It’s nice to watch a model railway running without whistles blowing ,wheel clanking sounds…….its progress I understand…but I still like to sit and be transported back …. Lovely in black aswell…..great job Bill.

Thrilled to see the newly landscaped area around the tunnel. It’s beginning to look really good. I had this model way back in the day it was okay. I replaced it with a new Bachman9F which I thought was far better. I understand Hornby have released a new one as well. Although not a fan of large locomotives, the 9F was to me the ultimate achievement in British Railways engineering and the fact that so many have survived is a tribute to that . That and the fact that they were almost brand-new when they were scrapped of course, such a tragedy.

One suggestion Bill. I would really enjoy a video where you go over the various tools, oils, cleaners, etc... that you prefer. Kind of an overview of the essentials for the workshop. Another great one, The 9Fs are a favorite loco type for me. Cheers, Felix

Hi Bill. Great start to 2025! TMC has Hornby's 9F Black Prince for sale at £149.99. I bought one, and it's fabulous.

its a pleasure to watch you giving a 'new' lease of life to some middle aged locos, I am a bit worried about the latest loco's that they are to complex for the average model train enthusiasts to attempt a repair on love your videos

Happy New Year to you Bill. Great to see another loco repaired by you. Handy tip for the riveting thanks. You also mentioned cleaning the traction wheels and I wondered what you cleaned them with? Many thanks for all the tips through out the year and onwards. Best wishes for 2025

Nice one Bill . Love these old 9Fs . One is from 1974 and has the permanent connection between loco and tender . I’ve just been running it celebrating its 50th Birthday ! Layout looking good . Happy New Year !

Another one fixed! I do like the 9F’s. When Birkenhead (8H) shed was open, there were over fifty based there! What a sight and sound they must have been, working oil trains from Stanlow Refinery and the iron ore trains from Bidston Dock to John Summers Steelworks at Shotton. Some of them only saw five years service before going for scrap! Criminal, really. I’ll shut up now. Luckily we still have a few preserved ones to enjoy. Happy New Year, Bill!

Great repair. Nice to see another locomotive live again. My black 5 of a similar era had valve gear that needed a new rivet. I don't think the front bogie wheel is correct I suspect it came from the 3mt tank, not that it matters.

I have three of these Hornby 9f's and they have given me a few problems in the past but look great on the track. Early ones suffered with the dreaded mazak rot in the wheels and are not available as spares, although you can a get the later type and convert them. Nice repair Bill.

When I was building kit locos rather than rivet the valve gear, I used brass deck pins for model ships. I think I got them and whole range of brass washers from Eileens Emporium. Just had to remember to fit bits of paper, from postits, as an insulator to stop the solder from travelling and freezing the whole thing up.

Hi Bill , Happy. New year to you Yet another successful repair and service under your belt !! In your recent video featuring your class 153 , you mentioned you had seen photos of one hauling " coaches " ??? ...can you tell me the link to where you saw this please 🙏 as all I can find on the Web, are images of them coupled to other powered units !! Thanks Bill , here's wishing you all the best for 2025 ..😊
@oobill13 күн бұрын
I only sort of glanced at some pics of 153s and thought they were attached to coaches from the pics I saw. But they were actually attached to 156s. So I'm now on the hunt for a 156 in Saltire livery. They don't come cheap when they do come up for sale.

Hi Bill. I wonder if the wobble is the start of mazak rot. I had to replace 2 9F chassis due to this reason. Can you tell me what the Hornby number is for the pinion gear is. i have looked and there appears to be more than one brass one. Nice to see the layout coming along. It will not be long before it is finished by the looks of it. That is if they can ever be considered finished. There is always some little thing that you think about tweaking at some point. Here is wishing you a very happy new year.
@oobill13 күн бұрын
I couldn't see any evidence of rot in the chassis. Pretty sure the wobble is due to the main drive wheel axles not being centered correctly. Gear is S2290 or S4553 or X8440. I mistaningly say I used New Modellers Shop for them but it was Hornby Triang Spare Parts.

My old 9F's loco wheels lock up on left hand curves - can't find anything wrong with the valve gear. The only way I can stop it so far is to run it tender first!
@oobill13 күн бұрын
Try bending the valve gear outwards a bit. Also check the back to back of the drive wheels.

Yeah sorry I made a mistake it was Hornby Triang Spare Parts I got them from.
@jeffreysmith15614 күн бұрын
Excellent entertainment as always. One thing: I do not think that is the correct front bogie. I have never known Hornby 9Fs to have plastic wheels but if it runs OK then why not.
@oobill13 күн бұрын
Yeah I thought it was maybe a donor bogie. Or at least the wheels.
