I am man enough to admit that when I first started watching this I rolled my eyes… Not another new caliber that fills no void. But as I listened everything you guys said made sense especially comparing it to other calibers. And the availability of ammo loaded with high BC bullets.... I have rolled my own for years to achieve what you guys are now offering to everyone, good job guys.

They only problem with Hornandy's new CARTRIDGES (6.5 creedmore, 6.5 & .300 PRC-PRECISION RIFLE CARTRIDGE) is that they seat there loaded ammo anywhere from 100 thousandths to 150 thousandths off the lands & groves - & that DOES NOT EQUATE to a PRECISION CARTRIDGE or RIFLE.......

Tight long throats can be more accurate because they allow the projectile to perfectly centrein the bore as it engages the rifling. Also, long throats tend to reduce pressure

I like that you guys tightened up the throat tolerances in this thing. The last two rifles I’ve built (300 RUM and 30 Nosler) I’ve purchased custom, match chamber reamers to get the throats .0004-.0005” bigger than the bullet diameter. Rifles tend to be inherently accurate done this way. Thanks for your innovation and properly developing these new cartridges.

What is so innovative about this cartridge? If they had offered it in .284 instead of .308, maybe. The 7mm Rem Mag can push higher BC bullets faster and with less recoil. So what if it has a belt? We reload. Match shooters aren't buying factory ammunition. If you reload, you can headspace off the shoulder, ignore the belt, and blow the .300 PRC out of the water with a cartridge released to the market in 1962. That doesn't sound like innovation to me.

Yes with the 300 PRC in 225 ELD-M or 212 ELD-X you have done everything right. To me it is the best 30 Mag available. But most hunters are hunting below 500m, so they might be better of with longer cases, sharp shoulders and max Case Volume/Energy (30 Nosler). Maybe they just stick with their old 300 Win Mag, because improvement is not important to them. Time will tell if people will change from 300 WinMag or how it competes against the 30 Nosler on the market. Greetings from a german weapon engineer.

@@carl-ok9gn this cartridge is definitely for hunters as well as long range shooters. This cartridge will out perform 30 nosler, 7mm rem mag, etc. This is the new hotness. I'm not one for new hyped products, the 6.5 Creedmoor I rolled my eyes at when it came out, then I paid attention to the ballistics, it is a great cartridge that does almost everything. This new 300 PRC, to me, is just a super beefed up, steroided out of its mind version of the Creedmoor. Simply fantastic. Just will need some massaging time to get cost and availability where it needs to be.

The one glaring weakness in the .30-caliber magnum lineup is best highlighted by examining the requirement around which Hornady designed its new .300 Precision Rifle Cartridge (PRC). The requirement came from the U.S. Special Operations Command (SOCOM) which asked the industry for a cartridge that would give its snipers a 50-percent hit probability on a man-sized target at 2,000 yards. The .300 PRC was developed by Hornady to be the answer. We’ve been at war for 17 years and the handful of times that kind of range was necessary, snipers would typically walk rounds in on target until they got lucky. As a former sniper, I would argue that the expectation is unrealistic and any fractional performance gains achieved in its pursuit are not going to be worth the effort or expense. That was my opinion before listening to a member of SOCOM involved in the requirement and hearing about the testing done for it. His response was not what I expected. After taking a brief stroll down memory lane and reminiscing how fighting the war used to be, he went on to explain what war looks like now. It used to be unlikely that U.S. forces would encounter an enemy that could shoot accurately past 600 yards, crew-served and indirect-fire weapons notwithstanding. Now, it is quite common to face near-peer elements in some parts of the world. The gentleman from SOCOM said that, on today’s battlefield, passing the forward line of troops meant you would most certainly get shot at. The only questions are: “What is going to get shot at you? And, how long it’ll take before it happens? The enemy has a lot of the same equipment we do, including night vision, thermal sights and even anti-tank missiles. Under these conditions, SOCOM feels the best thing we can offer to protect our servicemen is to take a step back and put some distance between our enemy and us. No nation on earth produces rifleman like America. We teach our children to shoot and many, like myself, learn from our fathers at a young age. There is no shortage of rifle competitions where neophytes and seasoned veterans alike can hone their skills. To add, we have a firearms industry that’s home to a handful of brilliant minds that know how to design and manufacture the tools necessary for extreme performance. Taking advantage of that knowledge base is a marvelous strategic idea, and it makes me want to stand at attention just thinking about it. Like any great idea, the application is always more difficult than coming up with the concept. The first cartridges to be evaluated were the big boys including .50 BMG, .416 Barrett, as well as the .375 and .408 CheyTac. The issues with those cartridges were that the host guns are simply huge and the ammunition is large and heavy. No sniper moves very far or very fast on the battlefield with an oversized rifle and enough ammo to feed it. P” is for Precision About this time, Hornady stepped forward with a project they had been working on for a while. The solution they presented, given the parameters outlined by SOCOM, was the .300 PRC, which is similar to other .30-caliber wildcats like Dave Tooley’s .30 Boo Boo, the .300 Accuracy International (AI) and the .30-375 Ruger. There’s a reason the .300 PRC is very similar to those cartridges. Everyone was looking for a solution to the same problem and smart guys from different companies arrived at nearly the same conclusion. For background, Tooley is a champion benchrest shooter who frequently competes out to 1,000 yards. Accuracy International developed their .300 AI cartridge in 2009 when SOCOM had some aggressive accuracy requirements of 1,500 meters for a long-range, sniper-rifle solicitation. AI didn’t think any of the cartridges then fielded could do what SOCOM wanted, so they pursued their own. While the dimensions of these cartridges are all pretty similar, the throat length and throat diameter of the .300 PRC are tighter than any of the wildcats. This means you can safely chamber and fire .300 PRC ammunition in most .30-375 wildcats. It’s worth noting that the .300 PRC is a necked-down .375 Ruger, its parent case.

