Sometime around the early 1970s when I was a kid, I found red boxes of Hornady Frontier Cartridges in .30-30 piled on the counter at a local store that had grocery, fishing and hunting stuff. The price was much cheaper than Remington and Winchester. Told my Dad about the fantastic bargain. "Never heard of them." was his reply. He wouldn't buy any for me to shoot. Didnt buy anything else either. He was so tight on ammo it was unreal.... Hard to believe this huge powerhouse company was fairly unknown by non reloaders 50 years ago and had already been in business two decades by the early 1970s. They can't be overlooked or missed now.

Hornady make good bullets....not excellent but appropriate for their price point. My main complaint is their range of bullets for the 7.62X54R, 7.65X53mm Arg. or Belgium, 7.7 Japanese and .303 British. Their bullets are nominally listed as either .312" or .311" but generally run a thou to a thou and a half smaller with a subsequent reduction in accuracy. I stick to SMKs or LeHigh for those calibers.

What's sad is because they make this much ammo per day and yet they are stilling jacking the prices up!
@carfvallrightsreservedwith6649 Жыл бұрын
The raw materials are costing them more because a lot of it is going to military production and exported to Ukraine/Isreal and whi knows where else. Larger munitions is in the mix too. If you haven't been following the industry several of the European manufacturers have canceled orders to the U.S.. They're stocking up their own country's military requirements. That should indicate to one that the world is in a precarious place. For two months all the YT channels have been warning of large price increases are coming in 2024.

@chipsterb4946 Жыл бұрын
I’d never thought about the counter-cyclical aspects of ammunition and component manufacturing. Being able to buy CNC machines for 10 cents on the dollar or hire 35 qualified people all at once certainly makes expansion less expensive. However, you need the quality control and training systems in place to take advantage of those opportunities. Most of all, you need the corporate culture to sustain quality and innovation. Now would you *please* start making 8.6 Blackout brass?
@ljprep6250 Жыл бұрын

Very interesting as I'm a reloader. My little bedroom operation sure doesn't compare to Hornady's. I always thought melted lead was poured into the copper jacket. Interesting that it is solid lead that is pressed in. I still would like to know how they get lead inside of a full encasement jacket.
@johnnorman7708 Жыл бұрын
That melted lead core idea was Vernon Speer's Hot Cor bullet. Probably part of the reason he and Joyce Hornady dissolved the partnership and Speer went to Idaho to start Speer bullets. Bullets do have several variations in design and more than a few methods of manufacturing.

Ahhh .. His Grandfather knew how the money changers operate! He was wise to their methods of taking over businesses, so he diversified the company into multiple entities. There’s an invaluable book that was written in 1890 called “Great Red Dragon - London Money Power” that should be required reading for every high school student in the World. Hornady was no doubt aware of Henry Ford’s stark words as well, relating to the unscrupulous parasites. People in modern times have long since been lulled to sleep, and Ford’s words have unfortunately been forgotten. Read the book! I guess the tour is one way Hornady advertises their ability to be a major government contractor to compete with Federal and Winchester. However due to their growing production capacity, they can never be able to become the leader in manufacturing anything that could be as precise as smaller manufacturers. The only upside about their growth is their bullets being more readily available and being more affordable.
