I think you guys actually low key one-upped most every other alternate AR15 cartridge. I would not compare it to a 300 BLK because that was specifically made for short barrels, close ranges, and subsonics, but I think the ARC wins for any other AR15 purpose all things considered. Great stuff!

I really appreciate the honest conversation here guys. Saying people don’t have to buy the ARC and they can continue shooting their own cartridge is what most people are missing. I really like my ARC and it does meet advertised velocity with consistent impacts to 800 yards.

you make a great point around 18:00 on 243 win and weight. Lower weight and higher velocity means more energy at closer range, but it's not a cartridge designed for close ranges, and terminal ballistics change over wide speed envelopes. Better to have similarities in impact velocity over a wide range of distances.

@tyler61474 жыл бұрын
In general for over 1000 yards for a target cartridge the 6 ARC will win 95% of the time. With the 6 ARC you can hit (very) extended ranges whereas other cartridges like the Grendel can only go that far by using specialty designed solid copper bullets that currently run $1.25 per projectile (not loaded ammo) for the cheap stuff (that may or may not feed in a magazine). 1,400 to 1,600 are reasonable expectations for the 6ARC (with bullets that cost just over .30 cents each), and of course depending on configuration and exact bullet choice. Say for example if you use Sierra's 110 grain bullet and you only get 2600 fps out of it, the transition from super to subsonic happens between 1,400 and 1,500 yards. If you can eek out 2,700 fps with that bullet you have a potential 1600 yard gun. For me I am not hunting or doing anything like that. My primary purpose is exactly for long distances and to have an affordable way to scratch that itch. A cost effective way to shoot more ELR is my primary objective. I can get into that game for basically the cost of an upper (and of course the optic). I get a lot more bang for a lot less buck.
@ravissary794 жыл бұрын
to add to what Tyler is saying, Grendel, nor arc, aren't viable to hunt that far out. Neither is 308, lots of cartridges. long barrel hunting limit is likely around 500-600 yards. Carbine limit is around 400. But for most people that's way more than you need.

VS. 224 Valkyrie....Why switch? Why not switch? A big question from the standpoint of an 07FFL who sank a bunch of money into the 224V for barrels and builds; only to see it flop with lackluster reception at first after the ammo debacles. From a ballistics standpoint I can definitely see the advantage when running numbers against data I've collected in my own testing of the 224V across multiple barrels and loads. To be frank, I was extremely excited for the 224V, but at the same time was thinking in the back of my head, "...why the heck didn't Hornady or someone do this with a 6mm?" *facepalm in 224V* Should have waited I guess; very excited to get hands-on and do some testing!

they have a video on this specifically. IMHO, the 6mm is just better. It can carry more weight easier, and still hit the ranges required. And the valk wasn't really viable for hunting, the Grendel is a great hunter, but is a bit slow. The 6 splits the difference and has most of the benefits of both for most game and for target shooting. It trails the Grendel on larger medium game.

Given that the 6.5 Grendel can't hack 140's, and the 140 class bullets are what makes the 6.5's shine, I've figured that 6mm was the sweet spot for the AR15. Not wanting to deal with supply issues has kept me from trying one of the existing wildcats (and some weren't optimized for 100+ gr target bullets anyways). The 6mm ARC has been optimized for the best available bullets, and won't have the wildcat hassles, so I think it's worth a go. I would've preferred it to be 6.8 SPC based, but that's not a deal breaker.

One of the main reasons we have the 6.5 PRC is because there was a great wildcat cartridge called the 6.5x284. There's very little support for 6.5x284 because there's a version from Lapua, Norma, and winchester, and none of them were saami certified. I'm glad that Hornady went through the process to get the 6mm Grendel saami certified as the 6 ARC. I wish they would have done it a few years ago before I bought a 6 Predator barrel. @tyler61474 жыл бұрын
That will be more of a financial question for the ammo manufacturers rather than a technical one. If a ton of people want to shoot screaming fast loads at gophers then manufacturers will make ammo for that purpose. To me the sweet spot for the ARC is that the longer higher BC bullets extend the range of the cartridge far beyond what a regular AR is capable of.

