Hi oscar, loved the insight into my childhood, after my father came out of the navy in about 1957/58. He bought me and my brother a hornby doublo train set. My memory does not tell me if it was tin of plastic but I do remember a level crossing and a small station. I think it was the same engine and wagons except my tanker was a milk wagon, U D and white. Funny wat comes back love following your memories and into yesteryear. Thanks take care and stay safe Eddy xx

But I am always looking to buy better models then sell the worse one on. I love it. Keep yours going your collecting is wonderful as is your layout. Regards Paul osman

Hi Oscar, thanks for sharing a really nice upload. For me it was a real blast from the past. I had a Hornby Dublo 2 rail layout as a kid in Glasgow in the 1960’s and most of the stock was bought in the Clyde Model Dockyard. I recognised the label on your box immediately and have many happy memories of being in that shop with my Dad on many different Saturday afternoons. The shop was always very busy and sometimes it was difficult to even get through the door. It was located in a smallish L shaped shopping arcade called the Argyle Arcade, with one end off Argyle Street and the other off Buchanan Street, both important shopping areas in the centre of Glasgow at that time. I also recognised the Esso petrol tanker, and had a silver 2 rail version with, as far as I can remember, a metal shell and plastic ends. I think the chassis was die-cast, with plastic couplings and nylon wheels. I know of the locomotive in your video, but never owned or ran it. My first loco was a SR 4-6-2 Barnstaple. It had silver painted buffers, which, inevitably, chipped after many accidents with a young driver, and the colour underneath was the same as on your model, suggesting your buffers could have been originally silver, and that the top layer of paint may have come off over the years. I have many fond memories of that first layout, and it was a real wrench seeing it go after having had it for over 25 years. Thanks for a nice trip down memory lane, Stewart.

Morning Oscar Well what a lovely set of models built to last and yours proves that point, and can be found at shows in some really nice condition. Yours was first made in 1938 they made both electric and clockwork, then made again after the war in 47. I don't collect 3 rail but I do have a substantial amount of wrenn and do have 7 of these lovely locos in various liveries. I have a small amount of dublo 2 rail but does not include the n2. Inherently the coupling on the back is the later one as the plate was made longer to prevent uncoupling while running. Very enjoyable Oscar I do look forward to my Sunday morning with my coffee, keep it going. Regards Paul osman

Good to see Hornby Dublo being given a run out Oscar! You did a pretty good job on fixing up the van too. I’ve seen someone selling vinyl overlays for the Dublo tinplate wagons on that well known auction website, plus all manner of bits and pieces to keep these fine locos, and diesels (can’t forget the BO-CO class 28!), running. I’ve managed to refurbish a lot of my Dublo vans and coaches, replaced the couplings with the medium size Hornby tension lock couplings, and they still run happily on my layout. I love ‘em! Great video as always for that Sunday jaunt down memory lane👍🏻👍🏻

Fascinating look at what are very basic models but infinitely charming. I can imagine many happy hours could be spent watching the trains go by while Dinky & Corgi vehicles patiently wait at the crossing gates. Lovely stuff. A quick thank you is in order too. Some information I found in one of your videos has proved invaluable and has helped me put together a video that coincidentally features Hornby Dublo stock too. Another very enjoyable video: whilst lacking the detail of today’s models Hornby Dublo models captured the strength and weight of their real life counterparts. I was given a Hornby train set over sixty years ago and I only have to look at my model of the Duchess of Atholl to be transported straight back to Euston Station in the late 50s looking with awe at the massive Pacific at the front of the Glasgow sleeper.

Lovely stuff. I do have a few bits of Dublo myself but in a poorer condition, I don't remember how we came to owning it I think it must have been given to my father at some point when I was very young. We never had any track and an attempt was made to convert the one loco to two rail but it never worked, I think the motor winding was shot. My Esso tank wagon is very faded by sunlight and a gate on the level crossing is broken. It's always interesting to see these things running as they would have done back in the day.

