Did I click on this video purely because I’m from Hertfordshire? Yes, yes I did

crazy how time does that past: look fat and pale to show how you never go outside and how rich you are now: look tan and fit to show how you often go outside and how rich you are

It's like that Victoria Wood sketch that was a send up of Cranford and girls got sprayed with white make up to look pale. They also went on a roller coaster and had their portrait quickly painted while on it.

I have both of those women beat. My skin is so pale it almost glows in the dark. And as for tanning, ha! Only horrible sunburns for me baby. Thank you a millionx1 for uploading these!

I have naturally pale skin too and it’s awful. People always think I’m ill or about to faint!

I can't answer the question but I am always impressed with the care HH always took to be as accurate as possible in the props and makeup department.

That's also where the term "blueblood" comes from, since commoners tended to work outside all day and get tans, the upper-classes stayed inside and kept their pale skin with their veins clearly visible.

Women here in the US used everything from lemon juice to buttermilk to bleach their skin. I've done this myself. My great-grandmother said that in some cases of stubborn freckles, even a poultice of cow manure was applied. Sears and other catalog houses also sold bleaching creams.

I've heard of using vinegar as an astringent, but never drinking it for your skin.

Some people do it for their joints, it's about the same level of effective.

Well we risk cancer to make our skin darker, whilst knowing it causes cancer. We aren't too different.

Remember when the early 2010’s was the ‘random’ era?

This is what I'm talking about. In Victorian times the kids never would have called me Skunky for my black hair and very pale skin.

HH may laugh, but Victorians had the right idea- getting sunburned is really dangerous for the skin, especially in our time, thanks to pollution.