For the first 7 or 8 years of the life of the Grendel it was a proprietary round where Alexander Arms held all the rights to it. Anyone wanting to make anything had to go to AA to see if they could work out a deal. @@michaelsurratt673 it was supposed to come out this year's shotshow. SAAMI approval and testing plus covid seems to be putting it all on delay. Personally I wonder if they're having trouble standardizing a chamber. They're long loading .338 bullets so you can use the longest heaviest high BC subs, trouble is, if you long load the 185s and 200s thar already exists, the ogive is so far out that it won't hit the lands in the same place as a long high BC sub. That means either the subs have to jump or the supers can't fit. And that's because the appeal of the round is that high BC 338 bullets are common, plentiful and effective... but if the ogive has dramatically different shapes from length to length (Federal bullets vs Lapua bullets) and since this is supposed to be accurate with subs at long ranges (600 BC 300 gr bullets hold onto energy REALLY well at long ranges) but that potential for great accuracy is dusted if the chamber us meant for a blunder 338 Federal bullet shape. All this speculative ramble is to say that it's possible that 2 things are holding all this up: perfecting an accurate chamber that works for subs and supers, and Hornady might be working on a simple cheap versatile polymer tip 185 or 200 grain LONG BC 338 bullet... think a 120 gr 6.5mm lapua scenar profile but scaled up. But that means the reload value of the cartridge might go down if you can't use 338 Fed bullets loaded long. Just thinking out loud.

And as far as the 6.5 grendel mags i like the 6.8 spc mags myself asc tend to be the best but the 6.5 grendel asc mags work well too i just had better luck with the 6.8 mags myself. I just wish someone would make a polymer mag for the grendel and arc btw thats the 15rd mags and the 25rd mags im using.

Ok, staff. Ballistic tables, comparisons, reload data, etc. Without this, your rollout is a nonstarter.
@gsxr11894 жыл бұрын
Hornady has a very basic ballistic calculator on their website but if you're not an experienced enough shooter to generate your own exterior ballistics data then you're just a beginner so chill the fuck out and learn. They can't generate generic ballistic carts anyway atmospherics are going to be different and wildly vary the data but you'd know that if you had some experience.

Love these round table conversations of a new cartridge. I'm not a 6mm fan , , but , , this one has my full attention. Will be putting one together in an AR platform as soon as components are at a more reasonable price, along with reloading supplies and data. Americans are enamored with the 3000 fps mark. That was because of the Savage Firearm folks and the 250/3000 cartridge, (1915 with an 87 grain bullet). Today, it still is a non-necessity in the real world. So far, it seems that the true hunting / long range round is between 2500 to 2800 fps with the correct components to make it happen more folks owned and utilized a chronograph, their bragging rights would not be as prevalent, (my opinion). Makes me wonder why the Winchester 30-30 is still around, (grin). Keeps harvesting deer, even today, ( 1895 in the Winchester 1894). Don't see a 3000 fps with this round. Other than that, I'll be an upcoming customer of this cartridge. Be more than happy to buy some Hornady dies and start digging in to the reloading process, and 'my' development of this cartridge. Joel

I'm ready for a Critical Defense offering! I have fallen in love with my 18", all I have to do is swap optics and I go from a 6-24x45mm FFP for as long a shot as I want to take to bedroom protection gun with my holographic, now I want something I can use in my house with confidence in controlled penetration

This is really cool to see you answering real, relevant questions. This presentation was excellent. I do have a thought- Grendel is popular also because Wolf steel case is cheap. Will Hornady produce steel match ammo to compete?

