The Bachmann USA Dock Tank is the same class of locomotive (US Army Transportation Corps S100) as the Rivarossi model, but the Bachmann is modeled after one that remained in the UK rather than one that ended up in Italy as depicted by the Rivarossi version. The two of them together offer an interesting comparison of HO and OO scales, since it's not very often that you see the same prototype modeled in both scales.

The S100s were used by the Southern Railway in Southampton docks. Their very short wheelbase for a 0-6-0 design made them particularly useful on the very tight curves accessing wharves and warehouses.

Interesting. Without having experience with Rivarossi ourselves, we’ve always understood that they weren’t a premium quality brand; somewhere in the middle. Below Märklin/Trix, Fleischman/Roco, above Lima, Jouef. Why can European brands be so expensive. Well, we suggest you to check out Piko... ‘Everything for everyone’ as they claim. Other than that, I can only review what I’ve seen. Tons of your OO reviews have shown exceptional high failure rates… Almost always something is rather slapdash or quite wrong, doesn’t function as intended and/or needs to be corrected or returned. Märklin, Roco, Piko…, you do pay for their RTR high consistency. Failures and sloppiness are quite exceptional. Every time I see production infrastructure from an OO manufacturer, I can only review it as lacking thorough investment in automation, high precision and built-in assuring consistency. Do have a look at Märklin production, Roco (both in Eastern Europe) and Piko (own factory in China). All super clean and logically organised with a very high grade of automation and quality controls. Staff are being paid well on top. The British consumer traditionally is most concerned about price. Price for them is almost everything whilst expecting the most features and quantity. Their investors are quite reluctant as well and are mostly driven by the highest possible financial yields. European counterparts traditionally expect a flawless assembled product out of the box, is more willing to pay for that, and their investors do invest in state of the art production. Each do lead to their own compromises of course, and evidently the OO market is small to justify mass investments. This is probably the reason why Hornby is after TT, so they can cover a worldwide market and benefit from economies of scales. As for Rivarossi; a middle of the road brand suffering from Hornby pricing, we thought Sam.

FS means "Ferrovie dello Stato" and it mean "State's Railways" in italian, while Gr. stands for Group, and it was used for all of the italian steam locomotives before diesel and electric locomotives becomes a thing... Indeed, every diesel or electric locomotive didn't used the word Gr., but instead they was grouped with the words D for diesel, and E for electric, follow up by the model number

The S100 is the same loco as the USA Dock tank made in model form by Bachmann. Very interesting review. It would be good to see a follow 'back to back' comparison with the Bachmann, which would also show the difference between OO and HO scales well! By the way have you ever come across a Rivarossi Royal Scot? Tender mounted motor with a carden shaft drive to the loco driving wheels - very interesting design and mine runs really well!

Nice review, I knew it was only a matter of time before you got your hands on one of these. This is one of my favorite locomotives and rivarossi did an excellent job, in fact, everything from modern rivarossi has seemed to be a hit. Something I'm surprised you didn't mention was the scale. These are HO scale locomotives, since they're intended for the European and American market. Rivarossi did tool American versions which have knuckle couplers, footboards, and operating headlights. I have one and it's excellent. I love how solid the mechanism is and how easy it would be to chip and add sound. There is even a molded speaker baffle on the cab roof and speaker mounts on the board. I definitely agree on the price. It's too much. These would be on sale for $50 back in 2014 before all the American versions were discontinued. I sure hope they bring them back because I'd love to get some more!

This, despitethe Italian Label on the Box, is an " undec" version. The FS Class 831-xxx ( xxx is Loco Number within Class.) a quite detailed: Red Buffer Beams, Red Wheel Centers, etc. Compare with Pre-Hornby Acquisition RR. Also, since Hornby Acquisition, Scale of RR has moved from 1:80 (Made in Italy, original RR tooling for Euro Models) and I:87 ( USA Models) to Made in China 1:87 Models...( New Tooling). But the H-RR S-100 caters more for the USA with 1:87. Would be nice to see it in Proper FS Livery and Numbering, like the original RR 1:80 FS 835 class, and FS 850 class ( the "8" signifying a 060( 030 Euro) Tank, and second digit a era sequence indicator, and 3rd digit Design designator. The FS had unused digits for Future acquisitions, such as the S100 during WWII ( 1944 onwards) Originally fitted with Westinghouse Air Brakes for Europe, the Britain and Some North African ones were changed to Vacuum Brakes before entering UK service, as a general " Shunter" in Yards, not just "Docks" or " Industrial". My 10 years in Italy gave me a wide experience with the last surviving Steamer operations, (1974-83) and the then Range of RR 1:80 FS Models. From Australia, moved from HO to On3,5 1:48, scratch built.( Queensland Government Railways, 1930s-1940s, as close to Proto. as possible, with my 73 y.o. hands and eyes.) Great review, Sam, of the shown model. The difference between Bachman OO ( 1:76) and H-RR ( 1:87) BECOMES OBVIOUS!! Use the Bachmann for UK-themed OO layouts, and the H-RR for Euro themed HO themed Layouts. As to any non-conforming RR 1:80 old Models, consign them to "Collector" Status. Cheers.

