How people tend to enjoy these games is actually thinking of them seeing it in real life, that’s how the horror comes around, if you want to make jokes or just recognize it’s a game, unless it is masterfully weaved to instill fear and dread, people immerse themselves to feel the horror, a silhouette of a man right infront of you when you’re a kid would scared the hell out of you, but in a game, unless you can get your head into it like you are there, it isn’t really much. Yeah it is dumb, and taking a look at these games as games, they are all mostly the same and walking simulators. I think why people immerse themselves is pacing, in a shooter you see a body and laugh your ass off or not care, but with the pacing of the game, if not overdone, it is more stunning to see the body, along with living a normal life in the game around it, it all centers around immersing the player before scares. If the player is not immersed or does not care to be, nothing works. That’s what I’ve gathered at least, I mean it’d be an easier argument to make if they had vr for it, but it just boils down to the player to determine the effect

I actually like subtle things you can miss like the guy walking up stairs in episode 1. Obviously doesn’t make the rest of it good but that they didn’t zoom the camera in on it and play a horror sting there was nicely restrained compared to the rest of it. Stairs weren’t even that visible from the position.

The chatter brought up a good point. Charlie never experiences a horror game really. He often plays with lights on, has chat on and reads it and the entire time makes the game and experience goofy while pulling it through the dirt. He never immerses himself into the games which is why he never gets scared or jumps, but completely freaks out when seeing a cockroach, since he himself is Charlie and completely immersed.
