Hello, Oscar. What a wonderful running session. Love the scenes with trains on charging around on both the Hornby Dublo 3 rail track & Tri-ang Series 3 rails . Great stuff! Best regards from your fan in British Columbia, Canada.

Thanks Oscar, it's good to see the difference between the Black 5 models, I too prefer the earlier Ringfield, I have 9f that out performs a later version Evenin Star, I do think it's shame Hornby Dublo never offered a Black 5, if their 8f is anything to go by it would have been an excellent model.

Thanks Paul, Glad you enjoyed seeing those two models together. It is a lovely motor the early Ringfield. Oscar

Hi Oscar, On my steeple cab loco, the motor has a single start Worm fitted. The top speed is greatly reduced but slow running is phenomenal. Do you know if the original motor in this was of the single work type? Did you notice any difference in speed when fitting the new motor? I'm not sure if mine is original or has been retrofitted at some point like this. I'd like to convert all my 0-4-0s/0-6-0s to single start worms, as speed wise they would be more accurate. However on the original service sheets part numbers for the worms themselves aren't given, only the whole motor assembly.

Hi Oscar an update on my previous message here.... I have recently been fortunate enough to get both the earlier R653 and the later red model. Both are in really great condition and were at reasonable prices. The Wagon-lits will be a test to my commitment in wanting them enough to pay the steep prices they fetch. Sidebar: I have seen a few of the Australian Suburban EMUs on eBay of late with asking prices in their thousands. Have you by any chance got some of these models?

I have got 2 Black Five Locos Oscar & one of them I bought early last year only b/c it had the Steam Generator & I didn't realise that to use the Steam Gen. you have to be Digital - & I didn't have Digital - Only Analogue!!! So in the past few days I had to d/l the HM 7000 Controller on to my Tablet & get a Power Unit to go plug directly into the Track to get it working Properly!!! Lovely Locos thou - Here is a Question Oscar - Can you still call it a 'Black 5' if it is in the Reddish Maroon Livery??? Thanks for sharing!!! 🤔😉🚂🚂🚂

What I really love about your videos is the basic non pretentious trainset style presentation, no scenery, just out the box so to speak. I like the rawness of the product , it was the studd of childhood imagination, but of course I grew up and wanted more high fidelity models. What really amazes me about your trains Oscar is that everytime you power on, the engine moves. So often I have to give mine a nudge.

Good morning Oscar. You have a couple of fine running models in your Black 5's. I really don't think accuracy was in the forefront of Hornby's planning at that time. It was a different era and the models needed to be robust for their intended owners. That said, no Black 5's have ever made it into my collection. I did enjoy the running today, thank you. David.

Hi Oscar. Have you ever thought about making a siding which joins the three rail layout to the two rail one so that you can exchange goods wagons and coaches between the two layouts. It is just an idea.

There was a Black 5 painted red at Steamtown Carnforth in the early 70s, the inspiration for the livery? But it was lettered FR (Furness Railway) instead of LMS. There is a short video of it on KZbin. Great video as usual Oscar.

I added my first black 5 to my fleet last year, it isn’t an old hornby one though, it’s one of the most recent hornby ones, great video overall here Oscar, it’s a nice loco, heard many things about it in regards to how triang/hornby made it by basically using a bunch of parts that were made for other models, keep up the great work.

Good morning Oscar. I recently uploaded a new video on KZbin yesterday, would you be interested in watching it? The new video is called Thomas and The Strasburg Railway.
@gerardburton37417 күн бұрын
Hi Oscar. Happy new year. I love the black 5. It is a shame that it never ran in this colour in real life. I am not sure but didn't Triang make a green version as well. You can repair the tender body by running a line of superglue along the broken inside area forming a ridge along the bottom of the body. Then sprinkling baking soda on to the glue. Leave it overnight and then it sets like iron. It can then be filed into a more pleasing shape to fit the clip. Then just touch up the paint a bit.

Nice video again. Not a loco I ever owned but very much the class 47 or class 66 if it's day, but a surprising lack of liveries compared to it's diesel descendants, any colour you want as long as it is black!

Good snowy morning, it was nice to see some midland stuff running. Quite a difference in cylinders on those two. I never managed to get a black five.. living in Sheffield and looking back it seemed a lot of traffic on our line we’re 440’s the Duchesses never ran through.. in fact when the “ City of Sheffield” came through to receive it’s stainless name plates it rubbed the platform. So see you next Sunday happy sledging.

