I was sent this Made in China Hornby R2359 Class 5MT by a chap called James. He bought it from Hattons but it doesn't run anymore. Support - ko-fi.com/00bi... FAQ - ko-fi.com/post...

Another excellent informative video thanks Bill. Amazing how often there is a little detail overlooked which spoils the major repair, but you always find them!

They are quite fiddly, but nice job, and frank comments! How were the pickups on the tender? I often find these quite simply are never opened out and most just don't make contact when the axles move side-to-side. 'Yours' seemed OK over the points so at least some of the tender pickups must have been working. Thanks for sharing. Al.

Tender pickups were just dirty. The connections on the drawbar were a mess and needed straightening out though.

Was it a "Pre Owned" (AKA second hand) loco from Hattons? As a lot of the stuff on their website is often in poor condition!

Hi Bill ,, what's the brand of your new soldering iron please ? Ive recently got a ferris (aldi) brand soldering iron and its a butane type and it seems to work quite well. It heats up quick and does the job. Also the motors in this black 5 are they the can type motor. Ive just stumbled across another place to source free or cheap can motors besides the cd drive motors and thats in the electric door mirrors on cars and they have 2 of them in each mirror so even if you get a broken one (plastics) theres a good chance the motors are still in good nic. Cheers from John in Australia.

Swear during this era of Hornby they were purposely over complicating things... Absolutely awful designs some of them. That looked less fiddly than the T9s though. Good job 👍

I have a Hornby class 37 from the 70s that stop running after a while and needs a “cool down” before it runs again. If you know what is wrong or how to fix it I would be very great full if you could tell me.

Regardless, it could probably benefit from a service. Bill has covered both types of motor: the earlier open frame (twin worm), and the later Ringfield. You can tell which you have by the number of wheels on the motor bogie -- the twin-worm type has driving gears in the middle of the axles and dummy centre wheels. Look for either Tri-ang Class 37 or Class 31 videos for those (the chassis/motor is the same). Ringfield motors are all very similar (except the earliest 'Silver Seal', which are completely different!) and Bill has serviced countless, so there are plenty videos to choose from. As for the fault, it's probably a combination of poor (or old/dry) lubrication, dirty contacts/wheels/brushes, or a weak magnet (for the earlier motor, at least.) As I noted at the start, a thorough service should work wonders. Both motor types are pretty much indestructible if kept clean and lubricated properly. They are fairly easy to work on, but it's worth watching the video before you start dismantling!

I just don't get why such impractical designs are chosen. OO scale electric trains aren't exactly a new thing... As someone who has spent his career as an engineer it disappoints me to see such poor choices by the design team and ultimately the manufacturer. Great job as ever Bill.
