Just thought I’d try to answer the question, “why can’t horror games actually be scary,” and I think the reason is because horror games(or at least more modern shitbox horror games) can’t capture that sense of dread that you could get from before. I think it’s like the first time playing slender when it first came out and made that type of horror genre, and compare it those new firecracker fart games in the same type of horror genre.

Yes, the fear comes from feeling like you are about to fail a required objective. Not from simply reading a note or seeing a ghostly figure in a corner. The original experience of horror games was an edge of your seat, nerve wracking experience because you had the sense if you lost, you would fail everything. Most horror games do have acceptable assets and models, it's just that the way they are implemented and the lack of experience of them in real life thereof, most things are unable to provide a dreadful feeling while the player is sitting down, relaxed and in a familiar environment, playing on a 2d screen.

The problem with this type of horror is it's just a Halloween haunted house. It's like "oooo let's put a bunch of spooky stuff in, but no real story or stakes." Which unless you're a toddler; just comes off as boring and dumb.

Agreed. Jumpscares are shitty cheap tools to scare you, and the crawling and walking animations were so bad I couldn't take them seriously. This is just another mediocre horror game.

Maybe I'm easily entertained, but I prefer to read horror and have nightmares for my scares any day over playing a horror game/watching a horror movie. Someone clever using our imaginations against us is the scariest thing about the horror genre and that just doesn't translate well to the screen imo. I will concede that asian horror films are pretty damn scary but American horror is just jumpscare trash burying the sadly short list of Ari Aster's work

There’s a few good outliers with games, but most are from Asia like Silent Hill. A good game based on that franchise actually is Lost in Vivo. It wasn’t very scary to me but it build a fantastic atmosphere and had an interesting narrative that left a lot to the imagination
