Aye, there were a bunch of incidents in which people who weren't cardinals became pope. My immediate thought goes to that one random ass monk that wrote a mean letter to the cardinals because they were taking too long (Multiple years) to elect a pope and so they elected him pope. Had no fucking idea what he was doing because the pope was legitimately the head of state and had to do king-things (which is why Borgia wanted it) and so he quit shortly after.

Yeah, Jofre/Gioffre/Goffredo was kinda the black sheep(or in this case "white" sheep) of the Borgia family. He also has a poor relationship with his wife Sancia because she slept around with Juan/Giovanni and possibly even Cesare(and in the BBC adaptation from the 80's Rodrigo too!). Luckily in the end, after Juan, Rodrigo, Sancia, and Cesare die, he marries another woman named Maria de Mila and it was a much happier relationship and they even have at least four children!