Very interesting to see that today. It's running extremely nicely too. Each item was made to last and shows the attention Meccano put into design and manufacture. Something that became unsustainable in the early 1960's and didn't end well for them. Strangely enough I'm running a Tri-ang Wrenn heavy freight locomotive on my test layout at the moment so at least the legacy of Binns Road lived on until the 1990's in Basildon.

Hi Oscar, great video as usual. Although I am dyed in the wool Triang I recently inherited an HD 2 rail boxed A4 ‘Golden Fleece’, a boxed Deltic, a boxed 2-6-4 Tank, a boxed Bo-Bo Diesel, a repainted N2 Tank and an 0-6-0 shunter. All in pretty much mint condition, except of course the repaint. In addition a tinplate Royal Mail set which throws the bag half way across the room!! The quality of these models, as previously stated is superb and definitely ‘Clyde Built’ excuse the pun. Good decision to look at something different.

Yes very well built, but more 'Mersey Built' from the Meccano factory at Binns Road Liverpool. This one was just sold by the "Clyde Model Dockyard" in Glasgow. Maybe over built in that this lead to the higher cost of Hornby Dublo and the price disadvantage was a major part of Hornby losing out to Tri-ang.

Thanks for another interesting video Oscar. The Dublo 2 rail 0-6-2 tank locomotive example I have is from the short period when Hornby Dublo red box had an adhesive Tri-ang Hornby label on it. By this time it had the Nylon or plastic version of the Hornby Dublo coupling. The instructions says "SALES No. 2217 (For 2-Rail Track)". Nothing that looks like a date on the stapled instruction booklet or the guarantee slip. Unlike Tr-ang stamps on instructions. The loco running number is 69550 with later "Ferret and Dartboard" BR symbol. I am surprised that even at this late stage Dublo were putting the makers symbol on the bunker back. Most makers stopped those sort of visible makers marks by then. This had the substantial vertical motor mechanism like yours. Unlike yours mine does not have a screw in front of the smokebox. Was pleased to buy this second hand, but in near new condition, at a local Australian hobby shop in the 1990s. Quite different to my earlier new purchase Wrenn LNER and LMS examples. An interesting fact is that I believe Hornby Dublo never called these an N2. No N2 markings on the box or any Dublo literature that I have seen. Perhaps too freelance and off scale dimensions for Dublo to call it an N2. Unlike many later locos like the Castle, 8F, West Country etc. The Deltic of Dublo may have been another that they did not call a Deltic originally at least. Might be an early non bot comment.

Oscar . I can't find the quote but it had been pointed out the biggest reason for the demise of Hornby Dublo, is that in their last years they kept making production far in excess of what they were selling. I think of the order of 20 items in store for 1 sold. The cost of producing and storing this excess inventory for too long is what really brought them undone. Later Wrenn showed the demand was there, by producing improved versions of Hornby Dublo for many more years than Dublo did, for so many Dublo designs. Wrenn better matched production to demand for many years.

Hi John, just by chance I was reading The Art of Hornby compiled by Richard Lines this afternoon and this short pice of text indicates that Hornby were producing massive stocks right back in the late 1920s. "In the space of two years, five classes of locomotive were introduced. With at least four liveries available for each (overseas railway companies were also catered for) this meant that twenty new models were loaded on the factory. Soon afterwards each locomotive was offered alternatively with an electric motor, doubling the variety. On top of these there were also a host of cheaper types of locomotive. Taken together with the rolling stock, track and accessories they all combined to make a truly massive system. It is difficult in these days of computer controlled production processing to comprehend how such a variety could be produced so that retailers orders were met by immediate delivery. Nevertheless it was done and it was a rare experience to find a retailer who did not have one's wants in stock." The words "orders were met by immediate delivery" really stand's out after reading you comment. They must have just continued the ethos of high volume production! Thanks again. Oscar

Hello Oscar. Last Sunday after watching your video I went to the A&E dept. at our hospital. I came home a few hours after having had an emergency appendectomy. I have spent the last week convalescing and reading "Hornby" "The Official Illustrated History" by Ian Harrison. It would seem that the N2 was introduced prior to the war certainly in a clock work version and resumed when materials became available in the late 1940's. Hornby kept pace very well with the changes in liveries at that time and I noticed that yours has the early BR crest which may assist in dating the model as indeed might the price on the box. My own collection of Hornby Dublo is very small with only 3 items in tin printed stock. I have a fish van (3-rail) with the old couplers and two tank wagons (2-rail) one with the later metal coupler and the other with plastic couplers. I do have the crossing and an island platform. Sadly I don't have that version of the N2. I have one from the 2012 Olympic commemoration set. Take care, Regards, David.

