Both Horizon and Breath of the Wild are amazing games and I thoroughly enjoyed both, but what do you guys like better?
@pressxtojason2 жыл бұрын
I love both but Horizon for me was more enjoyable. While I agree with the general consensus that BOTW was a game changer in terms of open world freedom, the main game is basically "find hundreds of identical shrines and defeat these 4 very samey looking dungeons." What was new was refreshing and interesting but the core game felt pretty half baked. Contrasts that with Horizon which I'll admit didn't push the genre forward, but it was a solid game, the gameplay loop of hunting robot dinosaurs never wore on me, and the story/lore was far more interesting than "beat Ganon" for the bajillionth time.
@isimioyekunlemarktaiwo36432 жыл бұрын
@@pressxtojason identical shrines? they all had variety of puzzles and elements, yea in looks the same but thats because of the theme(story narration) they are meant to look the same but the interaction with them is totally different, but i can the same for horizon, all the dungeons were all mechanical in looks, there were hardly any engagement apart from turn some virtual levers and fight the same enemies. the physics(which is way more detailed) of zelda brings up some interesting puzzles and encounters. while the story of horizon was intriguing it was forced into the game essence of openworld, given restriction to the concept of open world. the problem is sacrificing the core gameplay theme for the sake of cinematics and the superficial..yea you can enjoy it but once it is done, it is dusted, unlike breath of wild..it follows the theme of open world..to explore even if you are done with the story(which is not forced on you). there is a reason why horizon goes out of relevance compared to breath of the wild. and there is the reason why games like elden ring, halo, and even horizon is copying breath of the wild.
@pressxtojason2 жыл бұрын
@@isimioyekunlemarktaiwo3643 We just have to agree to disagree. There were over a 100 shrines in BOTW and by the 20th one I just lost all desire to explore the others because you know exactly what you're gonna get at the end. Plus I don't like to sink 100s of hours in a game so once I finish the story, I'm done. I liked that Horizon wasn't something that required a ton of time to complete and the time I spent in the game I found entertaining the entire time. Plus it was a good "girlfriend/wife" game meaning that my wife was able to sit next to me and enjoy the story too. She couldn't get into BOTW because 90% of that game's appeal is just dicking around with systems. I had fun doing it but she got bored very quick. But yeah, I like that other games are copying BOTW. It brought a lot of good ideas to the open world genre, a genre that was getting stale. I'm not saying BOTW is a bad game, just as some one that values an engaging story, BOTW just didn't do it for me.

Breath of the Wild is really great, but honestly, from a content perspective, it leaves a lot to be desired. The combat doesn't have that much variety, the world sometimes feels too barren, there's not much enemy variety, and most of the designs aren't that interesting. The story is also incredibly underwhelming, and there's not much variety in terms of different things you can actually do (There aren't that many side quests, honestly, and outside of shrines and Blight Ganon, there's no other real objectives.). To me, BotW is a really, really good starting point with so much more potential to fill. Forbidden West is graphically, mechanically, and story-wise, a much richer and full experience. The world feels incredible to navigate and there are a ton of harrowing enemies that litter the landscape. But I feel the comparison isn't really fair. It got to learn from Zero Dawn, whereas BotW is the first game of its like.

To be fair, the original Horizon: Zero Dawn was a direct competitor with BotW as it came out shortly before BotW's release date, had a vaguely similar (though drastically different in the actual execution and presentation) story, and went in the direction of hyper-polishing traditional open world gameplay while BotW went with a more experimental game design of it's own. That said, the only thing Forbidden West probably deliberately borrowed from BotW is the Glider Mechanic, and even then BotW was hardly the first game to have that mechanic, even in the Open World genre.
@skins4thewin2 жыл бұрын
Gotta admit I have loved Breath of the Wild ever since it's launch & it has without question the most complex & carefully thought out mechanics of any open world game without question. That & the game just does all that while feeling so incredibly accessible & easy to get into. It's truly a masterwork there's no question about it. That being said I absolutely LOVE Horizon as well & actually like the combat in Horizon even more! It's more thrilling & threatening vs the rather meager feeling fights in BOTW.

Since you can compare these two games, and since BOTW was mainly programmed for the Wii U around 2014-5-6 (something that people keep forgetting--BOTW was not a game for the switch which is the main reason why it only runs at 900p in dock mode, to the already underpowered switch), it proves that BOTW is at a total different level.
@lnsflare12 жыл бұрын
I mean, you could also compare BotW with Gravity Rush/Ys 8: Lacrimosa of Dana, which was originally designed for the PlayStation Vita, Genshin Impact, which was originally designed for smartphones, or Xenoblade Chronicles, which was originally designed for the Wii and get meaningful comparisons going for the parts that don't rely on sheer processing power, which is what's being analyzed here. If they tried to put them toe to toe in things like number of polygons per model or sheer graphical fidelity, it wouldn't really be useful to anyone to point out that the Switch would probably burst into flames trying to match a PS4/PS5 game of this magnitude on those fronts.

