Why did they skip over the part when Edward the Elder, Athelflead and Athelstan conquered the Danelaw? It’s pretty significant because that was literally the unification of England…and they skipped over it. ☹️ WTH BBC? In case anyone is wondering, this occurred after Alfred the Great prevented the Vikings from conquering Wessex. Edward and Athelflead were his kids while Athelstan was his grandson who became the first king of England.

@finalfrontier001 Sort of. It gets a bit complicated. You have the Germanic Anglo Saxons and then you have the native British tribes; like the Britons, the Jutes, the Celts, the Picks, etc. Then you have the Vikings and the Normans (the French).
@micahrose964010 жыл бұрын
The Jutes were from Denmark (back then called Jutland), and the Normans were a mixture between Vikings and Frenchmen. They were mostly part Viking but spoke French. A small name change Norsemen=Norman.
@schanninla19739 жыл бұрын

@NormanZavlandid10669 жыл бұрын
IchBin Lecker The French language did exist during the early Norman period! The "Oaths of Strasbourg" were pledges of allegiance between Charles the Bald (King of West Francia) and Louis the German (King of East Francia). They were written in AD 842 in three different languages, one of which was Old French. The first "Norman" was Rollo the Viking. Charles the Simple (King of West Francia) gave him the first bit of land in AD 911 with the "Treaty of Saint-Clair-sur-Epte".

@Zeilond12 Why does it say here that Canute was King of Norway as well? Second a Jarl would be the equivalent of a Baron or even a Duke. Certainly not king. Third I have seen no indication that he was an "inexperienced" warrior or any existence of a Jarl Erik that was supporting Cnut.

It was really more to prevent European countries from being able to put down rebellions and hang on to their colonies. Monroe was basically saying that the Western Hemisphere was the United States' sphere of influence and we wouldn't tolerate European interference in the Americas. Fortunately, no one ever tested the ourresolve to enforce it because we didn't have a very large standing army and had a tiny navy.

***** Good one... Come to Lincolnshire and all the old guys are speaking some form of gaelic mixed with English, That's mainly because "Lindsey" was a Kingdom that was being run by a council with a Saxon King and a half council of Celts/Britons and a half Council of Englisc Untill they were overrun by the Northumbrians, The Kingdom was still independent while under Northumbrian Rule through a kind of process that made the King a in charge and not to mention the future baron married a Lindsey celtic tribes woman from StickIsle. Pretty cool story And then the Nordics came and added even more stuff into the fray Sadly its dying off because for some reason our accent is beginning to sound like downtown abbey crossed with Yorkshire accent it sounds so paffetic And weirdly its go some of the Irish stuff mixed in there too I'm trying to learn it my Nan, Grandad, Mum Know it, and well my Dad who's trying to learn it but he's Scottish and I think he's given up on it. I use it round the house but never outdoors, If I say anything of It in public people give me weird looks. I think my family could be one of the few still speaking it

Just imagine if they covered the Balkan Wars: "Hello, and welcome to the News at When. When? The 1990s, when the people of Southeastern Europe decided that they couldn't live with each other anymore and started to go their separate ways. Here to explain is Bob Hale, with the Yugoslavia Report." ... "So Lord Carrington comes up with this new plan called, well, the Carrington Plan, which will make all six republics independent. However, the Serbian President, Slobodan Milošević, doesn't want to dissolve Yugoslavia, so he refuses to sign. Guess he 'Slobodan' that idea!" ... "So by now, all that's left of Yugoslavia is the republics of Serbia and Montenegro, and that is the end of that. BUT NOT FOR LONG! Because in 2003 the country decides to change its name to, er, Serbia and Montenegro, and that is the end of that. BUT NOT FOR LONG! Because in 2006, Montenegro finally catches up with everyone else and decides that it now wants independence after all, so Serbia and Montenegro divides into... well, Serbia and Montenegro. And that really is the end of that. BUT NOT FOR LONG! Because just two years later, Kosovo declares independence from Serbia, only this time Serbia isn't quite so keen on losing yet more territory and refuses to recognise it, and that really, really is the end of that. OR IS IT? After all, this is the Balkans, where everyone hates each other, so who knows what will happen next? Back to you, Sam."

Northern Germany (Or as I like to call it Schleswig-Holstein) was once Scandinavian lands, (owned by Denmark and populated by Danes, Jutes, Saxons, Angles) however over the last few centuries many Germans (1864 and before) moved to southern Denmark.) After awhile there became a German identity and spark the First and Second Schlewig War(German Vic). That land was the ancient home of Angles and Saxons. Modern day Saxony was a result of a 13th Century migration southward by the Saxons.

I think that Britain would be at a disadvantage on land due to the distance. I am not sure how the Canadian citizens would have felt about it so I don't know how public sentement would have factored into that. With regards to the navy, Britain has had a first class navy since Elizabeth I, but we must also factor in the size and industrial power of the U.S. A full scale war would have ended the Depresion and U.S. dockyards would have started putting out ships in the hundreds, look at WW II.