This Dublo model also reminds me of one of the earliest Tri-ang models, the little known R.51 diecast clockwork N2 tank. This was even closer to scale length than the Dublo model. The N2 design liked by many, Kirdon and Gaiety also, as the high boiler allowed more room for mechanisms and weight while having the simplicity of inside cylinders. The N2 was nearly modern when the tooling was done. It seems from my reading in one rare source, that about 300,000 R.51 models may have been made but rare today. The die casting of such a large body was difficult for Tri-ang, so dropped soon for the reversing mech plastic bodied clockwork models of the saddle tank and diesel 0-6-0 shunter. Clockwork important then due to cost and complication of electric operation for many homes. DC grid areas especially. Transformers expensive then. A few diecast items from Tri-ang were made although thought of as plastic company. Mine were lots of die cast loading gauges for standard track. All the bogies and chassis die cast. R.51 was the first loco of a friend here in Australia and still has the loco and 1956 receipts. So many would say Tri-ang never made a die cast body loco. Was originally Trackmaster but I think Tri-ang really wanted the Trackmaster open wagon and van which became used for the long running R.10 and R.11. Talk also of a test R.59 3MT tank body in die cast proposal, but magnets and plastic bodies were judged to be a better future direction. So Tri-ang loyalists can say the Tri-ang R.51 N2 was more accurate to scale than Dublo. A rare claim for Tri-ang.
@oscarpaisley
@oscarpaisley 4 жыл бұрын
Good afternoon John, I think you right about Tri-ang wanting those wagons. A cast R.59 would really have been something. But as you say plastic moulding probably seemed the way to go especially with the newer more reliable and cheaper to produce clockwork motors. I do have an R.51 although not in working order sadly, you can see it animated in this video kzbin.info/www/bejne/pnbSkHRqlsiriNE I've never had the heart to take it apart. Thanks. Oscar

@@oscarpaisley Hi Oscar, thanks for the link to the R.51. Must have escaped my viewing on earlier years of your site. Likely the first and only one on KZbin from my experience. Thanks for the work with the animation. Quite a specialised rare skill set to get these clockwork mechanisms working again when broken. Even the very good Hornby Railways Collector Guide does not know of the R.51 existing it seems. If I could , make a suggestion to at some stage to include a visual comparison with the Dublo version with your useful catalouge reference. Would show up well scale wise against the Dublo and surprise many. I think many are not aware of this Tri-ang catalouged item and that it was a die cast body. The late 50s 0-6-0 clockwork reversible mechanisms do not get much coverage either. I ran my Australian Maroon 0-6-0 diesel version ( like an R.152) as a joke on my club layout. Made it quite a distance to the next station down the line and caused consternation at the next station when they could not shut it down when they thought they had electrical control of it. As I planned and tested previously, it ran out of spring force before any train conflicts could happen. The Australian maroon version possibly trying to replicate the Victorian Railways shunting red diesel livery from the 1950s until middle 60s. My later Wrenn versions of this 0-6-2 T were purchased at the Model Dockyard. But the Melbourne Australia Model Dockyard in Swanston St Melbourne. Seems "The Model Dockyard" was a popular name for a model shop. Trying to get the benefit of the history of the first Model Dockyard dating back to the 1700s. Likely Australias leading Model train shop and so big they advertised in the Railway Modeller in the mid sixties. eg Most of page vi of the May 1966 Railway Modeller was their big news was that they were having made, by Kumata brass in Japan, an HO NSWGR AD60 4-8-4+4-8-4 Beyer Garrett at a price of £A76 . At that stage a top of the range Tri-ang Brittania was about £8/9/6 here , so the Garrett was a breathtaking price and made in just hundreds or so. Still sold out before delivery so amazing to my young budget levels. So traditional was the Dockyard, that even when Australia converted to Dollars and cents on 14th February 1966, the Dockyard advertised and left everything price marked in pound shillings and pence for as long as possible. At the cash register they would total everything up and then convert to the then new Australian dollars. Still provided bargains for Wrenn at about 30% to 40% under Hornby prices from the mid seventies to closure in about 1984. A very much missed shop and coincidentally talked about on radio talkback this afternoon and during the week,

