Thank you again for the thorough explanations. I installed my flaps yesterday. The radio setup on thee NX8 was a bit different from what you showed, but your guidance helped immensely in deciphering the Spektrum manual. There was no mystery at all in coordinating the flap and elevator deployment speed. The Flap System control page is awesome. After getting the servo and switch assigned correctly everything else can be done from that page. The position of the servo/switch is controlled by a value, -100 to 100, for both ends and the center position. What I found is that I could “reverse” the servo just by swapping the sign in the endpoints. The elevator position was similarly easy to set and so after experimenting and finding that positive values deflected pitch down, I set those to a conservative 10% (half flaps) and 20%. When the winds calm I’ll test and adjust those for perfect balance. I watched you theorize a way to get elevator deployment to synchronize (time delay) with the flaps. I know you have an NX8 now so switch to that and there is nothing extra needed. When you set the elevator deflection in the Flap System page the timing is handled for you. My flaps and elevator deploy at the same speed. Perfect! Why 4 seconds? I timed the flap deployment on my Cirrus and found it is about 2 seconds to go from none to half, and another 2 to go from half to full. When I had a 185 I always deployed the flaps with some finesse (hand operated flap lever). Flap deployment and retraction initiate significant pitch diversions. Rapid flap deployment near the runway would likely result in some dangerous excursions. Rapid flap retraction at low speeds can cause an immediate stall, with no warning buffet. Below 1,000 feet (real airplane) that is deadly. So the long and short of it is I want the little model to behave well, like a real airplane. Are you also a pilot or student pilot?
@BrianPhillipsRC3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the feedback, and so glad you're getting the hang of it! The programmable setup on this model left something to be desired, but since I've been running the NX8, many of these issues have been resolved. Also, I think that I had been running about 4-5 year old firmware on my DX18, until very recently, so that might have played a part in my trouble. Either way, very glad you're getting it figured out!!! Agreed about flap deployment - slow is best for sure ;) As for flying full scale, or being a student pilot...not yet, but I want to get flying soon. I own a plane, but can't fly it ;( Teenie Two. We have a very short video about it, if you're curious. I want to fly ultralights, but I've more or less committed to making everything else in our lives "in order" if I start such a potentially dangerous hobby....4 kids and wife depending on me...so might not happen as soon as I want it too... Have a Happy Easter, if we don't speak another 3-4 times before them ;)

Brian thanks for showing this plane off, I bought this plane after I bought the T-28 because I was too worried to fly the T-28 and wreck it. This plane is a breeze to fly, but the wing creates so much lift it becomes difficult to land it in safe when there is wind, you don’t have enough down elevator to overcome the lift. It’s so confidence inspiring that I’ve actually been practicing flying without safe more and more. I figure a couple dozen more flights with this plane and I’ll celebrate with the maiden flight of the T-28. Thanks again for bringing all the excellent content and making it so exciting to watch. You and the camera crew Keep up the great work!
@BrianPhillipsRC2 жыл бұрын
Very glad you're enjoying the content, and thanks Matt! Great choices of planes, btw ;) As for your elevator concern, yes! Just don't let SAFE get you into a stall - IT CAN HAPPEN, but hopefully you'll be quick with the throttle since you're landing. One tip, you may have heard or seen before, but when landing make sure you get lined up (obviously) then just get settled into an approach. When you're satisfied, use throttle to either increase or decrease your rate of decent. It's a lot easier if you can narrow down the control inputs to just ONE basic control. Obviously, as you advance through the ranks as an RC pilot, you'll want to do all sorts of other cool and fun stuff, like cross controlling the plane on the way down, so you can slow WAY down in a huge hurry, and still stay lined up with the runway - just like the real ones! BUT for the moment, try to really MASTER that throttle thing...it'll make you a way better pilot, and it's how I learned to land, and helped a ton. Good luck! Keep flying Matt! Practice makes proficiency, and you can do it! Never end the day on a crash...yes, fly and land an easy plane. It's such a mental game...like golf...or something similar, you gotta learn, of course, but there's such a huge mental block for many new pilots, and when you break through, it's like a whole other experience - you won't believe me until it happens, and all of a sudden, it's "EASY" to fly. You'll forget about what you're doing and it just happens...so surreal the first few times you realize it's happening!
@mattmiller74942 жыл бұрын
I can’t wait for that ahah moment when it all totally clicks for me. I have a spare 637 receiver that I may swap out in this plane so that I can set the flaps appropriately and change out the bank angles in safe but I also don’t want to rely on safe to fly, for now it’s a great tool though. I read in the manual that this flight control is altitude based which is pretty cool, I was just surprised how easy this plane is to fly even without safe. The area I have to fly in is unfortunately always windy which isn’t ideal for learning but should make me better in the end. I very rarely interact with KZbin personalities but I love your content and you actually respond. Again keep up the great work, I’ll keep watching and buying through your links to help you out. I’d love to see you fly the F35 edf that Horizon offers, that plane looks amazing.