Again, why .308? According to Hornady's own published numbers, Hornady only manufactures one .308 caliber bullet with a higher BC than the equivalent .284 caliber offering. G7 BCs from Hornady's website: Highest BC Eld-X offering- .284 cal 175 gr .347 .308 cal 212 gr .334 Highest BC Eld-M offering- .284 cal 180 gr .401 .308 cal 225 gr .391 Highest BC A Tip Match offering- .284 cal 190 gr .422 .308 cal 250 gr .442 The 250 gr ATip is the only bullet Hornady offers for the .300 PRC that can't be beaten by the 7mm Rem Mag, a cartridge that came out in 1962. Hornady would have been better off giving us a .284 PRC based off the same case, as it can drive higher BC bullets faster and with less recoil than the .300 PRC. Now we have to go through Gunwerks to get the 7mm LRM that Hornady should have introduced, but didn't.

I want better B.C. bullet options for the 35 Whelen and the 250 Savage and I want them to be priced in factory loads so that I can afford to shoot them at matches and be competitive with the Creedmoors and Lapuas on the range, and for game hunting. FACT: The US Army recently made a $5M purchase of Barrett MRAD sniper rifles CHAMBERED in yep, 300 PRC. So if it's good enough to attract the Army's attention it should be a decent cartridge. *I know it will easily accommodate a 230 gr. Berger Hybrid bullet where my .300 Win mag requires crushing the powder load to do the same thing and remain within the SAAMI C.O.A.L.. NOT good B/C compressing loads makes pressure spikes. PLUS the 300 PRC can be headspace off the shoulder and not the "magnum belt" as with teh .300 Win mag. This is good B/C belts have varying thicknesses brand-to-brand resulting in varied head spacing. NOT good for maximum accuracy.

Definitely some key elements the 300 PRC is looking to address that aren't being addressed in the common .30-30 Win, .308 Win, .30-06 Spg, .300 WM, .30-378 WBY, 30 Nosler, .300 RUM. People get angry about stuff like this. What's the beef? Hornady is an ammunition manufacturer looking for solutions, not content to sit around on its butt cranking out older designs (as great as they are, as long as they'll be around) without innovating, creating movement, meeting niche, advancing the sport.

