This reminds me of the time my sister graduated from University. Everyone was expecting to go in, get their diploma, and have a great time, but partway through the ceremony the dean killed the mood by saying (and yes, I recorded it), "I wanted to give an uplifting speech and tell a few jokes, but I think it's far more important to take this time to remember that we stole this land off the Natives. We killed them for it, destroyed their tribes, their traditions, their culture, and today we're using their land to ensure everyone has a better future except them. As you accept your diploma, just remember whose backs you're standing on." Funnily enough, the University wasn't built on Native land (it was untouched), and my sister's best friend, who's half Cree, looked at me after his little speech and just said, "Jesus Christ, what a c*nt."

“This is a pretty good cheese burger, Wendy’s. But I’d be remiss to ignore all the reasons not to be excited for the Wendy’s double bacon cheeseburger. There is a pandemic killing people, China’s building concentration camps, thousands of people die from cancer every day, and poverty, starvation, and disease run rampant in developing nations. As I’m writing this, it looks very likely that there will be a new president or something in America. But it’s clear none of that bad stuff will go away just because a new old white man is sitting behind the resolute desk. The world is fundamentally broken in a way that necessitates radical purple alien snap rather than incremental electorialism. The harsh truth is that, for the reasons listed above and more, a lot of people simply won’t even be able to buy the Wendy’s double bacon cheeseburger, regardless of supply. Or if they can, concerns over increasing big smart intellectual vocab word in the United States and the growing threat of political violence supersede any enthusiasm about the burger’s gooey cheese or how the crunchy bacon makes the burger more delicious. That’s not to say you can’t be excited for those things-I certainly am, on some level-but there’s an irrefutable level of privilege attached to the ability to simply do a leisure activity without actively giving yourself a brain aneurism over American politics that are irrelevant to said leisure activity.”

Oldschool gaming journalism was awesome. There used to be no Steam with it's super easy refund system, no massive rating agregators like Metacritic, no such things as letsplays. The only way to purchase a game was to go to your local store and buy a non-refundable hardcopy (I mean you probably could refund somewhere, but it really depended on the rules and good will of your local store), so you actually wanted to know if the game was worth begging money from your parents to buy it. And the best source of that information were game journalists. And they used to actually care, being a shill was not normal back then, it was massively shunned upon. And they would actually take their time to play the game and try their best to understand it and write a well thought out review. There was no need to rush with review, people wouldn't necessary want to run in the store immediately after the release, they were waiting for some objective information first. But that's the old times I'm talking about, those time are in the past and gaming journalism should have stayed there as well. To see what it has degenerated into today, I mean it's just disgraceful.
@olivercharles2930 Жыл бұрын
@@PlgDctr That sounds pretty awful tbh. Kotaku might be kinda trash, but there is nothing better than metacritic, lets plays and stuff like that. Getting information and opinions on a game is much easier than ever and you got a gigantic pool of it as opposed to one journalist in a tacky magazine.

Discussing politics in a video game makes sense as it’s a piece of art and a form of expression. For example: The Metal Gear franchise is extremely political because its entire _story_ is about world politics. Kojima uses his games as an outlet to express his political views and that is always worth discussing. The PlayStation 5 is a computer. Why is this guy talking about Biden in a review of a computer? This isn’t just a case of “game journalism bad blah blah blah etc etc” this is straight up unprofessional and they should be ashamed to even call themselves a journalist.

I'll say it again: when people say they don't want "politics in gaming", they don't mean the exploration of political, ethical and philosophical ideas. They mean preachy and shallow references to current-world politics.

While at first i was enjoying hopping from platform to platform its kinda hard to understand a game like this, you see, when i was growing up my dad wasn't really there for me. He was there, but he wasnt really "THERE" you know? Sometimes we'd talk but he always felt different. After getting older we only slipped further apart and ultimately i realized I spent so much time worrying about if my father loved me that i never gave enough attention to my mother and she and I drifted apart as well. In the early 2000s i played a game called halo 2. Some of you may of heard of it. It was a masterpiece game. Helped me kind of, get away from it all. In halo 2 theres a line where the main character says "giving the covenant back their bomb" this may have seemed cool at the time but bombings are a very real issue in the world. This gave me a different outlook on games as a whole. You see, in the 1997 film flubber, the now sadly deceased Robin Williams played a bit of a mad scientist, this reminded me of my father who was also mad but in a different way. A more..physical way. regardless knack 2 may just have a little something for everyone. 6/10 -Kotaku

I feel as though majority of these "games review journalists" actually wanted to write for politics in major news publications, but got stuck in gaming. So then what's the best thing to do? Of course still write about games, but inject political or social issues where they think they can. "Hey I know the PS5 is cool and all, but people can't afford it because the pandemic and the government needs to be completely reworked from the ground up" This is why I only read or watch reviews from people who actually care about games. Like my most trusted source, Moist Meter.

Yeah. Game journalism might as well be dead. I like the reviewers from KZbin a lot better. It feels less corporate to listen to a guy in his house give you his genuine, honest review of things.

The reason for their bitterness to these hobbies they cover is because Most of these journalists actually want to work for places like New york times, Washington post or CNN. But those jobs are taken by older vets, diversity hires, or just overall in demand So what's left for these white liberal journalist who wanted to make use if their journalism majors? internet website dedicated to a hobbies. Most college students played games in college or read comic books so thats where they gravitated to and build experience which is why they're is biased political agendas shoved it becauss they are basically building up their portfolio's to work for those big news agencies and have the "correct" politics on the "right side of history" to get noticed by the big news companies.