Good morning John, the Garrett sounds terrific, especially the price. Just found this link with a picture www.beyergarrattlocos.co.uk/model.html stunning looking models. They must have really known there market to have collaborated with Kumata on supplying such a model. Thanks again for the information and taking the time to watch. Oscar

@@oscarpaisley Thanks Oscar. Hard to find much information on Model Dockyard related items, so the link was welcome. Reminds me of so many Garratt AD60s being made over the years. I have two of the cheaper options. Kumata were originally a jewelry manufacturing company but turned to making model trains to order firstly for the US brass market then later order from some other countries. So much less risk than predicting jewelry fashions. In the seventies they made a brass LMS Crab then a Castle and King class for UK firms. The Dockyard was one of the first outside the US to order runs models to their designs for Australian trains. First in 1963 for the Dockyards order for a NSW C38 with plans and photos supplied by the Dockyard. Many trips of Dockyard owner to Japan to monitor progress. Since the late 1950s increasing amounts of Dockyard shelf space was given to expensive and profitable US brass. They knew these sold well to the likes of Lawyers, Doctors and Bankers even at £A110 for a Tenshodo Big Boy or £185 for a KTM O scale L-131 2-8-8-2. So perhaps these cashed up buyers were asked or asked of interest in similar models of Australian locomotives. However the 1967 Victorian Railways Hudson at £A39 took a lot longer to sell out, so after that re runs were the order of the day. Small numbers of all these Australian locos were sold in the US under the PFM brand or in Europe as Fulgurex. One in the US : kzbin.info/www/bejne/lXPPZXmkq7-Sn8k This was at a time when £A30 a week was a good wage. Some modellers waiting for new ranges of better Dockyard brass local models, got tired of waiting and set up their own company and went to Korea. This started the 1980s boom of Korean brass models on Australia,

Nice to see a Dublo video. The models do have a different quality to the Triang items. The paint might chip off but they are very difficult to break, and repaintable if you are so inclined. I think that the extra weight help with electrical pick-up too. Have you come across the Gaiety version? I have a somewhat play-worn example to restore and convert to 2-rail (Prices are (or should be!) similar to the Dublo version). Thank you for another enjoyable video. :-)

Hi, defiantly carry a bit of weight these models, as some one below in the comments built to last many lifetimes. I hadn't come across the the Gaiety version until you had mentioned them, I just had a look on that auction site (JVM Gaiety Class N2 metal body shell British railways 46917 - OO) and youtube kzbin.info/www/bejne/hWWlg5x7hJaLr8k they look great with British Railways as part of the casting. I do have a early clockwork Track-Master/Tri-ang Railways style 0-6-2 Tank. Thanks again for watching. Oscar

@@oscarpaisley Thank you. I only discovered Gaiety when we my father-in-law gave us his old collection of railway items. In amongst them was a Gaiety Pannier on a Triang Chassis. It rather confused me until I found some info on-line. A good source of info is: www.binnsroad.co.uk/railways/gaiety/index.html They are not quite rare, but it is difficult to find a good one! They generally don't sell for too much, I think because they are largely forgotten - the expensive ones on that auction site have been there for months. Looking forward to your next video! Keep well. Gord :-)