I'm looking into a 300 PRC because I want a long range target rifle that will get to 2k off the shelf. I want a .300 that will fit the bill for hunting out to 5-600 yards and play a little over a mile on the weekends. I love shooting, hunting, and am starting to reload but I'm not ready to get custom rifles built. As of now my Ruger American Predator 6.5CM in a Magpul hunter stock with a Timney trigger and Harris bipod can produce great groups with factory Hornady 147 ELD-M and 143 ELD-X. My first 5 shot cold bore group this past weekend was 2.32" at 646 yards (0.34 MOA) with 143 ELD-X. You cant ask for better performance in an sub $1000 rifle/chassis. The only reason to develop a hunting load for that rifle is to ensure quality control. But it's never going to be an ELR target or LR hunting rig. Its a little light in the loafers for those purposes. I think the 6.5 PRC was a stupid venture by Hornady. It's an overbored barrel burner that laser beams the bullet. A situation usually reserved for predator rifles. What audience is it targeting? Only the richest and most elite target shooters, or dumbasses that only put 20 rounds a year through their "long range" hunting rifle (unfortunately I've met more than a few). LR hunters want larger heavier calibers for more knockdown and energy transfer. Not many people think of the 6.5 as the IDEAL elk caliber, and I'd agree, it's adequate at best. Target shooters will need to re-barrel every 1000 rounds or less. 6.8 Western will be a flop. Its a good cartridge but Winchester and Browning royally jacked up the marketing. Just like Remington did with the .280, which is in every way a better cartridge than .270Win. They finally commercialized a .270 that fixed the all the old problems like twist rate that restricted it from using high BC bullets in factory chamberings. Americans LOVE LOVE LOVE the .270! Everybody hunts with it, and if you don't, you still don't dare bad mouth the venerable .270. It's like your grandfather. Outdated in his ways, but still a man you respect. And instead of thinking of a cool name that attaches that amazingly successful cartridge's history, they call it a 6.8... STUPID!! Should have been .270 Improved, .270 Precision. Even calling it .270 WESTERN would let you immediately know this is a modernized .270. IF Hornady had designed a 7mm PRC that outperformed 7mm Rem Mag because of the beltless/efficient case design and optimized the chamber and twist rate for high BC pills, I bet a lot more ears would have perked up from the crossover hunter/target enthusiast community like me who wants factory ammo that is "good enough" to paly with in my limited free time. Everyone knows .284 pills are the right medicine for killing elk, even at a little longer range. You would be getting approximately twice the barrel life of the 6.5PRC, best in class BCs like the already amazing 7 Rem Mag, and less recoil. For now I'll settle for the 300 PRC and one of the few rifle options that come in at $1000-2000 and get me 1 mile off the shelf. 300WM will never go away, just like .308Win. But 6.5CM has really left .308 in the dust in the last few years and I don't think that race is anywhere even close to over. I believe in 5-10 years we'll be saying the same thing for 300WM and 300PRC. And a few years later, we'll be saying the same thing about the 7mm Rem Mag and the 7 PRC (that I just made up haha). 300PRC does everything 300WM CAN already do for hunting, but can also shoot borderline ELR distances in factory condition. Why not? It's a .30 cal magnum creedmore you say? HMMM.. My $500 Ruger 6.5CM shoots high BC factory hunting ammo sub 1/4 MOA at over 600 yards!!! My 300 PRC will do that too you say? Shut up and take my money Hornady!! And for the love of all things holy, please make a flat shooting and modernized 7 PRC that wont melt the barrel in 3 shots while you're at it. Ya'll stay safe out there and enjoy yourself. Hope someone enjoyed my rant. If at least one of you did, it was all worth it haha

Lastly is it just me or does that barrel look extraordinarily long?! Haha I feel this round is specifically a target/range cartridge because generally people don’t take shots past 1000 maybe 1200 and those who do are either stupid or VERY good shots. And past that, this cartridge seems like t would start to out preform the other 300s, otherwise inside of 1000 it would be pretty much just another 300 mag

30-378 Weatherby Magnum is still better even though it’s BC is a little less-has more velocity, energy, trajectory, and less wind drift out to 2,000 yards. But I’m sticking with 7mm Rem. Mag. Sorry, but it’s hard to beat the ballistics at that price. 300 PRC just barely out performs 7mm Rem. Mag. Putting all that aside, it’s who’s behind the rifle that makes the difference. One of the record kill shots in history was made in the War Between the States by a Confederate sniper at 1,390 yards with a .451 Whitworth rifle which had a 1-20” twist.

.260 would only be popular due to the parent case being the .308. It's not as optimal in case design as the 6.5x55 which has been around a lot longer, but as a lot of metric things, wasn't received or understood in the USA. Also has a larger diameter head and longer case than the short-action .308 based stuff, so it runs a longer action. Creedmoor was designed to work within common constraints. Remington could have had a lot of things more popular but the company has suffered from STUPID marketing moves over the years.

I don’t exactly understand why a “heavy for caliber” load makes this cartridge better than a Win Mag or Ultra Mag. They are trying to reinvent the wheel to me. Especially since they’re trying to appeal to match shooters who would probably load their own anyway or already have a different caliber they like.

I have a 300 WM necked down to a 7mm snd it is great! BUT IT IS A BARREL BURNER. Getting about 7-800 accurate rounds down the tube. What would be the “EXPECTED” accurate round count before the barrel was shot out? 1300? 1500? 2000? I know that there are a lot of factors that go into it, but shooting the 225 Hornady bullets out of a 28-30 in barrel at say 2900 fps, what should I expect? Thanks

One thing I don't like about Hornady: Their new phone system. Just a few years ago when you called them it felt like a mom and pop but with big professional products and solutions. But I even called once just to show a customer how cool it was. Now when you call it's just the same boring corporate sound. (tears). Still love the products and company, but I miss the quirky, comfortable welcoming when I call.

Question? If you want to do your own 300 PRC reloading, it sounds like you would full length case size rather than just neck sizing the case? In other words, just reload to factory spec? My overall thought with this question is geared towards maybe saving some dollars by loading my own.

