First timer, I just caught the European hornet in the wall video and thought it was a one off beekeeper video as I hadn't read the channel name. The chicken popped up talking, she was like feed me Seymour. At first the way it was going it seemed like he was just doing his thing with the bugs - hadn't crossed his mind and the chicken is sweating making promises for a taste like a barfly in the bathroom. I'm like he's gotta know, fling em to the chicken, then he does, then it was a grizzly grub feast. I was ready to high five the dog, that's suspense. Now I know, I'll recommend the channel to the chickens out in the yard.

today while out on my mail route i found a jellow jacket comb on the ground (it was soaking wet so i think someone just took a hose to the nest). i noticed a few larvae in cells so i got one out and looked at how far along she was. it was super cool to see the different progressions of each one. i thought it was pretty nifty and I have to say thanks to your channel I knew what I was looking at. before finding you I would have just left it alone. Man, document those nests where you see stuff diverging from what the research papers say. Post the pictures and the information. That stuff is important - when the research and current theses are downright wrong, they need to be corrected (whether they want to or not - getting academia to accept correction is a whole headache unto itself depending on the field). Thank you for all you've posted by the way - this stuff is all just fascinating. Btw, just a thought - perhaps the earwigs predate the pupating adults instead of the larvae because the former are inactive, while the larvae are active and somewhat aggressive. The pupae will likely be nonreactive as they are consumed while the larvae might draw attention (who knows whether or not alarm pheromones are involved). All speculation of course.
@Kinkajou10155 жыл бұрын
It could be a species trait that the researchers didn't study and thus why they missed it. Or maybe they had the wasps in a lab and controlled environment where it never happened but in nature it does. I agree, any proof that shows different from research papers needs to be documented for correcting the science.
@HornetKingOfficial5 жыл бұрын
I believe that any research that is said to be facts regarding nature, should never use claim 100% thats the way it is. The papers I have read through the Penn State entomology had specifically stated that wasp queens WILL NOT lay eggs in previously occupied cells. To use a definitive like that for nature is ill advised. And captive and natural nests should be studied as well to compare the differences to be even more thorough.
@ARavingLobster5 жыл бұрын
As well as that, adaptation sometimes (read: often) is the name of the game in nature. There is a chance that 99% of the time in normal undistrupted situations a Queen wouldn't have reason to reuse a cell, however in this nest it may have been a requirement due to the earwig infestation. They may have been reused due to those older cells being secure in that section of the hive, or due to the structural integrity of several of the other cells being compromised by the earwigs. They may not reuse cells under normal circumstances but may if the situation calls for them to adapt and do so. That may be the reason we saw it here, however research certainly needs to reflect that. Like hypothetically what is a hive supose to do if all of the unused cells are compromised but the older, already used cells aren't? Just stop laying and die off? I imagine not.

That drop into the tub was amazing. And the Rocky victory pose was priceless. A few things I've thought of while watching a few videos if you don't mind answering: Have you considered making some modifications to a tub so you have a hole in the side that you could latch your vacuum onto and maybe put a LED light ring around the hole? Normally it would be covered but you could hook the vacuum to it, uncover it, turn on the light, and then jostle the tub and the nest inside to try and get some of the flyers that you didn't get earlier. They fly towards the ring light, then get sucked into the vacuum hole. Maybe you could even jury rig some toggleable LEDs on the nozzle of the vacuum tube for when you're in tight quarters or for such a tub hole system. Alternatively you could have just a small little hole that they can't fly out of and just pump smoke into the tub to hopefully pacify them before opening it up. Have you thought of getting a generator that you could use to power your vacuum when you aren't near power outlets? Like that second nest. Do you tell your clients you'll be feeding the grubs to your chickens? I'm sure they would be happy, I would be anyway if a pest removal guy told me he fed the pests to his pets or used them for compost. Have you thought of having two vacuums set up? One you would have stationary where they would fly in and out of (probably a stronger one than you have now) and the second would be for getting precision pulling off of combs and swarming around in the room/area (the one you have now).

Have you ever tried placing wood of various colours close to a young queen who's just building her nest? It'd be interesting to see which types of wood she chooses, and which patterns emerge once her nest is matured. Bald faced hornet's nests are already works of art. They'd be even more spectacular if built from various types of wood.

I love to see how loving you are to the chickens, but I'm here for the wasps and hornets. The chickens are a welcome extra. In arizona, maricopa, bald faced hornets are a massive problem, unlike where you are, there doesn't seem to be as much predation towards them. Arizona has all sorts of stinging insects, however Africanised bees and bald faced hornets are the ones that scare the majority of people.

I don't know what's so satisfying about watching you pluck the larvae from the cells. It's kind of like watching Dr. Pimple Popper on tv. I can't wait to see what comes out...

These videos are amazing. Such simplicity in such a complicated time. The chickens and squirrel are amazing.

Okay, this was interesting. The video sent me down a rabbit hole reading about earwigs. I used to get annoyed with them when I would climb a maple tree in my yard as a kid, but I had no idea they could invade a wasp nest. I have a new respect for the earwig now.
