Hi Brian and the heartbeat of the show the Camera crew, As a 48yo newbie to the hobby. I received my S2 last week, didn't need to look at the instructions because i've watched this vid so much! Had my third flight with my instructor today and got to do my first take off!! which was awesome. RF trainer edition with the dongle has been a real help for confidence in the controls(my instructor wont let me use Beginner or intermediate mode he's old school lol) Just want to say thanks for videos you both do and you really have inspired me to go out and just do it!! Buy the plane find the club learn to fly awesome times ahead.

AWESOME! So glad we could encourage you along your way toward success! It's so cool to take that first flight, and non-fliers have no clue the level of excitement with flying RC planes. I love that it's NOT easy ;) If it were easy, anyone could do it, but the process necessary means that the nature of things sorts out those who aren't really into it - LOL ;) Congratulations, and so glad for your success! Now go find 3 more people and bring them along for the ride!!!

Once again, SUPER VIDEO. Here are some tricks I know of: 1. Use a MISTING spray bottle w/rubbing alcohol in it. Depending on how sticky a surface is mist one side or both and it will give you adjustment time when sticking something to something else. If only one side sprayed do it in the sticky side. When alcohol evaporates then there is a full hold of the item. I have done this so many times I can't tell you. 2. Put index finger in mouth to get wet all around. Then hold up in the air. EZ and accurate way to determine wind direction. 3. Get stick, dowel or something 1.5' long or more. Tie on a very narrow and light piece of ribbon or string on it. Hold it out and it will give you an idea if it is too windy or not to fly. This one below I have NOT tried. --- Spray or paint on a water-based acrylic coat(s) on Styrofoam parts. They claim this "shell" prevents dings and depressions in foam model airplanes. Tnx for the video info, again. It was great. I ordered this b4 I first saw this video (last Sunday) . I also bt alligator clip plug-in wires so I can charge from my car battery. I will be able to use this same charger (Spectrum S1200 DC) at the local school grounds I am going to fly at.

I bought this as my first plane about a month ago. I just started not using safe. It started as short moment where I would shut it off just to do loops and immediately turn it back on and now it’s fully flown with safe off. After about 20 flights with safe off, I can confidently say it is 400x more fun when you get to that level of experience. Only bummer is now I’m really sad I banged it up so much learning.

BEWARE! first time beginner buyers..... If you want this model, no matter who you buy from, then make VERY sure you order the "CARBON Cub S 2" and nothing else. I got rooked into buying the runt of the litter, the "SPORT Cub S2" It's only about half the size of the one shown here, suitable for flying in your bedroom. Beginners luck I guess but not what I thought I was getting, and to ad insult to injury, it costs MORE than the big brother. :o( Because I am a nice guy, I won't name the company, just beware.

Have watched a number of ones that are way over my head but still enjoy the process. You and your wife make a great team! You can do it, and will! It's not easy flying RC planes, but it's a LOT easier than it's ever been to learn to fly RC planes. I want to encourage you to keep at it!!! Buy some glue and don't be afraid to use it when you crash (you will...just like every other RC pilot including me), and fly till you're sick of the plane you have now. You will be ready for the next plane when you can switch out of SAFE some of the time without issue. When you're COMFORTABLE out of SAFE, you will know that you can fly another more complex or harder to fly plane. There's a few other really good "trainers" out there now and they too can help you bolster your experience as you "move through the ranks". We'll be here to help as you work to where you're aiming for, so please ask away and we'll try our best to help you along. Sod farm would be a GREAT place to fly this plane!!!

Thanks for the video. A couple of comments. The vortex generator strips are easy to put on if you peel the paper off of one side of the foam tape and then stick the tape strip in the groove. Then peel the other side of the paper off and stick the generators in. Also on the tail assembly, there is a 3rd screw (2x8mm) that screws in from the bottom into the rudder. Note to Horizon, I wish the screws were larger. I know everything is about saving weight, but you could double the weight of all of the screws and it wouldn't be noticeable.

I'm in the process of rebuilding my Carbon Cub S2 after a particularly bad crash (new pilot), and all the various views of the outside and inside of the plane are really helping me out. One of the wings looks like a cow (yes, a cow) may have partially put some weight on it, so I've ended up with what I guess you could call a negative dihedral. Hoping it doesn't end up mattering too much. I know that the entire plane can be rebuilt buying parts from Horizon Hobby, but putting it back together is fun :D
@BrianPhillipsRC2 жыл бұрын
Welcome to the addiction Bruce!!! Don't worry too much about anhedral you've picked up...when you're in the air, SAFE will help keep you level, but if it really bothers you, you can try to hang the plane with a large book, or books to weight it overnight, and see if that helps....but I wouldn't worry too much about it, as it'll fly okay. After crashes, there's a lot less pressure on you as a new pilot, so take advantage, and do learn something from every crash...soon enough you'll be an expert!!!