This cartridge makes sense to me but it’s still not mu cuppa tea simply because ; 1 I am a hunter not a target shooter. 2 l have never shot a deer or anything else past 300 yds. 3 l shoot a .300 for the muzzle energy only. 4 l use nothing but the old Hornady 180 grn. Interlock flat base. Accurate flat shooting smashes through both frt. shoulders tearing up everything inside and causing a good blood trail which l have never had to follow very far if at all. Any life left in it another one to the head whether it’a nice rack or not l don’t care. You can’t eat the horns. Same rifle same scope some 40 yrs now. Here's a novel idea for the naysayers. Just don't buy one, if you think it's not worth it to you. All the pissin'-n-moanin' about a new cartridge, trashing the manufacturer for introducing it, and decrying the unavailability of existing factory ammo cartridges, is a bit bewildering and kinda boring ta boot. "Stick with..." (insert your favorite cartridge here) and all will be right with the world. As for me, it's another .30 caliber magnum rifle I intend to add to my collection.

@@mikelewis5650 what's there to say. Weatherby's standard freebore is 3/4"which does nothing for their accuracy and if you took the freebore away you'd be over pressuring. in the last over 20 years of being a Smith i have pulled off more Weatherby barrels and replaced with non Weatherby calibers than i have chambered them. i own well over 100 chamber reamers and the .300 and 7mm and .270 and .257 Weatherby reamers never get used. their throat life is very short the report and recoil and powder consumption is ridiculous and the ammo is higher than the balls on a giraffe. they enjoyed a niche market in the 50s and 60s and 70s. the new trend is more efficient calibers with, shorter cases, steeper shoulders, longer necks and no belts, faster twists, higher BC bullets and shorter actioned rifles. no one i know of in the long range game is using one, that includes ELR and King of 2 mile any 1 mile shooters i know and F-Class and LR benchrest i'm not up on PRS we don't have that here. but i doubt none of them are using one either since they are using mag fed rifles and they require extreme accuracy and barrel life is nill. i can't think of one Govt. agency or Military branch or Police dept using them either. that's it.

That is what I am saying. I am on here trying to find comparisons to the 300 weatherby. I saw this being advertised on facebook and I mentioned that the article didn't have anything that says it's better than a 300 weatherby and Norma makes an off the shelf box of loads that outdo what the article says. Faster muzzle speed and the same factors for deviations and adjustments. And I can't find anything that acknowledges the 300 weatherby. Obviously it will out perform the 300 win mag, it is a bigger casing. But let's compare apples to apples.

That's why I dont depend on these ammo company's. They always changing and disconnecting different ammo. I buy my own bullets, powder and the rest of the things I need. I use to buy ammo and ran into these problem. These guys know alot of stuff but most of the bullets I have tried haven't came close to Sierra Berger and Barnes. They are trying to steer the consumer away from loading there own ammo. I can guarantee that my 300 win mag 300 rum 308 warbird will out shoot anything they have. They do have alot of solid points but then again dont always depend on what they say and the stores that sell ammo that they are going to have what u need from year to year. Then a person has to start all over again on something they have new. Does anybody remember when all the short mags came out. It was like slice bread wasn't as good as these new short mags. Just a new fad out to sell a new product. Stay with the old calibers because they will always be there.

I’ve seen load data on this and depending on projectile, a number of these bullets in handloads are supersonic out to about 1950-2000yds. At about 1950 yds it has the same energy as my 45acp at the muzzle with a decent long solid copper ELR bullet. The throat diameter design on this is excellent. My biggest gripe is lack of barrel selection. I want to see Remington, Savage, Howa, and Ruger barrels.

Big one? No belt. I hate loading belted magnums as my .300 Win the tend to bulge above the belt and then I have to use a special Collett die to reshape this. This has no belt, unlike the .300 Win and Wby. A little faster than the Win, a little slower than the Wby. Designed for long bullets. My biggest issue loading my .300 was to shoot a 200 grain LRX or 212 ELD-X I was shooting a compressed load at anything above 75 grains. I hunt so they have to be able to feed from a magazine. This solves that by having the magazine already spec'd long.

The 375 Ruger was indeed used as a starting point for the 300 PRC, however, the chamber and cartridge for the 300 PRC were designed concurrently. We optimized the chamber geometry to create an inherently accurate cartridge that is very forgiving with all bullets. In summary, we specifically designed the chamber for an appropriate amount of throat length for a cartridge that bears the word “precision” in its name.

Seriously though for the guy that's just wanting to by ammo, and go shoot I really like the idea of the 300 prc, but for a 12+ or - pound gun my 30-06 with a 175, or a 220+ gr will do just about anything a 30 cal should do... I think of it as a 1000 yard gun, and after that I think a big heavy hitting cartridge is more appropriate...
