Hornby Dublo 103 'Flying Scotsman' & Why You Don't Need The Most Expensive Models

As part of the #FlyingScotsman100 celebrations, Hornby released a set of six limited edition models of the famous 'Flying Scotsman' locomotive for OO. The twist with these models is that they are all fully die-cast! I chose the 1946 version, R30210, but do you gain anything over other version of 'Flying Scotsman', die-cast or otherwise?

Nice vid, btw the dublo model you have is actually an A3, the distinguishing feature is the pair of square superheater header covers present behind the chimney on A3s. While it is true that only A3s had banjo domes, the early A3 boilers had round domes.

Flying Scotsman isn't an A3 in this, as she was still an A1 in 1946. Scotsman was converted into an A3 in January 1947.

@@tgeiii3554 you're right that the conversion was finished in 1947, but this dublo model is certainly an A3, with the 94HP boiler with a round dome. The model and 1946 branding don't match!

I have the previous tooling A3 Flying Scotsman from Hornby. Got it for £125 (I think) from Locomotiion Models a good few years back now and from what I can tell in the video the detail levels on the new Dublo one don't look that much better. So to reiterate what was said in the video the older tools are still very much worth getting if you can find them. That being said though that diecast boiler must feel lovely and that paint finish looks great too. I'm glad you enjoy this model like you do too. I mean that's what these are for

lovely review. I'm still waiting for my Hornby dublo Scotsman, and I'm glad that I seem to be getting a very nice and quality model. You also make a very good point about the detail of the old scotsman Vs the new scotsman, when I saw your tweet on twitter I thought you bought two dublo scotsmans for a second lol, guess I should think before I tweeted my reply. Hope your day is well!

I'm kinda glad this year the Southern railway doesn't have much in the way of new models coming out. It's giving me resources to work on my own layout of Gosport Railway station.

I sold my early 1980s tender drive one at my Club's annual Exhibition in March. An old boy bought it whose Dad worked at the original Hornby factory on Binns Road in Liverpool 😮. But that old loco had a beautiful paint finish and was the green colour shade as per your video, so an eye catcher. I sold it because I was awaiting delivery of the new Dublo original 1923 version. Upon its delivery, I too thought that only one red ribbon lid tie was a bit mean. The loco's boiler dome also immediately fell off, so I had to glue it back on. I too first tested it with a 9V battery & the wheels and motion rotated with great ease, which was a first. Locos normally struggle, so I suspect it will be an excellent runner. On your demonstration, it certainly has presence and gravitas, probably its extra weight on the rails gives it a different rolling noise to the lighter plastic versions. My original 1964 made 2-rail Hornby Dublo A4 makes a similar rolling noise.

The best A3’s to get are the Hornby Ltd gloss editions: - Firdaussi (LNER green) - Flying Scotsman (Locomotion Models, BR Green) They look as good as Bachmann and Bassett Lowke.

Or even better, a Finney A1/A3! That way you dont have to deal with the chassis block being visible, you can easily get visible inside motion, and you dont have the flimsy, unrealistic Hornby tinplate valve gear!

I've got the USA Tour version as I missed out on the 2013 and the 2020 editions. I'm glad I waited I'm very happy with it. Got her for 300£ from the Model Centre and yes, while it is extremely expensive but I think hornby knows that the Flying Scotsman centenary is a big celebration and that people will pay it regardless just like I did. Mine arrived with a broken dome it came off when I opened the model in the box. Had to glue it back in. Annoying, but that A-side she's my favorite model in the collection the double tender, cowcatcher and light look so good. My first detailed and modern locomotive. I really like it a lot

Flying Scotsman was converted to an A3 in 1946. During WW2 the loco was an A1 and painted black. It didn't get repainted Doncaster green until it was converted to an A3.

Nice Review!, Also that's actually an A3. Some A3s did have the round dome but you can tell that a pacific is an A3 by the box thing or cover at the smokebox.

That would be the superheater headers? Also Scotsman was rebuilt into an A3 in 1947 so I took the year on the box as gospel as to it therefor being an A1.

There is one other benefit for diecast over plastic, though - performance. I currently have three, soon to be four, N-scale steam locomotives - a Bachmann 4-8-2 USRA Light Mountain, a Model Power/MRC Modern Baldwin 4-4-0 American, and a KATO JNR D51. The KATO model has dual traction tires so it outperforms my other steamers, but of the other two, my 4-4-0 actually outpulls my 4-8-2 because its diecast body gives it more weight and thus more traction. I know that Hornby models tend to be pretty light compared to other brands, so that diecast Scotsman will likely be able to pull a longer train than its plastic siblings, _especially_ on layouts with grades.

i agree that the model looks nice but i wouldnt buy it because details like rivits become invisible when you stand less then half a meter away and to me thats just a waste of money i got the limited edition of flying scotsman with 2 tenders from the 90s and its a great runner and looks good from a distance and close up

The Hornby Dublo range is not my favourite at all. I find the models are very overpriced, as a model being made of nearly all metal is not a reason for charging an extra £100 in my opinion, as models such as the new Hornby 9f, the B12, D16, The Peckett, the Dapol D Class, (etc.) all have a lot of metal work as well, and do not cost nearly as much as this. I personally will be waiting until Hornby bring back the Apple Green Scotsman into their railways range when I pick up one for myself. Great Video, and keep up the great work!

Be careful with these Dublo Scotsman’s; the two I’ve come into contact with thus far have suffered a broken off dome. Super glue repairs were required because the actual “plug” was sheered off in transit ala W1-gate. The dirty wheels seem a common issue too but I’m hoping this means they’ve been tested prior to shipping.
