I was nearly killed in a car accident in high school, 37 years ago today. My friend was goofing off and lost control, slammed us head-on into a palm tree. He still had his paper license from the DMV, he was such a new driver. I was the worst out of four of us, spent the last month of my senior year in the hospital, missing graduation and saying goodbye to school friends I'd known for years (different time today, with social media). Another friend who was in the accident was in an ambulance his mom drove past, unaware he was in it. We were only a few hundred yards from our destination, in a residential neighborhood, where the speed limit was 25 MPH. Losing control, my friend slammed the gas instead of the brake, getting us up to about 40 before that tree jumped out in front and stopped us. One friend slammed into the windshield from the back seat, only his foot under the front seat kept him from head-butting that tree. Broke all the bones in said foot, and still has glass that works its way out of his forehead to this day. The driver broke both arms from the steering wheel, which was imprinted on his chest. Had to have his broken jaw wired and teeth replanted. The guy behind me had only a concussion. I actually don't remember the accident or two days after, since I was also concussed. My wallet was found in the tree, and I've been told I was freaking out, running into someone's house. I broke my thumb, but also ruptured my intestines from the seat belt, which was only a lap belt in that car. Friends said that after the driver picked us up earlier, it was my suggestion to put on our seat belts, as they weren't in common usage at the time (mom's arm across the chest was the norm). The guy who hit the windshield from the back was the only one unbuckled. Had the two of us in the front not been, we probably wouldn't have survived.

Every day, about 37 people in the United States die in drunk-driving crashes - that's one person every 39 minutes. In 2022, 13,524 people died in alcohol-impaired driving traffic deaths. These deaths were all preventable.Unadjusted national crime statistics from 2016 indicate that among all individuals arrested for a DUI, 82% were White, 23% were Latino, 14% were Black, and 2% were American Indian.
