Just love your vids. Love those old Hornby tinplates cars. Now, I`m an old Märklin collector but Märklin never produced any cars going along with its D830 made back in the 60ties. But Hornbys tinplates works! Wheelchange and coupling changes and it is a lovey sight as they makes just the same «noise» rolling down the Märklin metal tracks as they did on the cool Made by Meccano tracks. Keep on posting! Cheers from Norway. 🚂🚃🚃

Good morning, thank you for watching, great to hear you're enjoying seeing my collection of model Railway items. I've always admired the Märklin items but sadly I've never had any in my collection apart from a now long gone catalogue from 1975! As a child in the mid 1970s I are used to get to visit the Hamleys toy shop in Regent Street London. There was quite a fantastic display of Märklin in the store. I remember it as being quite exotic compared to the Hornby railway items sold alongside it. I was hugely impressed by the many items depicted in the catalogue. Take care. Oscar

A very nice loco. The crispness of the die-cast detail is really good. Hornby got some great results with the process. Good to see the progress on the elevated section too. 😊

A very good morning Oscar, what a lovely model, the Dutchess of Atholl is one of those classic engines that that for me marked the step from toys just put on the floor and put away to a proper model railway that you could start to build up. I never did get one just to expensive for us but I always dreamed. I love the rattle of those tin coaches there's something very satisfying listening to them trundle along. Thanks once again Oscar I do love my Sunday morning nostalgia. Take care Eddy xx

My athol had the same missing paint on the drawbar. It looks to me that they did not prepare the drawbar for painting and over the years the paint did not hold onto the surface as it should have, mine also had corrosion around the rivet heads on the lower cab, possibly due to dissimilar metals causing a chemical reaction. All fixed now , changed the block magnet for a neo magnet and it runs very well. I would have added smoke deflectors aka D of M but the Athol does not have the three lower fixing slots in the casting of course. I have 18 three rail engines on my set up, 3 D of M , two renamed to other Ds thanks to eBay and Silver Tay and his laser cut plates. One mallard on a three rail chassis and a Silver King renamed Silver Fox. Only one I haven’t got to is the 0 3 2 shunter in Southern green livery , too expensive for me. Thanks for putting up your vids keep up the good work .

Interesting to see the tender chassis in particular. I have a retired Triang Streamlined Coronation that had the same tender chassis (the body being plastic). It struggled with reversing as well. Great video and such high production standards as always. Best wishes, Tom.
@oscarpaisley
@oscarpaisley Жыл бұрын
Hi, I think you're right there's definitely a crossover of parts, they must've fitted the bill when Triang Hornby were planning the Streamlined Coronation. I found that bending in the tin axel mount to allow a little more leeway for the wheels/chassis to move against each other whilst negotiating the curves has all, but solve the problem. Thanks again for watching and the kind words, take care. Oscar

Hi Oscar, Lovely Duchess, built to last and it no doubt will. Loved the HD spanner or as I initially thought, Meccano spanner, same thing I suppose. I think I have a double ended cranked one somewhere 🙄. Re the emblem on the coach, in printing to achieve an acceptable image like that, all the colours have to print exactly on top of each other. In this case the red is slightly to the right, minor adjustment required. Some time ago I managed to pick up three ‘Caledonian’ tinplate carriages in the train set box and in mint condition. Sadly the Duchess was missing and had been replaced with a mint and boxed HD ‘GOLDEN FLEECE’. Not really complaining. Thanks again for a great video.
@oscarpaisley
@oscarpaisley Жыл бұрын
Hi Gordon, that sounds like a great purchase. The spanner could well be multipurpose, I think the locomotives may have been sold with one included in the box where needed originally.I imagine keeping the printing in register, must've been a bit of a task, they seem to achieved some amazing results across the range of coaches and wagons. Thanks again for watching and the info. Much appreciated.. Oscar

My Atholl hasn't got a horseshoe magnet. It has a cube-sized magnet with the two horseshoe sides screwed to it. Either the Atholl was made in other variants or it's a hybrid of an Atholl/Montrose as I know the latter loco had the magnet arrangement like my Atholl.
@oscarpaisley
@oscarpaisley Жыл бұрын
Hi, thanks for watching, from Reading Michael Fosters book on Hornby Dublo Trains. He indicates the move over to the (Alnico) split magnet arrangement from the earlier horseshoe type began across the range of electric models in the second half of 1949. All the best. Oscar
@TheShadman47
@TheShadman47 Жыл бұрын
Thanks Oscar. So your model must predate that. I must admit I had read the Atholl section in Foster's book, but didn't connect my one as being called an Alnico magnet motor. Also, I had consulted my Hornby Dublo Technical Manual written by David B Neale, and it only appeared to show the exploded diagram of the Delta mechanism of the Atholl.
@TheShadman47
@TheShadman47 Жыл бұрын
Since writing my reply (above), I again consulted the David Neale book, which, in a different section, shows a photo of the Atholl chassis with the Alnico magnet, dated 1950.