Be fair, David; as built, the only 'livery' the prototypes had was primer and topcoat to stop them rusting, and a basic marking, such as 'Transportation Corps, US Army' and a number; in the case of those used in Britain, grey paint and 'W↑D' plus a number. In view of the dire financial situation in post-War Italy, I'd be astonished if they'd done anything more than shown on this model - even on their express engines, let alone a humble shunter! As regards price, though - I agree.

Yeah, an Italian steamer at last ! Not the most representative, I would have prefer you to review the Gr. 835 by the same manufacturer but, with a retailer's price of 207 €/GBP 178, that might certainly have you deter to do the buy... But mine is worth this price ! For the price, just talking about this one : the French manufacturer REE had announced an SNCF version of the same class of engine for 240 € / GBP 207, but you have directional lights on their model, as announced. There is a lack of details on this one, and the absence of directional lights, my Rivarossi Gr. 835 is far better overall for a not so higher price (but no sprung buffers on her ! Just checked right now...). Overall, you are on the standard pricing range for Europeans HO locomotives, the last I've bought was a 0-8-0 tank by Tillig for 300 € / GBP 259. A real budget model is the Roco BR 80 0-6-0, around the 100 € / GBP 85 mark, with a five poles motor and a flywheel of course. This model by Rivarossi is not the best they have, my Gr. 835 is far better on every point, but it's over the 200 € / GBP 170 mark... For the couplers, it is the usual behavior of the HO buckle couplers : works if they want... I prefer the UK tension lock couplers, more reliable. And the Kadee ones overall for HO/OO. For the European overall ratio quality/price, you have something just slightly above a basic model like the Roco BR 80, at a RRP too close from far better models like my Gr. 835 (also an Italian 0-6-0), and agree with you, that does not fit. For GBP 117/136 €, it's still too high for me, I would not recommend a buy over the 110 €/GBP 95 mark. If you want to test other European models, try some Roco ones, like the BR 86 outside the budget-oriented BR 80, or some Piko like the BR 78. Or you can try the Tillig BR 92 0-8-0 tank. I have those models, and I can vouch for their overall good price/quality ratio. But expect to hit the GBP 200/250 mark, but you get your money back on everything else with them !

Starting with a blank piece of paper the designer spent 4 weeks and came up with this. They were immediately put into mass production and shipped to Europe. Says friend Chris Eden-Green on his channel. Frederick Hawksworth of the GWR became interested in them as a modern version of the usual Pannier tank. Resulting in the 1500 class of 10 Locos. A model coming out next year we hope. David and Lily.

The thing to note about Marklin, they are digital only! Everything is digital, they gave up on AC analog in the late 1980s and use digital on 3 rail track. They do make 2 rail under the trix brand. But they use the same digital system. The Marklin MS and CS controllers do Two and 3 rail, and run digital proton mm2 ( old Marklin digital ), DCC, and MFX/ M4 protocol. All the digital systems in on controller. They do everything in a limited one time series ( that’s why so expensive ) very limited and rare. They sell spares for almost everything and also sell upgrade kits for all vintage models as wells to make them dcc and such ( involves changing of motor to dc, very easy ). If you have any questions about Marklin/ trix / Europeans brands just let me know!!

'European loco'??? 1. The UK is Europe too. 2. The thing is made in China. So UK made locomotives are 'European' too and this one isn't because the Chinese made it. The only thing really European is perhaps the origin of the real engine. Even if you mean that, UK is still European so all UK engines are European too.

The UK has long considered itself separate from Europe. We're part of the European Continent, but only technically. We've been an island for all of recorded history and only had a land connection for a brief period in human pre-history. Despite German-descended kings and French conquerors, we're also culturally distinct as well (again due to being an island).

I see it has Hornby pricing applied, even if they are Rivarossi branded. I never understood why EU/UK models were so expensive compared to US models when they often are quite similar with mechanism and detailing. I do agree that the packaging is really nice on this one. It would survive shipping and the paper work is quite good. I personally think this is still quite an expensive loco, it looks well made and the detailing is not horrible, but I still think that it should be a little cheaper, even with the diecast parts. The flat plastic look just kills it a bit for me. I was thinking sub 100 even before you said that :)

Some of my Rivarossi locos' does have its axles painted/covered, so on this loco could be "prototypical" not be painted. But yes; this brand is (was) known for its good mechanism, but very average detailing, and its only (relatively) expensive since Hornby took it over (like with Liliput under Bachmann), so... I do recommend a Roco loco (just not a starter set one), to try, but be ware of a huge detail-bag, since some manufactures don't trust that their workers can do a "spotless" job.