Glad it helped, and keep in mind my repeated mention of the fact that a programmable radio WILL make the experience better. So, if you have one, please set that up and enjoy. @bendrixbailey14303 жыл бұрын
I have one of these. Purchased the float kit too. After some experience with the stock plane I’ll add flaps and the floats. With floats the flaps will be very helpful as it will shorten takeoff and landing considerably, as it does in my 185 aircraft. Although I have no experience with flaps on this model, I can offer some insight from lots of experience with full sized aircraft. Take off: Almost never take off with full flaps. Full flaps are a drag machine intended to kill forward momentum. I never use full flaps on takeoff from grass or pavement. Half flaps are also sometimes labeled takeoff flaps for that reason. On water, with floats, full flaps are used because the extra lift helps lighten the aircraft and break surface tension. Once flying and at an altitude of 10 feet or so flaps are slowly reduced so that the aircraft can speed up in ground effect before attempting to climb. So why not climb on full flaps? Because the drag of full flaps the plane will slow down dramatically if the engine quits, and it will not glide engine out except at a very high rate of sink. So one of two things will happen after a low altitude engine failure. The pilot will either fail to react with lightning quick reflexes and the plane will enter a low level stall / spin, and that is deadly. Nobody ever survives a stall/spin. OR, the pilot will react and get the nose down but the rate of sink will be so high that the landing on water will be destructive. The plane will flip over with you inside and probably unconscious. That is why full flaps are not deployed except during landing (and operations) when the landing is assured and with sufficient airspeed. And as mentioned during water takeoff. What has this got to do with model aircraft? It provides some perspective of exactly what flaps do and when and why they are deployed. My plan is to get the plane at altitude and do lots of experimentation with flaps before attempting to take off or land. I’m expecting the flaps to accelerate the stall and make recovery more difficult. I also expect to need more up elevator to counter the effect of the drag; and more power too! Thanks for the long and detailed explanation. Sure beats the job Horizon did.

After playing around quite bit with the new-to-me NX8 I decided to try some mixing on this airplane. I mixed throttle/pitch, flaps/pitch (needed 2 mixes, one for takeoff and one for landing flaps), aileron/rudder and aileron/elevator. I also moved the servo elevator control rod out to the last hole to increase elevator throw. Then I added 30% elevator expo. it takes some playing with rates to get everything balanced, but it's made a huge difference in experienced mode. I'll never fly it again with the DX-S that came with the airplane. I may make a video with all the settings details!

@BrianPhillipsRC4 жыл бұрын
Maybe your servo is weaker? If you put a longer arm on it, the strength of the servo will not necessarily change. I noticed my flaps didn't really move super free, and this was really loading down the servo. Might try moving it to "wiggle it free" :)

Brian you will have better control with your DX18. I wanted to see if you had trouble like I did getting it working. It wasn’t hard just a pain because the GPS takes up 3 channels on the older version of the plane. I had to unplug the GPS and turn off the panic button in the channel assign menu and move things around to get Aux 2 to show Flaps on my DX9. Still works without doing all that but I just wanted all my flap settings in one place.
@BrianPhillipsRC4 жыл бұрын
I will be doing that tutorial soon. This plane needs a better radio ;)

Brian, I installed the flap servo and connected it to ch8 in the flight controller, the flaps work in all flight modes using the DXs transmitter that came with my RTF kit, also the plane flies more like it should when the flaps are set to the factory settings, it won't "Balloon" out of control like yours does, instead they don't slow the plane down near as much and add more lift so you can back off the throttle to slow the plane for a more controlled landing. Your prop balancing method leaves some margin for error, you should use a balance tool and do it correctly.

