Lots of stuff in British Education Is very geared towards us winning. They always teach you about the stuff we win but never the stuff we lose, and makes that the British Empire was always doing amazing things. Like you learn about the Spanish Armada in 1588 but never the English Armada which failed just as much in 1589. Or you learn about the fact we had the biggest empire in the world, but not the fact that that we did “horrible things” to our colonies (most). I do wish we learnt about other European conflicts, but no it has to be all about Britain. Instead you have to do research yourself.

Imagine him covering the Balkan Wars: "Hello, and welcome to the News at When. When? The 1990s, when the people of Southeastern Europe decided that they couldn't live with each other anymore and started to go their separate ways. Here to explain is Bob Hale, with the Yugoslavia Report." ... "So Lord Carrington comes up with this new plan called the, well, Carrington Plan, which will make all six republics independent. However, the Serbian President, Slobodan Milošević, doesn't want to dissolve Yugoslavia, so he refuses to sign. Guess he 'Slobodan' that idea!" ... "So by now, all that's left of Yugoslavia is the republics of Serbia and Montenegro, and that is the end of that. BUT NOT FOR LONG! Because in 2003 the country decides to change its name to, er, Serbia and Montenegro, and that is the end of that. BUT NOT FOR LONG! Because in 2006, Montenegro finally catches up with everyone else and decides that it now wants independence after all, so Serbia and Montenegro divides into... well, Serbia and Montenegro. And that really is the end of that. BUT NOT FOR LONG! Because just two years later, Kosovo declares independence from Serbia, only this time Serbia isn't quite so keen on losing yet more territory and refuses to recognise it, and that really, really is the end of that. OR IS IT? After all, this is the Balkans, where everyone hates each other, so who knows what will happen next? Back to you, Sam."

I won't bother starting a long debate. Nevertheless, I will say that the winter did play a significant role in Napoleon's defeat, heck one would argue that before the winter things were going swimmingly (the battle at Borodino might've been anticlimactic, but he held the field). Besides that, he almost didn't start a war. Almost every conflict he was in was started by another world power, heck he even inherited a few conflicts from the revolutionary wars in France and he was a brilliant general.

One thing I don't understand about the history of Napoleon is the praise he gets as a general. He was good at gunnery, and got really lucky a few times when it mattered. Some of his early defeats were because of major strategic blunders like charging an enemy retreating into a valley without scouting for ambushers on the surrounding hills. And then there's Russia - admittedly, he was largely doomed from the start, but he failed to recognize the danger when he could still withdraw.

King Louis Napoleon of Holland was actually not a bad king. He risked his marriage because he didn’t want to leave. His wife took his son back to Paris while he stayed behind to rule. He actively helped the people during disasters and defended their interests. He even learned to speak Dutch, albeit with a heavy accent.

here is something funny about Napoleon. When he returned to France from exile on the isle of Elba, Napoleon (and the 1000 Old Guard that had accompanied him) marched towards Paris. Along the way they came across many French regiments who had been sent to stop him. Upon seeing their old General and Emperor, the soldiers started cheering and joined him on his march. By the time he had reached Paris, he had thousands of men at his side and the Bourbon king had fled (what a surprise....)............

You just said that winter still played an enormous part in Napoleon's defeat.Yes, they did take their plunder with them, and it weighed them down but they were screwed either way. In either case, remember Moscow was burnt to the ground, so there wasn't all that much winter clothing as the depots were burnt down as well, on specific instructions of the mayor of the city I might add,.

Fifth Coalition : declared by Austria and UK, won by Napoleon. Sixth Coalition : declared and won by Austria, Russia, Prussia, UK, Portugal and Sweden. Seventh Coalition : declared by Austria, Prussia, UK, Russia, won mainly by UK and Prussia. I declared less wars than his enemies...

It was customary for armies back then to stand up and fight, and besides the 600k men weren't in a single blob. There were multiple armies that had different duties. As for him getting to Moscow before winter, that much is true but the thing is that the Russians sort of burnt a good chunk of it down as part of their scorched earth policy,.RegardlessI will continue to blame the winter because it's one very important reason for his defeat as he didn't think he'd be along for so long without battle

Well yeah what do you expect? It's a British TV series so therefore, when they talk about history, of course its going to focus on Britain/England's victories and how it won certain battles and wars rather than concentrate on its defeats. And to be quite honest, if this was an American TV series you'd find exactly the same thing, same if it was a French series, there would still be this slight bias that people are complaining about.

That's because he didn't try to conquer Russia, that was Hitler's aim (lebensraum). The aim of the 1812 campaign, or Second Polish War, was to give the Russian army a good kicking and force the Tsar back into the alliance with France that Russia had signed in 1807. With the ultimate aim of forcing London to stop financing coalitions against France and her allies, and restoring peace to Europe as in 1802.

True, I guess if you expect an American TV series to be biased, you're not going to be surprised if it is, (though personally I find the American Civil War very interesting, and Im British!) and if you don't expect that from a British TV show, you'll be surprised when you see something that is, (I'm assuming it's a good thing that you don't expect our TV programmes to be biased) however saying that, I don't understand how this is seen as biased, its simplified yes, but not exactly biased.

Another of the myriad terms in politics for "alliance." There's a lot of variation in exactly what defines an alliance vs a coalition vs a confederacy vs a federation....*list goes on for a while,* but regardless, the point of them is all a group of independent powers teaming up to achieve something. Coalitions are generally military - teaming up with the guys you don't like to overpower the bigger guy you all hate more.

Nelson wasn't better than Napoleon. Napoleon was a General, Nelson an Admiral, they could never fight each other. Saying that Nelson won against Napoleon is like saying that Wellington won the Battle of Aboukir, this makes no sense. Nelson fought on sea, Napoleon did never fought on sea, french defeats ( or british victories if you prefer ) on sea are due to Admiral de Villeneuve. Btw, at St Helens, Napoleon said all he regrets is that he never found an equivalent to himself as Admiral.