Hi Oscar, My Atholl dates from Christmas 1948 and I still have the mega play-worn set box. This set was a present to my wife, Grace, and before we married in June 1964 it was sent to Meccano Ltd repair Dept, in April 1964, to be converted to two rail operation. Being an ex-set model it was retuned to us in the distinctive ‘buff’ colour repair box with the usual black/white number sticker. Following the helpful advice of Ronald Dodd, she was fully serviced and given a re-mag about 3years ago and runs so very well, even over my three tier helix, pulling her faithful but re-wheeled grey roof coaches. A small tip, gleaned from an HRCA Journal article, is to fit a tiny (6mm dia.) neo magnet into the hole in the underside of the front bogie. This helps to hold the bogie on track, especially the HD metal track. This also helps on my helix, fitted with DCC ‘powerbase’ plates under the Peco code 100 track. Always enjoy your videos and my trips down memory lane. PS I also have a 3rail Atholl to run on my HD loose lay collection layout. T🚂

Good morning Oscar, it's Martin from Hull in the East Riding of Yorkshire, as i always do on a Sunday morning,I watch your video and have my cup of tea and my toasted tea cake, what a wonderful combanation.👍. Your Dutchess locomotive looks wonderful for her age and the coaches look splendid as well. I've noticed that the majority of your rolling stock are in excellent condition considering their age, which shows the great quality of British craftsmanship as was . Your rolling road is very interesting and very useful as well, I think all railway modelers should have one.. well I think i will make another cup of tea Oscar. stay safe and i look forward to your next video. 🙂👍🚂🚃🚃🚃

Good morning Martin, thanks again glad you enjoyed that. Definitely craftsmanship at play here, an amazing amount of work must gone into designing and manufacturing these items, just the skill's involved in making the initial scale drawings for the model from this period are quite something, then developing them with those materials into small castings for a body shell that could be then mounted onto a chassis with an integral motor that drove beautiful wheels and connection rods, that were also designed and worked from scale drawings in realistic materials of the day, It's a stunning amount of work and many many years before 3D scanning and computer-aided design. Just off to make a cup of tea myself, it's still quite early! take care. Oscar

Hello there! I have an ancient Montrose I was given as a child in the sixties. It’s previous owner obviously wanted an Atholl because she had been very badly repainted in red. In the late seventies frustrated with not being able to run it on my layout I sent it off to be converted to 2-Rail and it came back with what I assume to be Wrenn wheels. Later on I stripped the red paint completely and repainted and relined her in late BR green. She was City of Lichfield for a few years until I found some etched Montrose plates. Needs a remag but now I’ve successfully woken up several HD locos with 2 neodymium 7mm cube magnets that’s what shell probably get. Though it’s not likely to happen before I have a 2 rail layout again. I’ve been doing some eBay shopping too, and have a number of items waiting at my cousins to be picked up when we’re home from France this summer. Among them are 2 Atholl’s! The second one was a mistake, I put in a first and very low bid on it just to test the water. Then I forgot all about it after finding a very nice one with a low buy it now price. 3 days later i had a notification that I’d won the first one! I was the only bidder. Not sure whether to rename and renumber one of them to Abercorn or Buccleigh and keep it in original LMS red or if one is in very poor paint do a repaint into LMS black with red straw lining, or maybe early BR blue or the later LMR red… Like you I like original condition models, but with a good quality repaint they can look very smart!

Good morning, Robin sounds like you've got some great items waiting to pick, up it's always good to have a spare for parts, even if you don't get around to a bit of remodelling, it's amazing how different each of these locomotives can be. Thanks again take care. Oscar

@@oscarpaisley Just like the real thing, even locos of the same class can behave very differently. At the Vivarais Railway we had four Mallet 0-6-6-0T’s. The two early build examples, 401 and 404 were from the same 1901 batch , but they were vastly different beasties to drive or fire, even though apparently identical. For 1924 built 413 and 414 it was the same story. Looking forward to having jours of fun getting these Princess Coronations up to scratch! I have to say though a loco would have to be very far gone before I’d cannibalise it.

Excellent model to feature in this mornings video Oscar, I have a Duchess of Atholl myself but it’s been converted to 2 rail operation, it’s a really nice model overall, one thing though yours looks a lot smoother going round your railway compared to mine, mine has a lot of side to side movement when I’m running the model.
@oscarpaisley
@oscarpaisley Жыл бұрын
Hi David, great to hear you have one, I think there is a lot of movement side to side in these Dublo models in general, I think it helps tighter curves, especially coming through point work they really seem to snap from One Direction to another quite abruptly, that does appear to be quite a lot of play between wheels and chassis on these Dublo items. All the best. Oscar
