For me it seems the Hope passed by something massive which caused it to bump out of skip. Since the path was predetermined cleared of mass gravity shadows then something under its own momentum crossed paths with the Hope. (This is my guess as to what happened to Earth). Unknown X factor detects the Hope flying off into random direction then traces the path back to Earth.

Incidentally... if you look carefully as you enter The Hope's interior... on the left side near the beginning area, one can find a jammed, sparking, slightly ajar door that, if one crouches closely, one can observe a leaning human skeleton just within the aperture! Kinda creepy... but perhaps one of the last few survivors (the Engineer?) we never get to see...

What ever caused the communication problem with earth is the most likely culprit in the drive failing. Also remember the UDL ship that they lost contact with also disappeared around the same time. Maybe something destroyed the earth's system or is blocking transport between both systems. That's my best guess.

Its interesting because the description of how the Skip drive works given in the loading screens basically matches how Zefram Cochrane described Star Trek's warp drive working in an old, utterly decanonized novel but the description of a skip jump taking a lot of fuel but remaining at FTL taking mach less fits how the Star Wars hyperdrive was described in one of the Legends X-Wing novels.

@@Mate397 How do you know that the Hope can actually start the cryo process? Cryo off site and pod store? It's an intergalactic ice cream truck..
@ChuckPalomo5 жыл бұрын
That's exactly what i was gonna say. In one of the logs the captain even threatens to freeze anyone committing cannibalism to be tried in a court of law once the reach Halcyon, meaning freezing people mid-voyage was totally possible. Why not just freeze everyone then? problem solved. Makes absolutely no sense.
@nadrewod9995 жыл бұрын
The problem is that, by freezing all of the crew members, the ship would be entirely reliant on whoever reached the vessel first to UNfreeze them, and they would have no way of finishing the navigational calculations if they froze themselves early. Add the fact that the cannibals would have had a much larger diet of fats and protein than the slowly-starving captain, and the captain may have simply not had the manpower to stop all of the mutinous cannibals (hence why the captain had to lock the bridge and the cryo bays, as well as why the navigator was alone after the captain left).
@ChuckPalomo5 жыл бұрын
@@nadrewod999 What are you getting at? that's no worse than dying from starvation. Besides, they could've just frozen all non-essential personnel, finished the calculations, then frozen whoever was left. You're assuming that the cannibals would've stopped the captain from freezing everyone, but that's circular reasoning; there would've been no cannibals if everyone went into cryosleep before they got desperate enough to start eating people. There is no scenario where going into cryosleep is not the best all round solution.

It would be cool if a sequel would have us meet our character from the first game in some capacity. Either make a single canon look for the "Stranger", or load their appearance from the first game's save file to carry over to the sequel. Even if just to see them, the plot doesn't have to revolve around them. Dragon Ball Xenoverse did that the main custom character appearing in the sequel.

Rick, thank you so much for this vid. Hearing you put the fate of The Hope into one cohesive story with your great voice was wonderful. I found the fate of the ship to be a really moving experience as I uncovered the terminals and made my way around but I've never been very good at connecting with video game RPG story lines. Something about the fractured nature broken up by gameplay elements always frustrates me so I end up enjoying the story but not nearly as much as if I'd just read it in a book or seen it in a movie. Your narrative just now really brought it all together for me. I really do hope you come back to this story later as I'd love to hear your take on it all.