On the Dxe to reverse the channel hold both sticks up and in and you will enter program mode and you can use the aileron stick to switch to different channels and push down on the elevator stick to reverse it and the orange light will turn red. Don’t know if it is the same on the new DXS but the transmitters look very similar and I would assume it has the same process

Love your video's. You and your wife are doing a great job. Question, I have the BNF version (installed flaps) with a NX8. If I set the Aircraft type to "Normal/Normal" SAFE works fine, all three modes. However I have NO Flap menu so I can't put in the Elevator correction for mid & full Flaps. If I set the Aircraft type to "1 Aileron/1 Flap" I then get the Flap menu & can make the Elevator corrections but the plane is locked in Basic SAFE mode only.

Hello, you mentioned " flying for forty years " and it brought to mind a crop-dusting pilot. It got me thinking should you ever build a crop-dusting plane besides the " Cub " ( KZbin video: Extreme Crop Dusting 1957 ). An Ag ( something or other), when you fly it would do so as if you were dusting your yard with stall turns and such at each end of the pass. It would look good I think. Also, with other planes could you do " Immelmann's, Chandelles and Cuban 8s and square loops etc."?

Thanks for sharing all that you do! I bought the Carbon Cub S2 RTF, but have yet to fly it. Still working on the RF Simulator and waiting for better weather (Michigan). I am curious since I only have the DXS transmitter for now, will installing the flaps on the Cub really provide a noticeable benefit for a beginner pilot on this plane? Or, should I use the Cub as my beginner plane, and then when I upgrade to a better TX (DX8+) and get more planes (Turbo Timber Evo 1.5 and many more, lol) consider learning with and programming flaps then?

Can you explain more about balancing the prop? How did you know something was wrong? What causes it? Thanks
@BrianPhillipsRC4 жыл бұрын
Balancing the prop helps to make the motor run with greater efficiency. You can HEAR or FEEL that it's unbalanced, but kinda hard to explain in text... When I balance props, I usually just use clear TAPE. This is not the best way, but it'll do for this type of model, but for a more permanent solution, you would need to remove material from the heavy side, vs the light side, but this is a lot harder, and I just don't care to waste my time on certain planes. If it was a $10,000 ARF with a huge gas engine, I'd do it ;) BUT on a trainer where the prop might only last a few weeks, I'll probably just do the tape thing... I've shared on how to do it a few different times, but I'll elaborate here very briefly. Start by powering up the plane, and transmitter, and run the prop at or near full throttle while holding the plane in a safe way. Then feel or hear the noise... Now grab about 1/4 inch of clear tape and put it on the leading edge of one side of the prop...at the TIP, folding it about half and half, so it's not going to catch air... Now run up the motor. Was it better? Was it worse? If better...put another 1/4" on top of the last....better or worse...and repeat until it gets WORSE...then remove the LAST piece. Should take about 2-4 times and you'll have a MASSIVE improvement. It doesn't need to be perfect, but the more perfect you can get it, the better. Now that you know which side is heavy, and which side is light, you can start a more permanent solution, or just fly the plane. It's easy, but I've shown it about 20 times...so we don't show it every time ;) Good luck!

Have you thought about swapping the 18A ESC and putting in a 30A and then using the 9.5x7.5 prop and adapter, from the old PZ T-28? It really wakes the plane up. Pair it with a 2200mah 3s pack and you can still get 8 minutes of non scale, silly Cub flying. Good Times!

first off, i love your videos. Very informative! I have a question that you may, or may not, be able to answer. I have bought a carbon cub s2 and a dx6e. After updating the the Dx6e, an AUX2 became available on my servo set up. What would happen if i were to move the smart ESC over to the say channel 7 on the RX. Could i then use the the channel 5, or 6, on the rx for flaps and control the SAFE with another switch since it is not operating a servo? From what i understand, the new NX6 would allow this. I understand that the NX is a much nicer radio than the Dx6e. Might this be a way around the need for a 7+ channel TX? I can't seem to find anything about AUX2 on the internet, and nobody is talking about it in any forums. Any suggestions or help would be much appreciated.