Morning Oscar . The red one not correct at all . There never was a red Black 5 . Even though my railway totally inaccurate I could never bring myself to buy one . One of my hang ups because I did buy the LMS coaches that were really BR mk1s . I do have several black 5s but all later variants . I do remember it being introduced in 1973 , the top model that year

Great video, Oscar! I have the Black 5… valve gear used to stick so I started a project to put an X04 motor in. That was 44 years ago. Still all in bits in the lovely Silver Seal box! Maybe I’ll get it back together and see if the valve gear just needs a little adjustment and go back to ringfield tender drive… maybe.
@simonturner54507 күн бұрын
Thanks Oscar, lovely to see the Black 5s in action, one of my favourites. The valve gear on the red one, although having the plastic cross head, is much more realistic as the black one uses the Britannia valve gear to save costs which is pure fiction. The popping handrails you mentioned are certainly a problem on my Duchesses from this time. But for all their faults they are wonderful and transport me back many years each time I see them.

Again, thank you for showing your excellent layout. Keep safe Oscar,and ill see you next Sunday. 👍🚂

Good evening Martin thanks again for looking in we had a great Christmas and New Year here, very quiet and relaxing. I didn't get anything specifically for the railway this year, although I did have a couple of items arriving in the post just before Christmas. with new items for the railway it's usually a case of I know it when I see it, although I am on the lookout for bits and pieces of interesting Hornby Dublo rolling stock for the three Rail and possibly the 0-6-0 diesel shutter for three Rail if one shows up at a sensible price. Wish you all the best for the coming year. Oscar

Very nice video! I own the same locomotive, albeit not as tidy as your example. Bought it as a bit of a project, but sadly the plastic tender frame has all but crumbled.
@oscarpaisley4 күн бұрын
Morning Sam thanks for looking in. Great to hear you have this in your collection. I'm not sure what sort of plastic they used for the tender frames but I think it becomes brittle overtime especially and I don't think oil and lubricants help it's longevity. I've had a similar problem with models from this period. Oscar

It is a shame that clockwork sets have all gone from the main manufacturer's ranges, but I personally would love to see them return. I think they'd be a great entry point for children to come in to the hobby and also children who are unable to afford an electric train set, especially if they're now costing almost £100+ RRP. But to be honest I can't see it happening.

I had that set one Christmas back in the 70’s. You got one wagon some fake plastic coal chips and the discharge platform/bridge. Once set up I had hours of fun with it, got 4 more hopper wagons later so it was quite impressive discharging 5 wagons in one go. Still got them on my layout ❤

A fine display of East Coast Mainline power there with those models Oscar! Those Dublo coaches have a beautiful lustre to their maroon paintwork don't they? I think I prefer the Dublo A4 to the Hornby one, even though the Dublo version is a cruder model and lacks the fine detail of the other. I think it's that the Dublo model has that old fashioned proper engineering quality about it with its wonderful motor and heavy cast body that the plastic Hornby with its cheaper later Ringfield doesn't. Some lovely footage of all the models running at the end Oscar. Regards, Antony

Thanks Oscar, a good bit of East Coast main line running, I have a Dublo Golden Fleece, I would rather like Mallard, I do love the Super Detail coaches, a shame Wrenn didn't produce a version, but I think they were very costly to manufacture, good clean versions are out there, and the passenger full brake and sleeper coaches can be picked up for not too much money, the boxed examples tend to be in better condition.

As my dublo 3 rail stock got larger and larger over the years, I found it interesting that more times than now the super details stayed in the boxes. I just really started enjoying the presence, sound, look, construction, just everything about the traditional tinplate stock. And after the purchase of my first prewar Sir Nigel and acquiring many of the gresley teaks and articulated coaches, there was no going back for me. I think in my mind dublo was always a period train, harking back to their prewar introduction and how they were so ahead of their competition, and the trains modelled were still in first rate service. With the later super details, EMU'S, plastic wagons etc it felt like future triang(hornby) territory. Super details are superb, just for me the full tinplate construction and compromises made to create a robust, fully functional model railway is dublo to a tee :) As an aside, as an avid budding train enthusiast in my youth, it puzzled me greatly as to why, when running on the family dublo, the world's fastest steam locomotive, the mighty mallard, repeatedly lost against the speedy Dorchester. I pored through my train books to find reference to this almighty speed king, now presumably the fastest in the world, but couldn't find anything about this particular loco. Funny how I used to think that a model trains performance was an exact replica of the real thing, and yet things like undersized driving wheels, 3 coach express trains, and 3 rails never really bothered me.

Hi, the tinplate coaches and earlier rolling stock really do have a lovely robust feel and sound about them, very enjoyable to run. Thanks for looking in. Oscar

A great video to end 2024 with. My Dublo Mallard - a gift in 1960 has all metal wheels. It went into storage in 1962 only to re- emerge in the 90s. Consequently it is in very good condition. Now on display I have managed to run it on my Marklin m track layout by swapping the ac controller with a dc one! Best wishes for 2025.
