I agree with Rob about Logan, he is definitely the victim of having a dark past but he passed off that generational trauma to his kids. It's almost like the meaner he is to his kids the more they want to impress him. He knows exactly what each child needs for them to do exactly what he wants them to do.

I LOVE YOU, ROB! And yes, I'm talking about the beggining of the video where you were discussing if what Shiv did was cheating or not... Like, it's funny how ppl act differently when a man acts like that and a when it's a woman doing it the judgment is way heavier... It's not about agreeing with Shiv, it's just a perspective about the giant difference of POVs depending on the case (or gender). And I said ily because you always bring up great arguments to the table and this is very good for provoking and promoting reflections on complex subjects like these. Anyways, love the complexity of this show and love the channel!!!

Right! I don’t need Shiv to be a “good” person or likable because I don’t think any of the people on this show are likable, they’re charismatic but I would not like them if I knew them. It’s just weird to me how much hate Shiv gets when this is a show full of awful people.

This episode is such a brilliant and accurate depiction of dysfunctional families and especially narcissistic parents. Just unable to empathise with anyone or simply admit mistakes. His own view of reality and actions is so twisted that he pretends all he’s ever done was for his children when it actually couldn’t be further from the truth. I mean he’s verbally and emotionally abusing them left, right and centre. I can’t even picture him ever telling them that he loves them or is proud of them.

This show brilliantly portrays power dynamics. Tom has power over Greg, Shiv has power over Tom, and Logan has power over Shiv. And all of them abuse that power throughout the show.
@caribbeanadams3345 Жыл бұрын
eh that's not totally accurate. tom has multiple opportunities to tell on greg and doesn't. out of all the relationships in the show theirs are the most consistent. this agenda to make tom seem like he just like the roys when he can't get away with the things they do is ridiculous.
@SnailHatan Жыл бұрын
@@caribbeanadams3345Tom gets away with everything that he possibly can. The fact that he can’t do as much as the Roys means nothing. He abuses what power he has at damn near every chance he gets. Same as everyone else

Without any spoilers, I’d reckon that Logan’s scars symbolize what this show is truly about at it’s core: INTERGENERATIONAL TRAUMA. And what Kendall said about Logan “being jealous of what he has given his kids” does hold quite a lot of water. It’s true. Logan cannot handle it, because he knows that every one of children’s faults is a subsequential byproduct of the cage that he built around them. The scars symbolize the suffering, abuse, blood sweat and tears that Logan has spilled and suffered to build this empire, so you understand why he’s so quick to jump to emotional high points (see: his outrage at Shiv for pursuing her own path separate from her father’s control or his fury at Kendall last episode) when his kids start to seem like they take this all for granted or aren’t 24/7 appreciative & fiercely loyal to their father. I think about this quote from NYT regarding Logan Roy’s relationship with his children and Waystar: “In the case of the Roy children, who have suffered their father’s abuse their whole lives, that security has taken the form of endless amounts of money and power that might seal them off from anything objectionable. They live in a luxurious snow globe world where they have all of the very finest things. Yet the money that affords them such a heightened lifestyle has also sealed them inside the snow globe with a father who terrorizes them.” Deep down, Logan does love his kids. But he is a cruel, vindictive, greedy man who sees every social interaction as act of commerce. He simply cannot view things like family discourse, relationships, or his personal relationships with his kids as anything other than an exchange of material goods/capital for another. His kids are being nice to him because they need X from him, his coworkers are on his side because in the future they’ll request Y from him, and the list goes on. Logan has put himself into a position where he is the single man who wields the most power in the company, like Zeus with a brain addled by old age refusing to let go of his deathgrip on the lightning that he continually hovers over his children’s heads in order to bait them into doing what he pleases - while knowing full well that he has no intention to release his iron-clad grip. It is impossible to have a regular civil relationship with him when you have full knowledge that he is wielding all of the power in practically every situation. Just look at how carefully his coworkers and subordinates tread grounds, just his stoic presence in the room during the board meeting was enough to terrify everyone into silence and subordination. And if that’s how utterly terrified the employees who work for him are, imagine his children who grew up with that 10ft tall bulletproof monster hovering over them like a vengeful wraith.

Its kinda wild to say Shiv is selfish for choosing who to work for in her professional life. Logan loves to preach that business isn't personal but then cant do the same when his kids make decisions for themselves. Also it always confuses me when people have such a problem with shiv cheating butthen don't seem to have the same energy with other characters faults up to this point( Tom covering up murder and rape along with abusing his authority with gregg , logan emotionally abusing his children, + other things that have yet to happen).

I think this cheating is by far one of the chillest bad attitudes in this show compared to what all of them have been doing. It's not like Tom is a saint.

you guys didn't include it, but at the beginning of the episode, the kids joke about Logan not being able to swim, and you see the scars at the end. it points to Logan having a very abusive childhood and also the lengths Logan went to hide it from his kids, the whole lie of him not being able to swim... so his kids never see his scars

A gold digger is more into the money and material wealth tho. Tom already has that because he comes from money ( just not the level of the Roys). What Tom values is the prestige and power that comes with being associated with the Roys, which is something he doesnt have at this point. He is an outsider to the family , so he'll eat shit if it means he will be in the good graces of whoever the power holder is which is why he was flip flopping with Kendall and Logan.

Those scars a really nice subtle way to remind everyone, that the abuse is often a cycle and its very difficult to get out of it. We could even say that the fact that Shiv and Ken have both proven to be shit romantic partners (Ken leaving coke on the tablets of his kids, Shiv cheating) could be called a new generation manifestation of that cycle. They ar enot outright abusive like their father, but do have extremely toxic traits that hurt the people around them...and well Roman, is Roman.
