OCTOBER 2023 Revisited this vid, for some Viking inspiration. Will try some knife sheaths of Seax sytle, with junk blades to work out leather craft skills

loved the first suspension build. i made one from a deer skin, with fur, for my son's bowie knife, i made him. I used soft leather with a wood plate inside for stiffness. just brass and stainless steel. I like ur build for my gladius i am working on

Glad I refound this vid, I'm at the sheath stage of my build. I'm thinking of putting two toggles on the longer jesse so I can wear horizontally or with a drop as you have there.

some of these historical knives were likely to be made as functional display items for the high status

An historically accepted idea of the Seaxes /Viking style knifes, is that they where both a tool/weapon to be used, but also a status/decorative item. Hence why most of them are highly decorated. And if you wore a highly decorated item you don't want to hide it, so you will most likely hang it in front of you so all can see it.

Buen video,yo prefiero hacer la funda para portar el filo hacia abajo no hacia arriba yo lo portaría así no se por la mayoría lo usan hacia arriba el filo.

I believe the purpose of keeping the blade upwards is to protect the edge from damage, the Japanese practice the same habit.

I've heard that they used to vote by holding their blade up. This is pure speculation but I wonder if the method of wearing them edge up is so that they can quickly draw their weapon without accidentally cutting someone else? Drawing it edge up would make the edge face the wielder so there might be less chance of that happening (although, they would be more likely to cut theirself).

A leather smith told me the best way to carry a heavy knife is horizontal and blade up. I think the heavy knife and gravity cuts it's way out over time if it's blade or point down.

@@johntuffin6665 Interesting. You may have a point there if you'll pardon the pun lol. I was just guessing. Although, if that's the case, I wonder why some other, equally heavy blades weren't worn in the same way? Thanks for your input.

You should add some gambeson to your dark age armour selection. Very common cheap armour for even rich warriors back then.

Yeah, I've got a quilted tunic thing on that I wore for "Sons of Romans". I think of it as a gambeson, though the real ones probably had more padding.
