Stiffening the barrel and changing the harmonics via shortening. Logic says higher velocity = higher elevation but stiffness and harmonics have a major vote on impact elevation.

Maybe the slight changes in the crown were enough to change POI? Awesome video. I like short barrels with a suppressor, so these types of tests are always interesting to me.

Very cool test! If I had to guess, I'd say your changes in impact point were more due to changes in barrel harmonics stemming from all the different barrel lengths you tested out instead of just changes in velocity. It just goes to show all of the different factors that go into where your bullet hits. You'd think that higher velocities would translate into a higher bullet impact, but this is a good example of how barrel stiffness affects all that too. I've seen a similar change (though not quite as large as what you observed) by adding a suppressor to the end of my rifle barrel. I'm guessing this is the sort of thing that's going on with this 22 Creedmoor pistol, but just on a larger scale. I also really enjoyed observing how your velocity changed with different barrel lengths too! After doing this test, what do you consider the "sweet spot" for the 22 Creedmoor where you're balancing speed and portability?
@Gahmaz0z8 ай бұрын
You're cutting weight off the end of the barrel. Kinda like when you take a suppressor off the end the POI goes up.

I would like to see a grouping test as you cut the barrel from 26in to 16inch at 300 yards using a Benchrest set up. The reason who needs a long barrel if it groups well with a shorter barrel.

The barrel whips a little when shot. It's just the harmonics, when the bullet exits the tip of the barrel it could be higher or lower in elevation....
@stephanelevesque61538 ай бұрын
the first question how this ammo group, u have only a one shot group, it's not really sure that the reallity, and if the group is tight, it's only ur harmonic that move ur grouping. but it's nice to see the speed lowering when u cut the barrel, always fun to see this in video not just on a balistic chart
@davideckert64995 ай бұрын
Really interesting that the impact was higher on the target even as the velocity decreased. Wonder if it would be worth trashing another barrel to do the test again at 2 or 300.

Will you be able to try this test with other bullets? 77tmk? 88eldm? I'd love to put together an 18 inch 22cm if i could get it light enough... i just had a 6mmCM put together, barreled action is only about 48oz... the next rifle i want to be under 42oz, and i think the 22cm would be just the ticket with its lower recoil for such a lightweight rifle. Even better if it could get 3150fps out of a 77TMK or 3000 out of an 88ELDM.

Thanks for doing all of this hard work. I have been out of the shooting game for a while. The 22 creedmoor has gained my interest for various personal reasons. I am retired army and cannot afford one of your rifles, so I was looking at putting a 22CM barrel on an old M70 action that has been sitting in a box for 7+ years. Your work is helping decide on the barrel length. Again, thank you!

@@Kaspar_Outdoors That would be enjoyable to watch. If the topography allows it, shoot from the prone position. Set it up with a Bipod and a small field bag under the pistol grip, and then just run it at hundred yard increments or 200 yard increments out to 1000 yards or maybe a tad further. A good solid bottom muzzle brake would help you spot your own shots around 400-500 yards. Kind of depends on your fundamentals, magnification, and the weight of your pistol.

At 100 yds can't really expect even a few hundred fps to add any measurable drop. Speed is the only valuable output expected from this test. Not POI @ 100.

Not a true test for what’s on paper without shooting with a Vice. So pay no mine to that. In general the gun doesn’t change accuracy much, considering it’s not a precise cut on the barrel and a crown done buy hand etc

NOT a stable rest at all, and no control of recoil. That needs to be resolved first because Mr. Litz has proven that the bullets are still in the barrel as recoil begins and the rifle is in motion which will open up your groups a lot. A 100 yard test is a waste of time. Should have been at 300, and you'd see the drops you were looking for. As you're chopping the barrel the harmonics will go in and out of node repeatedly as you reduce the length. The niche of the 22 Creedmoor is you can push heavy for caliber bullets (85 grains and above) at high MV allowing the bullets to work as intended at extended ranges. Shortening the barrel just takes away from that effort. Also you're shooting on a windy day. You need a dead calm day to get accurate results when testing.

Great feedback! This was a fun first attempt at a video like this and there are definitely things we will do differently next time. Thanks for the comment!
@raymondbuie52928 ай бұрын
Just an observation, you are losing weight for every inch you cut off. Therefore less firearm weight the recoil level would increase. This would make muzzle rise increase as your hand is pivot point. Similarly a very heavy bullet vs light bullet in say a 44 mag shoots high most often because slower bullet has longer elapsed time in the barrel combined with heavier recoil the muzzle is rising , you are in affect launching bullet at “x” amount of degrees higher by the time it leaves bore.

22 is so flat shooting at 100 yards... probably why there is not much height difference.

I ordered a "left handed" Vandal back in Feb with a 90 day lead time. Order #5659. Since then I have called once to make sure the order went thru properly a couple days after ordering then again 60 days in and again 90+ days in. Each time I was told that my gun would be checked on and I would be called back promptly. I have not received the first phone call, text, nothing-nada! This is a piss poor way to do business. I was fine with the 90 day wait BUT I am NOT ok with the complete nonexistence of customer service that you guys obviously lack!

Hacking the barrel off and hand cutting the crown is not going to give you accurate information on where the point t of impact is changing other than to tell you that a hack job will not give you accurate information. Just my $.02 worth.
