Hi Oscar, Good video on the Jinty variants. I have an older one with smoke but, as you say, unrealistic speed required to get any effect. I also have a Bachmann ‘weathered’ version which is a huge leap from the older one. All that said if you are having a shunting session then a Jinty pulling some trucks/carriages in reverse is an absolute must for realism. 😀

Ah! Love a Jinty! I never had one of these later models, though I must have sold a few during my Saturday job at Gill & Sons Models and Hobies Sutton Coldfield in the early 80's! I had 47606 as my second loco, probably in about 1969 or 70. Fitted with syncrosmoke. I still have her today. When I got more serious about my modelling around age 14 I decided she'd make a good depot "pet" as a contrast to my heavily weathered black five and 9F so she acquired metal handrails, vacuum pipes from wire wound guitar string, a new unlined gloss black finish with pressfix late BR transfers and swanky red painted coupling rods. Apart from some very light weathering to the wheels and underframe she's pretty much ex.works. At the time Railway Modeller published an article explaining how to introduce a degree of compensation to the rigid Triang six-coupled chassis by cutting a slot though the chassis to the axle hole. It worked a treat on the dreadful mix of tired Super 4 and system 6 track I had at the time. When her motor gave up in the early 80's you could get an (I think Airfix?) 5-pole motor as a direct swap for the X04 so she has one of these. She's packed away at the moment with all my other railway stuff awaiting my retirement, but she was still going strong last time I had her out of the box about 8yrs ago!

Hi Robin, must been a great to have had a saturday job at the model shop, a dream job for many. Sounds like you had great fun with you Jinty and much more to come I imagine. I was just watching a video the other week on Mr Snooze's channel with one of those Airfix 1001 five pole motors being put into a Jinty kzbin.info/www/bejne/i5zZmXeabLFpepI his following video was a conversion of the a tri-ang motor bogie in the Brush Type 2 with the armature from an Airfx motor. I had herd of these motors but not yet tried one myself. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment its hugely appreciated. Oscar

@@oscarpaisley I do enjoy these videos. Basically you built the layout we all dreamed of (including you I suspect) when we were kids. You know the ones in the track plans books and on the sleeves of the train sets, the ones we knew we or our parents would never be able to afford! Ah yes that was it thanks - the Airfix 1001 motor. I do wonder why they ever produced those since as far as I remember when they came out the only railway stuff they did were the old ex Kitmaster range. Later of course came the RTR class 31, Prairie tank, Royal Scot, Castle class and the rest of the Airfix model railway range. Bugger, I'm getting all nostalgic. Yep, at 16 it was my dream job. £5 for a days work and excellent for business since my first 5 weeks pay all went on my dream loco, a brand new Wrenn Clun Castle, a small fortune at £25!!

Hello Oscar, a very nice little Jinty, I don't have an example of this retooled version so excellent to see what it's like. You have certainly got it running well now. I wonder if those are the original brushes or if someone had fitted new before you got it. I too agree about the clip fit body, what a worry everytime you try to remove it, I think some plastic definitely becomes more brittle with age so it's good all your clips are intact. Very interesting to see all the Jintys together at the end, the acetate version is wonderful. Best regards to you
@oscarpaisley4 жыл бұрын
Good Morning Mr Snooze, those brushes defiantly look a bit on the fresh side! and the carbon part itself look's to be larger than normal making the brushes hang at an unusual angle! The acetate Jinty is terrific and a lovely model to run. Thanks again for watching. Oscar

Love looking at your videos, takes me right back.

I think those late models based on the X03 were fantastic. Quiet, smooth, and capable of good crawl speed. I believe the body is still basically the same as the recent hornby jinty, although chassis changed at least twice. It may not be finescale, but especially in SDJR livery it still looks stunning. In fact I'd suggest the recent SDJR blue jinty is a true bargain buy.

Good morning Oscar, I have the very same model and they are indeed lovely runners. I also have the LBSC E2 which has the same chassis. When it comes to removing the bodies I use a small flat blade in the slot at the rear of the loco chassis I find it pops of whilst tilting forward quite easy. I've not got the service sheets so not seen the method they show at the front before. I have a few body shells from the earlier versions, the chassis are in pieces and the acetate shell I have is very warped. The next version has donated its buffers to a Wrenn Southern R1 which had lost one of its own.