Hi Brian, I've come down with "airplane fever." I now own this plane and I want to thank you and your camera crew for this great video showing the complete build, setup and the flying for the Carbon. Due to your input, my build and setup was a success and I look forward to doing a maiden flight soon, just waiting on the weather. I'm also thinking about flaps and also viewed your video for adding flaps to the Carbon. I have both the stock radio and the NX8. If I go with flaps I probably will use the NX radio which will auto mix in the ruder with flaps. I think in your Flaps video, you found that although the stock radio worked, it lacked a ruder mix, so you had to compensate when deploying the flaps. I love your attention to detail, descriptions and videography. I also recently purchased the PA-18 1300 and received a nice discount using your channel, a real plus. Hey Brian....awesome videos as many have commented, so so helpful for me, an RC newbie as green as green can get... I sit here after a few days getting things together: Carbon Cub S2 w/flaps..✔ Extra Spektrum batteries (hard to find in stock)... ✔ S2200 charger (LOVE it)...✔ XBC100...✔ AMA and local club membership...✔ FAA cert and registration (why is it always that to do anything legal in aviation it has to be "except as..."???)✔ So the only thing I don't have is something you can't give me nor can I buy.... confidence... I am a former commercial pilot and have more than 1000 hours of dual given... but I can't seem to get the courage to get out there and just get that maiden under my belt!!! It's such a great plane right now... Anyway.... great job doing what you're doing.... and I don't mean your videos... I mean being a great dad and husband for your family! Keep it up...
@BrianPhillipsRC3 жыл бұрын
James... If you can fly a REAL plane, you can do this! Here's another way of looking at it... You can wait 2 months to put in your maiden, or 5 months, or a year... In 2 years, you'll be 22 month deep/ 19 months deep / 24 months deep...putting you behind where you could be if you had flown it TODAY. You just need time at the sticks. Get the plane in the air, and thank me later ;) Don't pick a bad day for weather, but beyond that, just get out there and do it. You'll be fine, and if you're not, and it crashes into 100 pieces (which it won't) you'll be well on your way to working through the hard lessons of flying RC. There are no shortcuts. There is no "right" time, except NOW. Just make sure there's decent weather "NOW". You can do it. You're heart will be pumping hard, like the day you first soloed, but you CAN and will do it. Confidence or not, you need to do it. Good luck (but you won't need it - you have SAFE - LOL)!

This is the plane I fly almost daily ( not in heavy wind) except most of my flights are in the green (rookie) mode and very slow compared to this so I can extend flight time per battery. Ok so now you know where I am coming from … I can’t believe how well you fly it in advanced mode and how precise the aerobatics are. I think my foam would crack in half if an experienced flyer tried this on mine. This is the RC analog of the old master playing the beat up old violin which then sells for a huge price at the auction. I think I need to save up for the simulator😊 Thanks for showing me what this plane is able to do!

Yes, I keep bending the landing gear back and have to remove it and bend it back. As for the low voltage test, one time, I ran out of voltage completely (I didn't know why the DX6 was beeping); it nosed down over concrete ground; sheered the entire nose and the tail. Glued them back on and flew back up the next day. I'm getting mine roughed up a lot as I learn to fly; landing is the hardest for me.

Never regreted the buy until now when I see the new version a month later. The small battery and no real way to see how much is left is the only things I'm wish it never had. My first crash was due I made the wrong input on the GPS and the fence got placed outside the landingstrip. :D

FANTASTIC video to say the least. I am going to purchase this in the next week or so and had planned to. I am just awaiting a return email from Horizon regarding ac/dc chargers. I want one that I can also charge batteries, from my car, at a local school ground. I'm glad I came across this video first as it really helps clear up some things. Interesting that the trans can take a rechargeable battery too. Thanks again, Rich

@@BrianPhillipsRC Thanks for the reply. Well, I am looking to go to my local school to fly it. I would need a DC charger so I can fly for awhile even if I buy 5 or so batteries fully charged when I arrive. I guess I would be able to connect this to my car battery. Any ideas for me? Your KZbin videos are great. I really enjoyed them. Thanks again, Rich

Another important thing the manual fails to mention that beginners should be aware of, if you install the flaps you will definitely want to use a flap/elevator mix. This plane suffers from some of the worst ballooning I've ever seen when flaps are deployed and needs some down elevator to counter. Once you get it set up well it makes slow flying quite a bit more fun.
@BrianPhillipsRC4 жыл бұрын
I talk about that for a good 10 minutes of the video...did you mis that part?

