Imagine them covering the Balkan Wars: "Hello, and welcome to the News at When. When? The 1990s, when the people of Southeastern Europe decided that they couldn't live with each other anymore and started to go their separate ways. Here to explain is Bob Hale, with the Yugoslavia Report." ... "So Lord Carrington comes up with this new plan called the, well, Carrington Plan, which will make all six republics independent. However, the Serbian President, Slobodan Milošević, doesn't want to dissolve Yugoslavia, so he refuses to sign. Guess he 'Slobodan' that idea!" ... "So by now, all that's left of Yugoslavia is the republics of Serbia and Montenegro, and that is the end of that. BUT NOT FOR LONG! Because in 2003 the country decides to change its name to, er, Serbia and Montenegro, and that is the end of that. BUT NOT FOR LONG! Because in 2006, Montenegro finally catches up with everyone else and decides that it now wants independence after all, so Serbia and Montenegro divides into... well, Serbia and Montenegro. And that really is the end of that. BUT NOT FOR LONG! Because just two years later, Kosovo declares independence from Serbia, only this time Serbia isn't quite so keen on losing yet more territory and refuses to recognise it, and that really, really is the end of that. OR IS IT? After all, this is the Balkans, where everyone hates each other, so who knows what will happen next? Back to you, Sam."

Canada was conquered from the French in 1759. Canada and Australia were still dominions of the Crown until after the Second World War. Their constitutions were not patriated from Britain until the 1980's.
@johnbarham64069 ай бұрын
True. Some of this is up in the air, though. (For example, part of Canada was settled by Britons prior to the French and Indian War. Also, Australia and Canada were technically independent following the Statue of Westminster in 1931, but as you point out, not fully independent until the 1980s.)

actually, it wasn't until 1949 that Ireland in British law was recognized as a republic. Ireland was a free state called Eire in official British documents until then. Irish people see the beginning of their country at the signing of the treaty and The Republic of Ireland act 1948 which declared Ireland a republic. The British with the passing of the Ireland act 1949 formally recognized Ireland as an independent Republic separate from the United Kingdom.

Wales was part of England, also *cough* east india company, also all of south africa wasn’t claimed straight away, and Ireland wasn’t even in the empire in the 40s, it left britain, not the empire, in 1922, ulster remaining British, however, it became a republic, not a dominion in 1948. Also, Canada and South africa were granted home rule, not really british. Canada was gained after the war with france, not looked upon, we got the indian reserve and florida, so...., also , Ireland became part of Britain in 1801. Not before.. Also, Iraq was granted independence in 1930s, and british middle east was independent straight after WW2.

Ireland declared itself a republic in 1948 with the Republic of Ireland act. However, it wasn't until 1949 with Ireland act that Britain recognized it as a free Republican state so that could be the discrepancy there, British show so follows British Law
