I picked up on the cartridge revolvers being a bit ahead of their time, not a big deal. I really like the pace of the story that centered on Costner's character. We saw it the Friday it came out. It is good. Very good. A lot of people complain about the 3 hours but I didn't mind that so much as it had a little too much going on at one time without our being able to figure out all the characters and get to know and care about them. Lonesome Dove had a lot going on simultaneously but you understood the characters very quickly, cared about them and saw the endearing or awkward relationships to each other. Costner's been very hit or miss with me but I have to admit, this looks good. As for the guns... I dunno... Actors, guns and movie sets are a tricky thing. I think the extras, stuntmen, and handlers are quite capable as are SOME actors but as a general rule, playing a Dr. on TV doesn't make you a Dr. (Yeah, I just dated myself) I just think when you're dealing with a lot of actors and others on a huge production like this it's just a matter of safety to keep it simple. Cartridges make checking things fast, simple, and easier for everyone concerned. You have X number of cartridges when you start and that just simplifies accounting for everything. I'm willing to forgive the cartridges as long as they're not using something wildly out of place... like a Colt Peacemaker or 1911... As long as it looks reasonably close. Now, I say this as someone who carried a weapon on the job for years but have never set foot on a film set. I'd be happy to hear the thoughts of someone who's done it.
@ArizonaGhostriders5 ай бұрын
Well, I have made 12 movies wearing a gun. Sure, the presence of blank cartridges make it easier, but not so much safer. You can have an armorer load up a bunch of percussion blanks and it could take longer to setup, but it would be accurate.

The “dance .44’s” are inaccurate because the dance brothers (confederate colt copiers) were established in 1864 a year after the movie is set. Also it appears the rifle the kids point at each other in the beginning is a 1885 high wall, in 1863?
@ArizonaGhostriders4 ай бұрын
"By Oct. 1862 the Dance brothers were selling handguns to the Confederacy. An invoice from that month shows the San Antonio Arsenal received 11 six-shot pistols." So, the real issue is that in total there were less than 400 made for the Confederate forces, not the public. Would a gun seller on the Texas plains be selling them to civilians? I didn't see a High Wall, but I'll watch again!

I wasn't sure of the year, but now that you said 63, seems like I saw a 66 or two also. The cartridges in the 47s got me also. I am not a big fan of Costner, but I heard him tell about trying as you said to keep the spirit alive, so I had hope. It however seemed to go down too many rabbit holes for my taste. Then maybe as it comes together on down the line, maybe it will be better, I hope it does. There are too few westerns anymore, and I hate not being more supportive. I may be imagining things, but I seem to recall the reference to Apaches taking scalps, which was not a thing they did very much of, however their scalps had a bounty on them at the time. I really liked this movie. I will point out if you look closely, you will see that the big conversion it is actually a colt dragoon instead of a walker. I have actually seen a colt dragoon that had been converted by a gunsmith to take a cylinder that could be loaded with 44 henry. Probably not a very accurate gun as the bullet was slightly smaller than the bore. It was in a picture that claimed 1864. It was crude and nothing like what was shown here "way too many conversions in this movie," but since the dragoon did exist and the 1860 henry cartridge did exist, it was not impossible in 1863. That being said, I just really like the movie, and i'm probably reaching pretty far here. Lol

Dang, you're right. I chose the wrong behemoth. Apologies. I keep hearing about the rare occurence of modified percussion guns for the Henry cartridge in the ealry 1860s. Until someone shows me proof of a bunch of settlers in Texas with modified revolvers I'm sticking to my story!! 😎

@ArizonaGhostriders lol, I know. Of all people, I should hate this movie...... but I can't, lol. I'll give the cartridge conversations a pass cuz with some characters if they're being paid decently enough they could *possibly* be *very early* conversations but it's just a small thing to detract. Also damn the cast was so good. Also Kevin himself has said "this isn't a story of anyone but a story of everyone. It's how they moved not who was moving. I wondered where all those cartridge converted six guns came from as well. There were only 1000 Colt Walkers made, many blew up because the cylinders couldn't handle the 60gr powder charge so that cut the number. Now you see one that's taking a center fire cartridge too. I also think they could have cut the movie to half the time and followed fewer stoies and it would have been a better movie.