You can tell this part of the game wasn't given much thought. Why didn't the crew just go into cryostasis to avoid starvation? why did the skip drive work for the player when it was supposed to have been completely busted (the very reason the Hope got lost in the first place)? why did the UDL commander in charge of the place say the Hope wasn't worth guarding, and that he didn't think anyone would be stupid enough to actually go there, when in fact Phineas Welles, the most wanted fugitive in the system, broke into the place just a few short weeks ago? plus, the location and existence of the Hope was supposed to be a sate secret, yet he acts like it's public knowledge and the most mundane thing in the world. The writing was all over the place.
@toddpeucker99055 жыл бұрын
ChuckPalomo Remember the part about the board not investing in preparation or things concerning precautions for the unseen? The crew had no cryo-pods set aside for them since the trip was only supposed to be ten years. I'm guessing once a cryo-pod is opened, it can't be repurposed for slumber. There is probably assigned protocols and matching biometric authentication IDs and so on. Also Welled wasn't an outlaw by the time he happened upon the hope. It wasn't until his unsanctioned experiments for years made him wanted by UDL The only real mystery for me is how you the player was revived and didn't go on to have cellular breakdown. .
@ChuckPalomo5 жыл бұрын
@@toddpeucker9905 That explanation falls apart when you read a log by the captain who threatens anybody collaborating with the cannibal engineer to be put in hibernation so they can be court martialed once they reach Halcyon. So they absolutely had usable cryo-pods. And don't you go saying that he was bluffing or something, cause that would be a blatant ass pull. Plus there's the other stuff I listed. Sometimes you have to stop looking for logical explanations where none exist and just accept the fact that stories are written by humans, and no story is ever gonna be 100% airtight. It's not the player's job to fix plot holes.
@toddpeucker99055 жыл бұрын
ChuckPalomo I don't remember such a log..but I do remember a similar one talking about abettors being put in the brig. I also don't know what you mean by "other stuff I listed". The Story is pretty straight forward.
@ChuckPalomo5 жыл бұрын
@@toddpeucker9905 The other stuff being my question about the busted skip drive and the weird attitude of the UDL commander, I think his name was Quincy or something like that. You say Phineas wasn't a wanted fugitive at the time they found the Hope, but I'm referring to when he broke into the ship to steal you pod, which happened at the beginning of the game, by which time was was already public enemy number 1.
@toddpeucker99055 жыл бұрын
ChuckPalomo it's understood he had been discovered to have been doing experiments for some time by the time he takes out your pod. I'm not sure what skip drive issue you're referring to. the Hope made it to Halcyon decades late under regular engine power, not by FTL. HHC put in orbit near Typhon after it arrived and stated it was lost because they couldn't feed the existing people much less another several hundred thousand. The commander probably felt it was a waste to guard it because he knew the board had basically abandoned it as a low priority and that all the board soldiers knew this, hence his "common knowledge" attitude. Not to the everyday man but to anyone working for HHC. The beginning is fast so the events move quickly off screen. Welles knows he's being tracked so he pulls your pod and while your waking up and answering questions (essentially creating your character stats) he is travelling back to his lab near terra 2. The board starts to close in and he drops you into terra 2 orbit towards Hawthorne's ship. While he goes FTL in his ship most likely to his modified asteroid lab. I know some may think it appears he skips the Hope, but no, it remains in orbit where HHC parked it years earlier. Remember the only thing that was keeping it from FTL after the malfunction of the slow down or "brakes being engaged" as the logs say, is that they didn't have enough power to initiate a second skip. You solve this at the end of the game by having the much more advanced Reliable connect with its systems and route auxiliary power enough to make the short skip to Welles' lab....anything else you need Chuck?

I think the crew didn't go into cryo not just because there wasn't enough room for everyone, but also because by the time things were too far gone and they weren't thinking straight, the cannibals accused the captain and the non-cannibals that they just wanted all the colonists to themselves and would end up being eaten themselves (since maybe someone has to activate crying from outside.) That would still give them more rations. However, rations don't last forever. Still, Groundbreaker or at least other ships could've checked up on the colonists later, if even Alex Hawthorne's ship can fly to The Hope.

I only see a score or so of open pods in bay 12. I would assume that Welles having in his *first* entry recorded 12 failures and 'on to number 13', and additional entries up to and beyond the board 'catching him' as a murderer and monster - that the vast majority of the missing ~3200 colonists failed to revitalise in his experiments on the Hope and later in his off site lab. Perhaps even most of the spilled gloop comes from Welles failed early attempts on the Hope at the start, rather than from the cannibals alone. Did the board not attempt to revive a few of the colonists (where Welles first was involved), and abandoned it as impossible... while Welles refused to give up, 'in the spirit of scientific advancement'. Some small number of the 3200 may even be 'officially' defrosted by the board.
@mattstorm3604 жыл бұрын
Considering their situation, they didn't have a plan for new colonists or a way to house them and feed them. It's easier to just let them sleep till something comes up but I'm willing to bet someone tried to wake a couple people up only to find them explode into goo. Makes the decision a hell lot easier, they can't wake them up. That just leaves their decision to not investigate a way to save them resulting in Welles having to do it in secret and without any real knowledge of what exactly explosive cell death is resulted in the deaths of several subjects, but, they were all dead anyway... I don't see him being able to experiment with thousands of people, or needing too. Even then, I doubt the board wouldn't notice a thousand people missing after the hope arrives. They noticed after 12. The crew are more likely the result of the majority of pods. Most for eating the rest in a desperate struggle to find someone who won't explode.
