A really easy way to weather any type of vehicle piece of rolling stock. No airbrush, just Humbrol Black Wash, thinners and 3 basic weathering powders. Dark Earth, Smoke and Light Rust. Some cheap make up brushes, modelling paint brushes and cotton buds.
If it’s your first time weathering, practice on a piece of scrap or something inexpensive. Try to keep it light and build up intensity and remember dirt gets into all the nooks and crannies of a piece of stock.

Now, that was an interesting video, I'll certainly be watching it again with my grandson ready for when we get round to having a go at weathering...cheers James 🙂👍

Watching your video after heading in after building and painting a goods shed, and come to realise how good we are for the environment, every modeller seems to have oddles of recycled pots 😂

I don’t have a takeout very often, or much pre-made food but always save the pots or off others. They are so useful for modelling. The food containers are ideal for storing bits in, scenic materials leak out of bags! Thin plastic pots make ideal paint mixing cups and with a lid or plastic bag and elastic band (dropped by posties) Acrylic can stay usable for weeks. Spice jars make excellent shakers for doing scatters etc. 😁

@@HighFell totally. I've got loads of those plastic boxes from washing tablets, great for storing odds and sods and they make them smell great as an added bonus 😂

If you are a bit nervous, have a practice on something that doesn’t matter 😁

Excellent, interesting about the handling/sealing as I would most likely want to seal the weathering in.

I first weathered my 10t tanks and the vent vans, they were done probably a year ago now and tbh Garry, the tanks have had a fair bit of handling trying to improve the running and I like the way the effects have developed. Sealing does stop any smudging and if careful it shouldn’t interfere with running in anyway and it will ‘tone down’ any weathering applied. I’m doing locos as they come out of warranty.

@@HighFell thanks Matt, I may pluck up courage to do a van but it scares me. I have no problem or worries about doing an ex works finish but then altering that does.

Have you got something in your spares box/scrap to have a practice on. The technique I use is easier to get ‘most of it’ off. With all the skills you have I am sure you will be able to sail through this no problem 😁

@@HighFell thankfully yes, I have a few spare wagon bodies where I used their chassis's for other wagons so if it works I can swop them. If it doesn't then I have not lost a decent model.

All in all a very good tutorial. Do you not weather the chassis and bogies as these areas really pick up the dirt and grime. The yellow hub caps on the bogies look a little to stark wouldn't they be discoloured by grease oil etc

Yes, I use a little bit of light rust in the springs etc, and a tiny mix of smoke or dark earth on the under frame but I aways try and do each one differently. The one I videoed only got a very light black wash over so the axle box covers looked ‘cleaner’ than some of the others. With the yellow axle box covers, it’s always worth remembering that the yellow denotes a roller bearing. These need much less servicing and not topping up with oil so traditionally appear cleaner 😁