Just wondering if they humanized the Apaches or painted them in a much better light. I have a copy of _"The Boy captives"_ by: Clinton L. Smith. First-hand account of twin boys taken by an Indian tribe. Clint's brother Jeff sold to Geronimo himself. Clint's telling of how he was treated, even after assimilating into the tribe is *far* from P.C., very far from it. In the book, he re-counts some horrific things he saw, and that were done to him. While he doesn't ever claim that all tribes were savages, clearly the ones he had first-hand experience with, were. I'm just not a fan of revisionist history, Santee.

the military uniforms changed little for decades but the miss there are the hats: tan or brown hats like that are anachronisms, they were black and only black per regulation…they’re on their own, but they still would never use a non-black hat. it’s why even to this day cavalry soldiers have black Stetsons: it’s a tradition that predates the use of the Stetsons in the first place all the way back to the French-inspired headgear in the 1840s or 1830s I was strolling through my recommendations and saw a picture that made me snicker: you look a lot like Tom Horn that I thought the image was a decolorized screenshot of you 🤣

As long as it gets released.

I loved the look of the Apache s and the cinematography. I didn't care for the Cavalry hats and calling the revolvers Dance revolvers when they are Walkers . Little details like as you mentioned cartridge revolvers in 1863 a bit annoying however the story is intriguing. Critics negative commentary I find ridiculous. One of them mentioned a lack of character development well to this Iwould say we are in part one and the characters are running their course in the next installments so I'm sure their development is a work in progress . Well done on your review 👏 Santee 👏

I'm not a fan of Rogers and Hammerstein, but that was a pretty good rendition at the end.

The cartridges kept bothering me, but other than that I really liked it. I like this newer trend in movies of taking a middle of the road stance to the Indian Wars. Both sides did some awful stuff, and I'm glad that they are starting to portray that more rather than just blatantly side with one or the other.

I'd like to come up with a good reason outside scene brevity when it came to using cartridge conversion guns (loading gate & all) in the film that never existed, but I'm gonna have to give Costner a pass if that's just about the only historical sin he committed. I'm gonna have to see it.

Santee had a miss on cartridge revolvers. Smith & Wesson acquired the Rolin White patent on bore-through cylinders in 1855 and sold license to E. Remington & Sons for Remington-Beals revolvers, commonly called the Model 1858 (due to the patent date). The cartridges would have been paper, until around 1868, when metallic cartridges became common. Many gunsmiths in the West broke patent law and bored through cap-and-ball cylinders in their shops. The real issue was the rarity and expense of cartridges.

I did not have a miss. I said specifically, "The year is 1863, and metallic cartridges weren’t a thing in those then." You wrote, "The cartridges would have been paper, until around 1868." So...yeah, we agree. If someone can find me proof that a gunsmith converted a Colt Walker or Dragoon in 1863 to shoot metalic cartridges and sold them to some random folks in a small tent settlement in Texas, I'll go with it.

he said the metallic cartridge thing at 1:53 and the guns in the movie arent remmies or smiths
@ArizonaGhostriders5 ай бұрын
@@ponydiehl8775 Right. "Those guns" meant the Colt's used in the movie.

One question I have that you might be able to answer is in the movie the referred to the Indians as Indigenous. Were they called that at the time or is that a modernism added to the movie? Because all of my research and readings from the time they are either referred to as Indians, Injuns, or identified by the specific tribe but I'm hoping you know something I don't.
@ArizonaGhostriders5 ай бұрын
There's newspaper articles going back to the early 1800s using the word indigenous in that way. The Liberator paper in 1839 mentions "The Indigenous Indian population".
@tracywallace305 ай бұрын
@@ArizonaGhostriders Thanks I appreciate the info since I've never seen a Western refer to them as indigenous and like I said everything I've read from the time doesn't call them that.

Where do they even find CnB revolvers that take cartridges without a cartridge conversion adapter?