Good morning Terry, I had been on the look out for one of these for some time and as you say there are many available with rather worn. This one looked ok on that auction site, the pictures were a bit dark and soft, it looked well used but not abused apart from the glued and broken vacuum pipes the finger makes were there but due to the lighting didn't really show there full extent! They must have sold these in the thousands I imagine and they were picked up and played with as intended I suppose probably being one of the models at the lower end of the range price wise and parents being prepared to take the risk, Hooking many into the hobby. Great review of this loco Oscar . The Jinty has indeed been a true stalwart of the Triang and subsequently rebranded eras . In particular I was quite impressed with the 70`s upgrade that this model received (having been used to the earlier variants ) but in the continuing trend towards detail over durability , I am not surprise about some of the concerns that you raised .

Hi William great to hear you enjoyed the video.It definitely a great looking upgrade to the earlier long running and much loved model. Hi Oscar, I’ve always loved a Jinty as it was the first loco I was ever given- I remember as though it was yesterday the day trip to London (the excitement of arriving in the cathedral- like Waterloo, my hand aching from writing down all of the numbers of the 4SUB units!) and taking a trip (on a proper Routemaster bus) to Hamleys. After spending literally hours looking at the huge Scalextric and model railway displays I was treated to a bright red Jinty with the words ‘British Railways’ emblazoned across the sides. This wasn’t a Triang or Hornby version but a die cast toy from Budgie I think- do you or your viewers remember them? It had moving coupling rods so was great fun but I do remember the disappointment when I finally got my own OO train set to find the wheels didn’t fit on the track!! Happy Times- also loved the loco line up at the end of the video:-))
@RobA5004 жыл бұрын
Hi Ned. Yes I have a bright red die cast Jinty as well not sure if its the same one but sounds familiar. Yes its wheel spacing is too narrow for OO track, probably just as well because it would have shorted out the system if left on track.
@NedPooleD8184 жыл бұрын
Hi Rob, Sound like the one- it was a great push along loco to go with the corgi, dinky and matchbox cars of the time. Mine ended up painted rusty red round the back of the Airfix engine shed with ‘For Scrap’ written in Tippex on the sides!!!
@richardmcgowan63834 жыл бұрын
Yes, the red push-along BRITISH RAILWAYS Jinty! I've still got one somewhere. It came in a yellow cardboard box, which sadly I don't have anymore. I think this is the toy engine you see at the start of every episode of Bagpuss - Emily has one in the window of her shop. If they were still made, I'd buy one to put on my shelf.

I still have my Jinty from I guess about 1969, with smoke, it's been repainted since and has wire handrails, vacuum pipes from guitar strings and crushed coal from the SVR in the bunker. One of the first detailing jobs I ever did when I was about 14. I decided it would be a good shed "pet", so it sports bright red coupling rods and apart from some very light weathering applied to the running gear is ex works gloss black. No lining though as this was beyond my capabilities at the time. Still love it and it runs well with an (I think Airfix?) 5-pole motor which was available as a straight swap for the X04 at the time. I did some primitive compensation on the chassis as presented in an article in Tailway
@rogerking72584 жыл бұрын
Hi Oscar, your late sixties model is the same as the one I had, with see through wheels, but I received mine in the early sixties, probably 1963; so perhaps mine was one of the first. I couldn't agree more about cheap and nasty clip fitted bodies. All my early stuff was screwed together and all my later stuff is screwed together. Perhaps Tr-iang/Hornby went through a "British Leyland" period in the seventies and eighties where they only produced poor quality products! By the way, I always thought that the Jinty was the very epitome of a tank engine.
@oscarpaisley4 жыл бұрын
Good morning Roger, i’m definitely not keen on this business of clipping models together. I’m sure the plastic deteriorates over time and becomes more brittle. Oscar Paisley here is the story Oscar I heard ot from Barrie Davis a few years ago in one of his videos. In 1948 the big four were merged to make British railways but they didn’t have a totem to put on the locomotives so for some years locomotives went around with the words ‘British railways’ on the tender then in the 50s they made the first totem which is called the cycling lion or the type 1 totem, in the late 50s British rail thought they were getting more modern so they applied for a totem to be made for them by the royal college of heralds which makes heraldry which is very important material because it has to be designed and approved by the state before one can be used so British rail submitted a design to the royal college of heralds with the lion facing the direction the locomotive would travel in but it was only the left side one that was made and approved so when BR realised they thought that they would reverse it so it would look athletically nice on the right hand side but when people realised BR got into a lot of trouble for this and the story is that it went right to the high courts and even lord longford got involved and in the end BR had to get rid of the right hand side one and use the left hand side one that was made for them on the right hand side which is why on most models you see the lion facing backwards on the right side of the locomotive. This model of the unity would be depicting one that had the incorrect heraldry design on it I hope I have explained it well
