a video about arcade sticks with shmups in mind contrary to fighting games. It's a pet peeve of mine when people refer to them as fightsticks like it's the only thing you can play on them. =)

I'm very tempted even though I certainly don't need another stick right now for my own use. But there's always sampling and sharing my thoughts ha! I've considered doing a larger actuator and different spring in my Mayflash Elite but I'm also leaning toward the Seimitsu LS 32 or 56. I know what you mean with the whole "fightstick" thing. Hey man, thanks so much for watching! Yeah, I've been meaning to experiment with a different actuator and 2lb spring in my Mayflash Elite. Just haven't gotten around to it. That'll likely be what I dabble with before getting a Seimitsu stick since they're usually sold out when I check. Have a stellar one!

@@Shmuptopia It's a cheap mod to do and worth just giving it a go. I tried a 4lb spring but it was too strong, I remember using Seimitsu sticks in the arcade and they were very different feeling, I'd love to get one to try out.

I just play anime fighters and I love playing on a mechanical keyboard. However, out of necessity I had to chose a cheap and good stick because I don't have my PC with me. This thing being small and the buttons being so close actually remind me of that feel of playing with my keyboard, and I think it's great. The stick itself helps a lot with 360 moves though lol

Im searching for a good device for play shmups and im thinking to buy a flight stick, probably im gonna buy hori mini too but the real question is if a flight stick can be a viable option to play shmups? (Mushihimesama on steam mostly but also G-darius and a bit of Radiant Silvergun, Cambria Sword, Prehistoric Isle and Astebreed)

Thanks for checking this out. As long as you grab the correct one for the system(s) you plan on using it for, you'll be good. As for the stick's viability, that's likely to depend on what preferences you have initially or develop over time in relation to how it feels with one game or another. The Hori Mini remains my go-to controller but other players may not feel the same way. Another option is to get something that will cost a little more but allows you to change parts more easily since your taste in how you want a stick to perform may change over time.

hey man whats the difference between this and the ps5 version, can they both be used on pc? are they the same but one is for pc and nintendo switch one is for pc and playstation? the switch version is cheaper so i would rather pay less for the same controller

Hey, man - thanks for checking this out. At a brief glance, that's essentially the main difference. That said, I've never actually used mine for PC (Only on Switch), but according to the manual and online, it's compatible with PC as well. So if you're only after having a cheaper option and something to use on your computer, then this one would be your best option. Trust this helps and all the best with your purchase and use. Enjoy!

I've never used it on PC myself, though the manual mentions it's PC compatible. That said, it doesn't mention how to connect it. I would assume it's automatic like with the Switch, but if this hasn't been the case for you, then you may need to track down some people who have used it on PC and see what they did.

Out of the box, this will not work with PS5. That being said, there is a PS3/PS4 version of this stick and I'm wondering if some company has made an adaptor which would allow that one to function with PS5.

There may be some sticks that don't spin but this is pretty rare. Out of the six or seven arcade sticks I have here, all of them spin and this is more or less the standard from what I can tell. As for getting it to stop, there may be some methods, though I've never looked into how to do it and personally wouldn't want to prevent the spinning.
