Hi again Bill. Thanks for sorting out my pretty little J15. The motor was definitely a dud, as it would have never pulled 12 wagons prior to the swap. Don't know if you noticed, but it also ran very hot at 3/4 to full power. A heart transplant was the right way to go, 100%. Lesson learned regarding returning locos of questionable quality without delay. I took delivery of a lightly used Std class 4MT from a very reputable source on Friday, but on first run, one of the valve gear pins fell out. So I've been in contact with the seller and it'll be going back on Monday.

I tested it and it wasn't drawing excessive current and it never got hot on prolonged tests. But I never tested it pulling a load. It'll be on its way back shortly.

@oobill Your comments regarding poorly balanced armatures are very interesting. I guess the only way to solve such a problem - apart from returning the model to the supplier in a timely manor - is to rewind them?

That was a very interesting maintenance video. In other videos you've mentioned using guitar strings as pick-ups, I'm going to give it a try. All the best from Padua, Italy.

Very interesting Bill . I’ve got two J36s that do run a bit slow , but they are acceptable enough . I wish Hornby would get their spares situation sorted out . They seem to be only bothered in selling you new models and not interested in longevity .

Nice wee model, and running beautifully. Good job!

@modelrailroader5619 Yes, I bought it as J15s used to chug up & down the erstwhile Waveney Valley line that used to run through the town in which I now live on the Suffolk/Norfolk border. Also, the North Norfolk Railway has one, and it looks great, especially in its original GER blue livery.

Good work Bill. Some motors are quiet and others are not. The layout is looking great Bill. Well done so far. Happy modelling 👍

Excellent work fixing this loco. When I first heard it run, I thought it was a chainsaw lol. And Maude looks good with coaches. Until we get more NBR in OO, I’m opting to get the ROD J36 and repainting it into that lined black.

This is an interesting one as I have a Hornby J15 and it runs beautifully. It seems like they're not quite solving their QC issues!

North West Short Line in The US make excellent gear/wheel pullers and a terrific press for pushing things back together.

Charles here is very right. I bought one myself but I have yet to use it. Keep in mind though Bill that they are rather expensive from them. If I remember right everything total was $70 USD for me, and that was just for a Quarterer and the Gear Puller

An expensive option and at the moment their website doesn't have photographs of most of their tools.

hi Bill. great video, yes i woud have returned it, its just not acceptable that hornby can turn out old bagnor locos all the time .the spares back up is ghastly.,modellers should be careful what makes they buy

@jeremynorman1330 Locos such as this used to ply their trade on the Waveney Valley line, which used to run through the town in which I now live on the Suffolk/Norfolk border.

@@stephendavies6949 Indeed. It was only two years ago that i moved from North Norfolk (adter 61 years) to NE Lincs.... No doubt all of the closed lines saw them...beautiful.

Hi Bill Just to let you know about this anomaly re Hornby Black 5 MTs which I know you have repaired. My never run one from ebay was slipping. Stripped down completely and found washers fitted were wrong size! Ordered correct replacements seems fine now. Excellent video/advice. Cheers

Hi. Just wondering if warming up the flywheel would help with removing it?
@johnbishop6667
@johnbishop6667 2 ай бұрын
Heat up the flywheel might help . Rather than drill bits I use the hard pins from very small cable clips ie for phone cables etc . Nice video Bill as always .
@oobill
@oobill 2 ай бұрын
Flywheels sometimes have blobs of a plastic like substance for balancing as these do in this case so heating them up sufficiently to expand them would be a bit dangerous. If they didn't budge after hammering them it would be the next thing to try though. Very carefully...

Another great video👍 may be time to invest in some pin punches as drill bits are to brittle, I’ve got some small punches made from old firing pins from old rifles so if you know anyone who Shoots it may be worth asking them

I had a similar problem with a replacement motor with flywheel I retrofitting to my D16. I ended up buying a second replacement motor and the second was far superior as far as noise. Seems some of these motors with flywheels are, as you say, unbalanced.

Why have not got a watchmakers lathe? You could make so many tools for this small work!!😅

Because they cost a fortune. But the thought of making bespoke tools is something i think about often.

Great job Bill, have you thought of investing in a proper plug puller from Hornby? Not expensive and do the job.

Yes. Actually I ordered one after working on the Flying Scotsman. I've never had trouble getting them out and in before though but thought I'd get one in case I have similar troubles in the future.