Dear haters, 6mmARC is here because SOCOM wanted it. They ordered AR-15s chambered in 6mmARC for the DMR role and Barrett delivered them two months ago. A SCAR-17 with 180 rounds of .308 weighs 12-17 pounds more than an M4 and apparently that’s a big deal in the mountains of Afghanistan. Hornady was smart enough to get the SAAMI approval and commercialize it.

Slightly more energy at the muzzle (e=1/2*m*v^2-- velocity being squared gives more energy to lighter faster bullets) and it maintains it better (higher BC bullets).
@gsxr11894 жыл бұрын
Because it has a higher BC and more velocity. The weight of the projectile is already factored into the BC. Meaning that if you took a 123gr 6.5 Grendel and 108gr 6mmARC and for the sake of this example they had the same exact muzzle velocity and the exact same BC both would be moving the exact same velocities at 100, 200, 300, 400.....etc they would have identical velocities at every distance they would also have the exact same wind drift and drop at every range and go subsonic at the exact same distance because again bullet weight is already factored into BC as a part of the calculation that determines BC. Thus comparing a lighter bullet with more velocity which also has an equal or higher BC than a heavier bullet with less velocity the lighter bullet will be faster at every distance downrange the mass of the heavier will never allow to catch up in any way. However 6mmARC has a slightly higher BC than 6.5 Grendel and it has 170 fps more velocity. What that means is that since 6mmARC is faster it spends less time traveling to target which means less time exposed to the wind and thus less wind drift and since it's travelling faster than 6.5 Grendel it will have less drop as well and with the extra speed it will give more supersonic range. The 6mmARC also has nearly identical muzzle energy as well but with the slightly higher BC it begin to slowly pull away from 6.5 Grendel in the energy department immediately and continue to so all the way downrange.

@phillhuddleston94454 жыл бұрын
They are not a gun manufacturer though, they are doing well at what they already do, right now there are a lot of ar-platform gun manufacturers so competition is very high that is why prices are very reasonable overall.

WHY ? The Hornady Black 105 grain factory load crosses over my chrono at 10 feet at 2630 FPS or more. YET ... ALL nine of the listed powders in your released load data for the 105 grain BTHP out of an 18” barrel show MAX charges yielding less than 2600 FPS AND 7 of 9 of these powders are less than 2500 FPS WHERE Did the velocity go ? I don’t buy that I have a “fast” barrel because a number of other shooter have posted the very same velocity out of their 18” barrels from a variety of gun makers .... SO Who screwed up ? Why is the factory load 130 + FPS faster than ALL reloading powders tested and published ? Y’all know this is making the 6-ARC look slow.........

Might be an odd question: How does the 6mm Arc compare to the Chinese 5.8x42 round? I rarely hear about the Chinese round, though I think that is because it isn't sold much if anywhere outside of China.
@jeremyschmidt44494 жыл бұрын
Maybe Hornady should make 103 and 108 gr bullets for the 6.5 grendel. Federal makes a 90gr with claims of 3000fps. Correct me if I'm wrong, but i would think a same weight bullet out of the grendel and the arc would be splitting hairs.
@tyler61474 жыл бұрын
It would be massively different actually. A 103 and 108 grain in 6.5 would require a fatter (obviously) and shorter bullet and that would result in a much reduced BC. There ain't no such thing as a free lunch. The only way to get to the weights you are talking about would be to buy and shoot extremely expensive solid copper CNC machined bullets and even then achieving the goal would be really hard if not impossible to get a high BC with the parameters you mentioned.
@gsxr11894 жыл бұрын
6.5 Grendel can match either the velocity or almost match the BC of 6mmARC but it cannot do both simultaneously and that's what needs to happen in order to match the performance.

Just get the ammo out there and we’ll shoot the shit out of it. I’m too lazy to reload and I love long range target shooting. All jokes aside, I built a 6.5 Grendel and absolutely love it. Im ready for the 6mmArc rabbit hole. I love in Commiefornia but ironically I have lots of options in terms of ranges to shoot this caliber.
