(I'm used to people finding it too much to handle when they get to know me) but I was kinda happy when he expressed concern that they were going to use mental illness as horror on its own. DDLC seems like it's the kind of game where the horror really depends on how much the player connects to the characters, but that can be pretty difficult to pull off if the writing's not up to it. For me, at least, the writing's decent enough to get me invested enough to get legitimately creeped out by some of the more subtle scares in the game. I can definitely see how it's really not creepy for some people, though.

+Being meguca is suffering DDLC's horror being impactful also depends on whether or not the player is easily affected by the horror tropes that the game uses. For instance I'm not afraid of the game's horror because to me it feels very similar to the tons of gaming creepypastas I've read and doesn't really deviate from the usual gaming creepypasta setup. I enjoyed the slice of life bits more because the horror side of the story didn't faze me much.

I think that this games greatest flaw is also it's greatest strength. The amount of time it takes to get into the "meat" of the game. It creates a great smoke screen, but it probably bothers a lot of people. Regardless it's super impressive how Dan managed to code this in a visual novel making tool. Overall a very well done and worthwhile experience.
@theguyyouhate7 жыл бұрын
yeah the firest part is just as relevant as the "point" of it all at the end for the main audience for this kind of visual novel. it's not just a smoke screen. it's partly to properly introduce the charecters and make you care. it also serves to be a truely unpleseant contrast to what the game becomes. when you keep going from the normal and the freaky stuff the freaky stuff seems worse.
@nicolaskarrer44797 жыл бұрын
@theguyyouhate I agree with you regarding how important the first 3 hours are, where you get to know each character. If you would start right off with the "psychological" element, it wouldn't have had that much of an impact. For example sayori: you basically get to know her as a quirky, innocent and happy-go-lucky girl who's always cheerful and wants to make other people happy. Getting to the part where she confesses how she really feels kinda made me sad - which wouldn't have been possible if you already knew from the start that she suffered from depression and was like a downer. Character development was really great IMO.
@hahaha78864 жыл бұрын
Nicolas Karrer exactly. A lot of people here are just for the horror element but that has no effect if you dont have an attachment to the characters first.

I think that the reason I like this so much is because of Monika's character. Like this type of horror isn't necessarily new but like, the idea behind Monika's character and motives really got me. Spoilers below the cut!: Like the thought that she became aware that none of her world is real, and there is nothing for her there not only in terms of "every thing is scripted to happen and nothing new could happen" but also that she's a SIDE CHARACTER. She gets nothing, there is not ending for her, so she made one, she doesn't even have an outfit outside of her school uniform! Like i have a hard enough time knowing that I really don't mean anything in the long run, but I can atleast be comforted by the fact the nobody else does either. But imagine if you just, realized how unimportant YOU are and yet all the people around you have a bright and dazzling future and mean EVERYTHING. It's also worth mentioning that there are random events in the game, which can have anywhere from a 1/5 to a 1/100 chance of happening, and 11 "special poems" 3 of which are decided at random at the beginning of a playthrough that will be shown to you so you're not going to see all the same stuff every time.

Spoilers Below: While I do believe that ImScared did this idea in a quicker manner, I believe the reason this game has gotten more acclaim is because of the focus on the cutesy exterior. With ImScared, it's obvious the game's going to try to mess with you, and introduce the "interactive files" thing to you in-game. This game however, if you're going into it blind, there's very few ways to figure out how the game's going to turn out. The time they spend building up to the "scary parts" is really more of a way of getting the player to feel a false sense of security. The beginning of the game warns you that there's going to be disturbing material, but not many people expected it to be on this level. I was expecting it to try and preach about disturbing topics, not flat out use them to unsettle you, which really surprised me after the LITERAL 3 HOURS OF BUILD-UP. I can see why the game's gotten a following however, and I can definitely appreciate the work that went into it.