Hi Oscar. I have 2 of them. One H/D and one by Wrenn. They are great models with a real solid look on the track. Always wondered why the H/D engines never had a load of coal when the Wrenn ones did. I was wondering if you could help me. I am currently restoring a tender drive Hornby Black 5. It is nearly finished except for one small problem. I cannot get any conrods for it. Do you have any idea where I might get some or do the conrods from any other engine fit. I have tried all the usual suspects.
@johnd8892
@johnd8892 4 жыл бұрын
I am sure Dublo did add the coal load later in production but cannot easily pin down the date. Likely early sixties. The Dublo 2 rail 0-6-2 tank locomotive example I have is from the short period when the Hornby Dublo two rail red box items had an adhesive Tri-ang Hornby label on it to clear them out by Tri-ang after the Hornby Mecanno near bankruptcy. So this would be a later production item. I have not compared the loadn to the coals on my Wrenn versions, but would expect Wrenn would always prefer not to re-tool any body if they did not need to. Unusual that all newer models did have an appropriate coal load. As to why, one theory of mine is related to the fact that Dublo factory sources I have linked to in my other comments did look down on the 0-6-2 Tank, looking at it as a near freelance model and not even being called an N2 in any Dublo materials. Always keener on the newer more to scale models. Perhaps not thought worthy of an upgrade by Dublo until late in the piece.

Hi Gerard, I'm not sure why it went for so long without a coal load, John D in the comments below indicates it was added quite late on in its life. Ive read that the BR version at the late stage may have got plated wheels, spoked plastic pony truck wheels, fine metal handrails and plastic couplings. Possible this was an attempt at stimulation sales. With you Black Five, if its an earlier model try searching for the Britannia/Oliver Cromwell R.259/R.063/R.522 valve gear/rods. Pat Hammonds book indicates that this was used on the early models up to about 1977. Thanks for watching

Hi Oscar. They made a 2-rail version of that level crossing which is harder to find than the three-rail one. The rails are usually rusty, but you should be able to restore it with some rust remover! I have got the lovely D1 Art Deco through station footbridge and Island Platform. They are very expensive to buy pristine, but very cheap in tatty condition. The Hornby Forum recommends to strip and re-spray with a grey undercoat and then in Ford Sierra Beige, which is £6.99 a can from eBay. See link below. The inspiration for the Hornby Dublo D1 Art Deco station and footbridge is Hoylake Station in Liverpool. kzbin.info/www/bejne/jnOxfnd6r56mfpo Beacontree station is also by the same architect en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Becontree_tube_station#/media/File:Becontree_station_building.JPG Hornby Dublo platform re-spray colour www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Hycote-Ford-Sierra-Beige-150ml-Double-Acrylic-Spray-Paint-Aerosol-XDFD112/172385425763?epid=1610912558&hash=item2822f8d963:g:OecAAOSwMVdYEdJO

Oscar, The 1965 Tri-ang amalgamation leaflet gives the price of the R. 2217 0-6-2 tank loco of 56 s 9d. So not too far off the 49 shillings 8 pence reading in the comments that may be on your earlier box and allowing for inflation. kzbin.info/www/bejne/oqnblmd4fN5ghJI Two rail, plated wheels, plastic trailing wheels and plastic couplings. Even Tri-ang were not calling it an N2 in their leaflet. A story from a collector in Australia, was that if you were in the know circa 1966, you could go to places where the R. 2217 was $5. Kicking myself that I did not know this at the time.

Oscar. Not an N2. Why the Dublo 0-6-2 Tank locomotive in not an N2 from John Gahan who started with Hornby in 1941 as was a key person in Hornby Dublo : kzbin.info/www/bejne/epPMfqSfa5l4a6M So he makes the point strongly and should know, given the knowledge he demonstrates in the rest of the video. A key insider from Dublo and luck to tap his knowledge when thos was made. Hope you find this interesting and not an attack on you and you valuable videos.

That looks like an excellent video and I will make time to watch it. I think that the problem with 'not' calling the 0-6-2 an N2 is that it has been called an N2 for the past 70-ish years, and it is now identified as such by most people. That said, I think that most product from the 50s-70s were quite freelance too. All said - you are not wrong!

Hi, John thanks for the link it's an interesting point and seems Hornby Dublo did little at the time to make the point as Gord points out in the comments below. It seems an overwhelming proportion of Journalists/writers, Dealers, Collectors and some Manufactures have rightly or wrongly referred to these great little Model toy trains as N2 since they were first produced.
