I'm on a pipe welding kick. Today we're welding a 8" horizontal weld and some call this a horrible zontal weld. Nevertheless, sometimes they are necessary and important to know how to do. So let's cut this pipe, fit it up, and weld it.

Austin. I have done quite a few heavy wall large diameter pipe in the horizontal position with cels. Like you said they aint pretty but after awhile we adapt as all welders do. I found on the capping runs the best method was longer arc than normal, the juice up a little more than you would expect and a fast whipping back and forth action. as always the first capping run is critical, to keep it straight I run the grinder around as a tram line so its easier to see. the long arc and fast whipping action reduces the undercut on the top final pass. Just my experience, thought I would share

I remember doing 2G in school. I hated every second of it, and still don't like it! 5G was where it's at. It was winter by that time, dark outside since our class was at night, we'd break for supper about 7 and when it came time for welding to continue, I'd dose off mid weld. Several times each night. It was nice and dark, I was warm leaning against the pipe, and the different voices in my head each took turns talking while my body just drug the rods uphill. I legit don't remember welding several of the beads I did or how they even stayed in the bevel. I hated to wake up, but it wasn't for long... Now I haven't done pipe at work in over a year, but I miss those days. Merry Christmas Austin. See you in 2023!

I appreciate the comments about pretty vs clean. Been welding a few 10lb rolls of mig building 16ga fence and just want to make sure its strong, have to build it fast and dirty so welds dont usually look good, but making them look consistent, thinking you can try again just to get a little bit better at controlling it. Basically im glad im getting paid for hood time

Great video Austin ....This isn't related to this video but more to the videos on miter's and saddles...I have always used a old bandsaw blade instead of a wrap a round to lay out the cut lines...Also a piece of angle iron 18 to 24 inches works wonderfully to lay out your ordinate lines 4's, 8's, 16's....This old Pipefitter enjoys your content very much !!!

Merry Christmas Mr. Ross, you pipeline fellas are something else. 2G I have always 7018 filler and hot passed on a 5P+ ròot . Then on 8 "an cap it would be a 3 stringer. My weld codes require that. Amazing I wish I could do this .God bless happy holidays . P.S . I like that 8010 it runs better than 60. Just tried it for the first time this morning.

lol, it’s been so long since I’ve done a horizontal pipe I bet mine would look like poo! It takes a special touch for sure. I welded high pressure systems years ago and loved it. Every finished system was hydrostaticly ? testes to 50,000 PSI. Naturally, the most minute flaw, pin hole etc would show. These systems were on special pump systems like on oil and gas well lining materials

In the old days we use to lace cap those horizontal welds. Even threadolets weldolets and such. You could use the quickie clamp to rest on while you went around the pipe.

What is a lace cap ?
@glenngosline1710
@glenngosline1710 2 жыл бұрын
@@srjr2531 A lace cap is like a weave in the horizontal position. Fill the weld flush to a little over flush. Than you start right at the top and drag down. Than a quick long arc back to the top not to deposit any metal than down again. Running your puddle on a slight slant. Some guys use to do a figure eight as well. Best way is to see it done to understand it.

Not used anymore. Welding engineers say it has a bad affect on the heat affected zone. Still a lot of welds around with it. Still going strong.

Was watching another video on a pipeline test day in W. Virginia. Have you considered the “A” welder list at UA Local 344 or 430 (Tulsa OK). It’s an option without the cross state 798 travel. Most carbon jobs require a 6G 2” Sch. 80 6010 root (uphill), 7018 cap/fill. There’s some GTAW jobs on stainless as well while most shop pre fab is GMAW flux or metal core 1G rollout. Also, each state has a local with a short line agreement that dispatches rig welders. That might be a lot less headaches. 👍🏻

Man I think a 2G weld in any process/material is like the hallmark of being able to see a welder’s capability in all aspects. In my dumbass opinion, 2G welds are deceivingly difficult. I think they’re the hardest weld to make look really nice. I’m a fan of hot fast narrow multi pass stringers for the cover/cap.

If I was to execute this particular type of weld, then I would want to use Mig in a shop setting. So that I wouldn't have to worry about the wind messing up my welds by blowing away the shielding gas. I'd make sure that the shop fan was off too.

He just showed every weld bead he made, so that should satisfy the need for bead. Lol but for real, if he did it every video of how too, you wouldn't watch. He's basically the same as a welding school online. You just have to practice everything you see and then it gets to be habit. Welding school basically gives you the habit that will form muscle memory. Every certified welder has it. More rod you burn, the more you learn. More you learn, the more $ you make.