I think why I became so attached to this game is that the way it does the metahorror isn't just at the surface level. Finishing the game or doing certain things with the files show plenty of different things that are also going on amongst what we're already seeing. Plus, as a person who has been suffering with clinical depression for almost a year now, the way they portrayed it was very relatable for me. I've always had the feeling of ending my own life and not wanting to disappoint anyone, but it's a feeling that I can't entirely pinpoint where it's deriving from. Seeing Sayori suffer the same fate kind of hit me, because the way that she talked about how things still didn't get better even when you chose to be with her are common feelings that I get when anything good happens to me. Her character is meant to portray a person using false happiness as a mask to hide the eventual ending of their own life. It was a nice change of pace to see a game really grab me with the demise of the game, because that's such a scary thought people like myself sometimes have. When you restart the game and they essentially act like Sayori never existed, that's a fear that some with depression have because they feel as though they'll just be forgotten right away when they take their own lives. As you said before, I'mScared did the metahorror aspect a lot better. I completely agree, and it's still easily my favorite horror game to this day. But one thing they both have in common is giving off the illusion of choice, I'mScared giving you the choices but neither of them had technical good endings. DDLC gave that illusion by making you pick which girl you wanted to spend your time with, but it didn't matter in either arc of the game because the same outcome was set in stone. I know it's not unique in the metahorror genre, but I do think it deserves a lot of the praise it gets because of how well it's able to capture some of the emotions in certain parts.
@maxpaynegk6 жыл бұрын
I share the same sentiments about this game. Hearing Sayori's confession stuck a hard cord with me as I'm dealing with the same condition, and everything she said is exactly how I feel. That is where my attachment with this game formed.
@Dornogol6 жыл бұрын
Both of you did not suffer from this, like having depressing thoughts afterwards? My GF just has a low phase and luckily I played the game before her and could tell her to not play anymore. After explaining what happens later (depression and the suicide) she thanked me. That experiencing this herself while invested in the game could have had a pretty negative impact on her and as such it was better she did not play it herself.
@Shadowthefireknight26 жыл бұрын
I think if anything, the game really got me thinking about how important it is to be an impact to those around you, whether it's listening to someone vent or actually finding a physical way to comfort them. Sometimes, we don't realize who's going through mental struggles and this game helps suggest that we should be more willing to check on people and be there for them.
@RC-jr3np5 жыл бұрын
I genuinely felt bad for Sayori when she was talking about her depression. I feel like this game has a lot of plot twists and the actual 'horror' experience is dependent on how the player feels towards the characters, but you gotta admit that it was heartbreaking to hear Sayori try to explain how she feels, regardless if you aren't into the game that much. As a lot of people have suffered through depression, it becomes a little too real and 'scary' how your thoughts of suicide could replicate someone else's. I suffer from bipolar disorder type 2, and watching the gameplay was a little triggering as I saw others who commented about feeling the same thing. I really wanted to watch a gamely of Doki Doki but I saw the warning signs and I hesitated. Although, what helped me get through this video was (real) John's response to these certain scenes, he really knows what to say at the moment and overall his response just made me laugh. I thought I would be nervous for some reason, but thanks to John I found myself laughing more times than I thought I could.

The one issue I have with Doki Doki Literature Club! is that while, yes, it has to trick you for the first three hours and what comes after is great, there are *_two problems_* it has there. a) Two hours would've been enough to set up the trap. b) It tries to be *_too_* generic. Meaning, it would've been more interesting *_and also more deceiving_* to set up an interesting plot in these two hours, and then corrupt *_from there._* I think if a) and b) were sorted out, that would've skyrocketed John's perception of it. (Don't misunderstand: I really like DDLC. But the opening hours sour it a looot.)
@voxenbox38117 жыл бұрын
Totally agree on all of this. Especially it being too generic. The game is made to be replayed in multiple forms but the story line it uses as a trap isn't engaging enough to really pull that off. I also think there's a third issue that exacerbates the drag of the set up length: C) You're given warnings all over before the actual start of the game. Like, you gotta agree to a (short) ToS and everything. Content warnings are great, don't get me wrong, but when there's even a warning I have to hit "I agree" to..... it kind of sets up some fairly high expectations imo. Ones that makes three whole hours of a sparkly generic otome a much bigger chore than they might've been otherwise.
@AniGaAG7 жыл бұрын
Edited in the main comment, and saying it again here, just to clarify this: I really like DDLC. I really do. It's just that the opening hours should've mimicked *_good_* dating sims, not bland ones, and that just sours the experience quite a bit and keeps it from greatness.
@JohnWolfe7 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I agree, specifically the second point. I think they tried to make the two extremes a little too... polar opposite. The three days of reading poetry to each other was kind of mind-numbing. I get that the point was to get us as invested as possible in the characters so that when they started acting differently it would have a greater impact but I think they overdid it.
@AniGaAG7 жыл бұрын
Yep, pretty much that. Like I said, it should've just mimicked *_good_* dating sims. Like - how about we legitimately go into getting to know [girl the player picked], knowing more about her, seeing what her issues are, with the game really directly hinting at the story going towards solving them and building a romantic happy end *_as if it really was a dating sim,_* just exactly like a normal dating sim would progress - *_AND THEN_* everything goes to shit, putting all that to a screeching halt, when just earlier the reader still thought this would legitimately progress into a story and resolution around the girl they picked! That would've been so damn effective and brutal, right? Which, as a side note, would not only be brutally effective, but make rereading DDLC to try other girls' routes or just scavenge for the foreshadowing you missed the first time around all the more enormously satisfying and fun compared to the mild satisfaction one can get out of it as is.
@kcmcclary5694 жыл бұрын
@@JohnWolfe instead of the 3 days of Poetry I think that it would've been better to have players actually do activities with each of the girls outside of school perhaps take them out someplace and getting to hang out with them for a bit. In my opinion one on one time with each girl would've given a better insight on who they really were and possibly even given us tiny bread crumbs to follow.