@@BrianPhillipsRC Sorry, to be honest I didn't watch the entire vid before I posted (still haven't) I just thought it was important info for newbies to know and I wasn't sure if it was addressed or not as it's a very, very long vid. I've been flying planes and helis for almost 25 years so I really don't need to watch these type of vids but I still enjoy them, usually when I'm lying in bed with my phone... just didn't have the time to finish this one yet. I bought the S+ to teach my daughters how to fly as they've both shown some interest and it's been great for that purpose. I pulled the GPS module out before I ever assembled it, as you said "I don't like it" and it's completely unnecessary.

Sadness. Hi Brian after watching this video several times and taking your advice (as well as from TheRcSaylors and Horizon Hobby) I purchased the Carbon Cub S2, having received it and assembled it, I took the plane to my local rc flying club. Having never flown before I approached the senior instructor and ask for some lessons.. He examined the plane and notice it had a gyro We don’t fly planes with gyros he said he will give a test flight, afterwards he said the plane was not suitable for lessons and refused to teach me. He and some other older members said I should by a bigger plane and transmitter and I had wasted my money. I was so excited going there and these guys left me disappointed
@BrianPhillipsRC3 жыл бұрын
Screw those guys!!! They are the PROBLEM, not you. I'm not into the club scene, and they can pound sand as far as I'm concerned, and this is one of the reasons. Let me preface my comments by saying, there are some very good clubs too, so maybe check around, but if you can't find another one to help get you up in the air, just do it yourself. Admittedly, it would be very helpful to have a more experienced pilot to help you start flying, but if you EVER get "help" like this - RUN - They aren't worth your time! Sorry for your bad experience. We're here to help you along. Don't let these FOOLS ruin it for you.

@BrianPhillipsRC2 жыл бұрын
I know of many people who are wheelchair bound that enjoy RC. This plane or the list of other beginner planes would be a great place to start. Keep in mind, depending on your level of mobility, you might need a hand to get the plane when you run it off the runway, or when the plane needs to be set on it's wheels, for example. It happens a lot when you're new, so just keep that in mind when planning, but as you get to being a better and better pilot, you'll need less help for when the plane ends up in a bush, or tree...since it will happen with reduced frequency. These are my most common beginner list. One other idea, if you would be interested, consider this simulator for practice before you get out on the tarmac. RC Sim bit.ly/3q5rSUF It's not cheap, but it will put in your hands, the same type of controller you'll be using, and this will help you get the necessary muscle memory built. It will help you shave many repairs off your future endeavor, but if you're like me, you'll want to fly and crash to do it FOR REAL...REAL has value, even if it's harder, more expensive, more tedious. Good luck!

Good advice. I was always told by the first person that taught me to fly, “radio controlled aircraft are attracted to telephone poles, barns, stationary objects, cars, other radio controlled aircraft, and pretty much anything that you would not think you would ever hit like a magnet to steel”. I believe it’s the same principle as why cops get hit all the time on the side of the road. When something other than your aircraft is attracting your attention then you’re going to plow it. It’s just what happens. It’s hard to follow the plane enough, it’s even harder to relate it to where stationary objects are on the ground. I take a good amount of time walking around and surveying the area where I’m going to fly before I ever even think about taking off.

The landing gear fairings have a tendency to come off. To make matters worse, Horizon doesn't sell these by themselves. You have to buy an entire new landing gear package just to get replacement fairings. Do yourself a favor and put a couple of dobs of hot glue on them where they clip into the landing strut wires and they'll stay put (but still able to pull them off if you need to relatively easily). As always, thanks for sharing. Steve

I picked up a used Carbon Cub S2 with flaps installed, the DSX, and a battery for $200. I also have a then brand new Aeroscout pusher. The best thing I did was buy Realflight and spent hours flying the models before taking them our IRL this weekend. I initially had Safe on, but fuk that, wanted to do barrel rolls, flips, and inverted flight :D Many landings with the 2 planes and 3 batteries...zero crashes in advanced mode, was great!! I was apprehensive about Realflight, but my experience was 1:1...although I had to fly the Tiber with flaps to get used to that. The Carbon Cub model doesn't have flaps, but it should :(
@kennethh24305 ай бұрын
The Aeroscout flew perfectly with the DSX all zeroed out...the Cub wanted to take a dive lol. Thankfully I easily trimmed it out. The original owner had taken a few spills and the tail are was ok, but not perfect. Elevator and Rudder were a bit 'off', same with the tail wheel, it was bad and didn't track on the ground well at all. I'm looking forward to flying it again after I get the tail section replaced, $35 for those parts, beat buying glue to attempt a repair :D