I love the level of detail and the high engineering standard of the model, but I find it to be very underpowered for yard work with American rolling stock (which, again, I don't know how one would go about improving). Another model you might want to look into is a Roco S160. Its another USATC design that ended up all over the UK and Europe thanks to the war. Roco's model is also nicely engineered, but heinously expensive. And, inexplicably, they made it impossible to modify for use with US rolling stock without permanent modification

Marklin is 3 rail AC but they have made 2 rail DC under Marklin "HAMO" is the key word. But Marklin owns TRIX now and almost all of Marklin's 3 rail AC trains are in 2 rail DC just under the name if TRIX.

Hey Sam, I think I found the outlier locomotive to the 0-6-0 theme, it’s the Brown 0-4-0 Caen. Am I correct? Or am I remembering wrong?

For the total price point when having it setup for regular operation, add the following costs: 30 euro for a DCC decoder 4 euro for locomotive crew 2 euro for some decent couplers (as the ones that come with the model are usually trash) For the unpainted axle centers, the one preserved at SGB has exposed axles

Cute little engines aren’t they? There’s a reason they’re not very decorated and that’s simply because of who they work for. The US army really doesn’t like very colorful machines. The s100 and USA dock tanks are actually the same type of locomotive

You are right, märklin is 3 rail (ac) but Trix is the same company of märklin and they produce the same models in 2 rail (dc). Than Roco, Brawa and other company’s produce the most dc but something for Märklin in ac too also not everything in Europe for ac 😀 but the prices are really expensive nothing under 250€ ……

A good review, but i have to say that for OO layout, it's the Bachmann version every time... That 0.5mm difference really does show when you run the two tanks together...

Re. the smooth running at speed, Sam, that's more than could be said for the prototypes! And having fired them on the Kent & East Sussex Railway, I know whereof I speak . . . In fairness to the design, though; Col. Howard Hill (US Army) designed them for shunting in docks, and to give them the widest route availability, he built them to the British loading gauge - so they could be run in on British lines before shipping to Europe - and with a wheelbase of only 10ft (a foot shorter than even an Austerity 0-6-0), so they could get round the tightest curves to be found in docks. That was why the Southern Railway bought 15 of them (one for spares), post-War, and used them to replace the utterly worn-out Adams B4 0-4-0s in Southampton Docks - where the S100s had no problems dealing with the heaviest boat trains and the sharpest curves. But, as preserved railways found out when running trains at 25mph, the 29ft 6" overall length and 10ft wheelbase made them rock and roll all over the shop on any but the smoothest track! Interesting to note, re. the number still in regular use; when Hill designed both the S100 and the S160, he was quoted as saying that he didn't care if they fell to pieces in a couple of years, as by that time, "the war will be won, and they can be scrapped." As it was, the S100s and S160s were an absolute gift from the Gods as far as the railways in both Britain and Europe were concerned in the aftermath of WWII, when so much of our loco stock was either destroyed or utterly worn out.

Well look at the facts. Millions of American model railroaders buying multiple paint schemes. That’s why in Europe this 0-6-0t. You can literally get a Bachman model of this much cheaper but it doesn’t have the buffers.

Hmmmm This is a mixed bag, I know you like your tiny trains and you reviewed many that have better detail, cheaper and run just aa good Simple design and a fairly decent runner, what where they thinking about the plastic pistons ? And the price Is way over priced , definitely a sub £100 model That being said, It runs well and looks nice , just a few niggles I have with this

Some of the European models have always been expensive when compaired to our UK models. Some brands where/are making models that have much better features and better quality then the stuff in the UK. I have had some German outling steam locos in the past, the had excerlent detail, run beautifuly, had working lights, close coupled tenders right out of the box. I have Roco .Electric single car unit, dating from the 1980s, it can run fro the track or from the overheaad power lines, you can not see the motor, and not only does it have a driver figure, but a full set of passengers as well. The likes of Roco and Fleischmann were and stillare superb comapaired to what we were and sometimes still are offered on the UK market.

The explanation of the price is very simple. The markets, except maybe in Germany, are much smaller than the UK market. The worst offender is Spain, because as in real life we have a different gauge, that means our real locomotives are purpose built for Spain. So the models must also be purpose built, and there's not many hobbyist over here. An even if the molds are shared, as they need to customize for every country, costs will inevitably go up.

Hope you've got my home address and postcode email. I've thought of a very crazy experiment to try with my giant NEM coupling. Using my Minnie Mouse dressing gown belt, I'll attach the NEM pocket to one end, and tie the other end round my left ankle. The coupling hook will be attached to my LEGO coaches, and I'll walk slowly backwards and try to pull the LEGO coaches with me along the LEGO track. I'm embarrassed about trying it. Should I try it? I'll pretend to be Foxcote Manor starting off tender-first. Also, I have a personalized KZbin Channel T-shirt of my own, and I'd like to snitch your video intro, if you don't mind.

what would worry me most of all with this model is the fact that it is destined to fail... you simply cannot put metal parts in moving contact with plastic and expect the plastic to stand up to the metal without inordinate wear! And yes the price is absurd! I would put this loco at around £60-£70 at best. it is seriously lacking in detail and the way its been put together is just amateur! All in all Sam, excellent review.... if a little lenient in my opinion!!!!