I find it interesting how Monika never really targeted Natsuki. Getting rid of Sayori first made the most sense because naturally the long-standing friendship she had with the protagonist would be the biggest hindrance. Not sure why she went after Yuri next but mostly ignored Natsuki. Actually, now that I think about it, having Natsuki see Yuri's 3-day-old corpse as her last memory was downright sadistic. In any case, thanks for playing this, John. Your voices, reactions and snarky comments made these past 5 hours worth it.

First of all, I absolutely loved some of John's reactions to things in this game. And I'm not talking about horror stuff, I'm thinking of the weirder stuff (like when the protagonist accidentally cuts their finger) because it's absolutely hilarious, especially since I pretty much think the same things as John. Secondly, while I have only seen playthroughs of this game(I'm pretty sure my laptop would break down if I tried to play this myself), I do enjoy it to some extent. I agree that the build-up to the messed up stuff is a bit too dragged out, and it's not like those parts are even filled with that much interesting content. I'd be more okay with that if that part of the story was a bit more compelling, and I've noticed when watching multiple playthroughs that it's really boring to sit through the conversations in the beginning over and over again, and the only thing that I actually care about is the reactions from the player during some more meta stuff, and I also pay some attention to things that are foreshadowing to what will happen. Once stuff start to pick up, it's definitely more interesting. Third, for a free game, I definitely like it. It being free is of course not a reason not to put effort into it, but it helps you accept the more tedious or boring parts of the game (cough the first three hours cough). If this had cost money, it would probably add to the irritation over the length of the game. As it is now, the game is more than acceptable for a free game. I've seen people play worse games that actually cost money. And I do really enjoy the game after things pick up, it's really neat. I don't know if I would call it horror, but definitely more thriller-like and filled with suspense. Also I'm a literature nerd so this game really makes me want to write more poetry and read more poetry and analyze more poetry.

Um... aside from having depression and anxiety being a reason to not watch this, I'd also really, really give the recommendation to not watch it or play it if you have issues with reality. Usually other forth wall breaking games haven't gotten to me in the past, but this one specifically did. Take that how you will, I suppose.
@karmenfreeman57857 жыл бұрын
I agree. I played this knowing it was a meta horror and all that, and didn't think much of it because I've played meta horrors in the past that never bothered me, despite having personal problems with reality. But this one messed with me to the point I genuinely regretted playing it. It might be the fact that the characters look more "real" compared to the pixelation and style of I'm Scared, The Fourth Wall, and many others labelled under meta-fiction. Either way, I wouldn't recommend suffers of reality distortion or even paranoia to play this game.

Idk if anyone else could tell from the beginning or whatever, but you can really tell the true meaning behind the raccoon poem. At least my interpretation of it, its about self harm and giving into the darkness and urges. Even though you know once you feed the darkness it will always come back for more, you do it anyway hoping to make it happy and go away. And it works. So you keep giving in to make it happy, to make it go away if even for a little. And cutting bread isn’t really cutting bread. It’s honestly a very good and symbolic poem.

Timestamps of the 'glitches' I rarely see in the game: 3:55:42 3:56:33 4:04:44 4:18:31 (Also you could get the good ending by saving before Sayori dies, and 'Collecting all the pictures - that are shown at the end' by writing a poem for a girl and going through that rout before Sayori dies again, and repeating this until you 'played' with every girl, and getting to the end as normal.)