What I will say is that I like Breath of the Wild more for its open world mechanics. Its gameplay systems make for a more interesting gameplay experience just playing around and finding various interactions with its world to use to your advantage. Every weapon you pick up becomes useful, there are so many unexplained physics interactions that you can use generic tools on to shift encounters and world traversal to your advantage. As a sandbox of interaction, it has a better open world than Horizon, both games. But Horizon clearly has it beat for content and story in its open world (having Aloy as a protagonist over Link kind automatically makes this the case, even though botw’s story isn’t even bad, it’s actually really good, but Horizon’s is great), and while it doesn’t have these interactions I mentioned in botw, its moment to moment action still allows for epic proportions of diversity in how you choose to tackle the game’s challenges, but the world isn’t your oyster in the same way. Forbidden West especially captures the same kind of beauty as Breath of the Wild, but with realistic graphics. And unlike Breath of the Wild, you don’t have to switch the voice language to Japanese in order to preserve the experience (because holy god the english voice acting I cannot bear to save my life), whereas in Horizon even minor side quest characters are generally voiced far better than even main characters in BOTW, and when Frozen Wilds and Forbidden West rolled along, they fixed the game’s animation issues and brought them up to speed with everything else, bumping the presentation up to virtual perfection. What I will say is that Breath of the Wild is a better open world game because of how incredibly interwoven the open world is with all its systems. Is it a better game though? I would say not, but that’s my opinion.

I have actually played the first game, foe the record. Having games in a genre build off eachother can only serve to make these games better, after all.

I like BotW well enough, but it feels like a Zelda-themed Jungle Gym that threw away a lot of the stuff that I loved about the franchise in exchange for some physics manipulation shenanigans that have never really engrossed me, while I'm finding myself having to wrestle away from HFW in order to get some sleep for work the next morning because I find the worldbuilding, story, characters, quests, combat, UI, and rewards much more engrossing than I did BotW's.

However horizon is definitely not to be sniffed at ,it's an amazing game and forbidden west is better in many many ways but the super long overly complex cutscenes for me personally holds it back . I know it's a deep story but the whole choose one of three new paths sections cutscene and the choose an explanation is waaaaaaaasay to long and overly complex . Just finished botw. Good game, but massively overrated. Combat is well designed but pointless. Exploration has potential but shallow if you only encounter camps of foes that give you useless weapons or koroks. Shrines are a chore. Boss design feels like was given to the interns. Story, which you have to do chores to find, is otherwise very pleasant. Game is a solid 8.5/10. Edit: also, it's more of a puzzle genre than an action/adventure.

For all it's beauty Forbidden West has ancient gameplay. Lack of dynamic elemental combat can be forgiven in Zero Dawn, but 5 years later and the sequel can barely be considered an upgrade. I know people like it, and it's great that they do! But it feels wrong to praise s gane so much that does exceedingly little. About 7 years ago the Mad Max game came out, it was the height of open world fatigue, it was alright, but the industry was begging for change, for something that felt different. New combat mechanics weren't gonna cut it, the world needed to feel like a part of the experience, and two years later BotW comes out. Was it perfect? No, but it far outdid the competition in making you feel like the world was a real playground, and the world was part of the experience. Chopping trees gave you wood, stuff caught on fire, metals were conductive and so on, who knew that by merely following the laws of physics the game would be so dramatically above the competition? Zero Dawn despite its efforts still felt incredibly outdated and outdone by a game with simpler visuals. Yeah, I know it would be difficult for Guerrilla Games tondo what BotW did and keep the visual fidelity, but they have to start somewhere, even if the game looked half as good as it does now and offered a richer gameplay experience in exchange it would still be an amazing looking game. But alas, were still praising games that are middle of the road like Forbidden West, Assassin's Creed Valhalla and such others that offer stiff and old experiences that are more interested in showcasing hardware power and window dressing than fun, new gameplay.
@40krocks212 жыл бұрын
Ya I can see your point. Gameplay is definitely the most important, but the other aspects of a game hold different amount of weight to different people. Story, characters, music,lore etc all vary from game to game. So for some that can be pulled in by pure gameplay, I think more and more people see games as a new medium of entertainment where you combine some solid gameplay aspects of games, the visual aspects of a cutting edge CGi action movie, and the drama and character development of a good show all wrapped into one. Obviously just like movies there are so many different genres and goals for the audience. I think botw basically said hey here’s a sandbox with insane mechanical details and way to interact with the environment, and horizon is more like hey you have a lot of freedom in this, but also we have more focus on characters and story/native. So I think more and more as the medium has shifted, gameplay is obviously peak, but the other aspects of game are increasingly more important. I think while botw has immense amount of freedom, it’s story, characters, character development, and music are lacking. At least for my taste. It’s a good game but hasn’t gripped me in the way that many other games have. Albeit games that didn’t have amount of world physics that botw has but excelled in different aspects. But hey it’s great to live in a time where there is sooo much variety for pretty much what anyone is looking for in a game. It’ll be cool to see what botw2 will bring to the table, and what the future of gaming will look like down the road as things progress!

It sold more, it won GOTY for a good reason, and BOTW literally set the bar for open world games (look at Elden ring, its getting compared to BOTW not Horizon because it set the bar). Horizon however, does have better looking enemies (at least I think so) and it has a more in depth story.
